Description
So if any team would take lucic at 50% retained salary and buy him out I believe the cap hit is :
Year 1 = 1.8m per team
Year 2&4 = 2.3m per team
Year 3 = 2.075m per team
Year 5-8 = 325k per team

So does anyone think any team would be willing to do this for Puljujärvi and compensation. If so let me know what teams you think would be int

@coreydox and @newmy have me convinced that this would be a good trade for Ottawa if you added Edmonton's 2022 second. It requires a careful analysis of the respective contracts.

I think, and I don’t know this for sure, the Oilers half of the cap hit would remain $3mil for the balance of the contract, the team that buys him out would be as you show here for the years he is supposed to be under contract, but the team that buys him out would pay the full $650k penalty for years 5-8 by themselves.

I don't think Puljujärvi, is enough compensation for any team take on Lucic 50% retained (buyout or not). Edmonton would have to add minimum one 1st, probably 2 (or some other combination of value similar) which is why a deal has not happened.

No the Oilers caphit would be reduced as well. See Spooners retention for NYR now 300kx2 instead of 900kx1

Or it probably hasn't happened yet until July 17th when the Oilers have to pay him 3 mil

Maybe Puljujärvi, Bear, 1st, and Lucic 50% retained for a 4th? Maybe something like that.

Zero chance it takes 2 firsts with 50% retention. Doubt it would even take 1 with 50% retention as 2nd team can just retain another 50% and sell Lucic to a team at 1.5M caphit if Reaves makes 2.8M there's a market for Lucic at 1.5M.

Oilers retains 3M, Team A receives 2nd round pick and X prospect, Team A retains 1.5M and trades him to team B for mid/late round pick.

Oilers get 3M cap savings
Team A gets 2nd round pick, mid/late round pick and B level prospect for retaining 1.5Mx4
Team B gets 1.5M 4th line enforcer that's usually top 5 in league in hits and should get about 20-25 points

I forgot the most important part of the trade I referred to above: Lucic, Puljujarvi and the 2022 second for Bobby Ryan. The cap hits are essentially the same for the first three years and then Ottawa has the roughly $7.25M cap hit in the fourth year in exchange for the draft pick; Edmonton is out from under in the fourth year; the actual money paid out is the same because Lucic gets $4M, $5M and $4M for the last three years of his contract.

That’s strange. And seems like a bit of a risk for the trading team if they aren’t in favour of having the problem stretched out multiple extra years.

Lucic
Puljujarvi
Russel
2nd
3rd

EDM retains nothing and dumps Russel and Lucic .
Lucic would be bought out by MTL after OTT retains half .

OTT gets 2nd , 3rd and Kulak

MTL gets Puljujarvi and Russel

EDM get Hudon (done more in less time then JP, **** if you will but he's got talent just been pushed out by the Finnish additions )
the main focus for EDM is the long term cap they just dumped

OTT can have the players if they want but the 2nd will give them four in 2020 and two 3rds in 2020 which they seem to covet stock piling . (we'll just as gladly take the picks )

All hinges on the NMC I think the Oilers would do that or something similar since might get 1 year of Bobby in top 6 then Benson could take that role and move Bobby to 3rd line

You cannot retain more than 50% of a players contract.

Now that's a deal that can work.

A single team can't retain more then half.. example Hagelin's contract last year

No, 50% is the maximum allowed retention on any single players contract. No more than two teams can retain salary on 1 player and for no more than 50%.

Seriously.. gave you an example and you just blindly deny.. So here we go

Hagelin's contract was for 4M AAV PIT retained 6.2% in a trade to LA for 250K retention
Hagelin was then later traded to WSH for 50% retention 3.75M retained by 50% is 1.875M.

While this isn't a large number over 50% it shows a contract can be reduced below 50%. As 1.875M from 4M is 53.125%

I don’t like the Ryan trade Ottawa is in rebuild and can take cap, whether whoever take lucic buys him out or flips him Edmonton can’t afford to take Ryan because they need to go out and get legitimate top 6 players to help mcdavid and draisaitl before they request trades
