Barrie at $7 million AAV is not so much the issue. The issue is, what will it take for Morgan Reilly to stay once his current deal is up. Yes, there are still term there, but it would first be Barrie, say at $7 million AAV, then does Reilly take the exact same deal? Hard to say. On the open market, I think Reilly's value would be at least $8.5 million AAV. With so many large contracts already signed and upcoming, something will have to give here. That give will likely be William Nylander and that's based more on numbers then anything else.

salary cap will have gone up by the time rielly is up for new deal. Plus you worry about that when the time comes he has 3 more years left its a win now window

it would surprise me if Barrie re-signed with TOR. nothing against them just think that Barrie (depending on his season) may be looking for a contract similar to EK65

I think they move Nylander next summer to be able to sign their defence. They finally got their RD, so don't see them letting him walk. However, I can see Muzzin going to UFA as Dermott should be ready for 2nd pair LD. Nylander can be moved for a RD at a lower cap hit. Bracco or some other Marlie players should be ready to make the jump after another year. Kappy can play with Matthews already, so after another year he is back there again.

I could see Barrie at $7.5m to $8.5m and Reilly at $8.5. Hard to say on Reilly though, he is the longest serving Leaf now and he may actually take a little less on an 8 year deal to help the team. I think he should be their next captain. Sandin and Lily should be ready for 2020, but likely your 3rd pair. Who ever you trade Nylander for, plays in the top 4 RD spot.

The cap should take a huge jump for 2021 when Reilly and Anderson are due new deals, which will help. New TV deal and Seattle revenues.

No, any good GM has to consider long-term when dealing with the short term and I am seriously concerned that Kyle Dubas has lost sight of that in the wake of the Toronto Raptors's Kawhi Leonard swing-for-the-fences short term deal. Also, you need to give consideration for Jake Muzzin, who I would argue is a top priority to resign, almost to the same extent as Tyson Barrie.

That Tyler Myers deal did not help things. That Anton Stralman deal really did not help things. I think a great comp for Barrie is Ryan Ellis' new contract.

No not necessarily. I think you (a) have to let the season play out and see the chemistry between Barrie and the Rielly/Muzzin (the lefties he will probably be playing with most), and the market. As I already mentioned, I think Ryan Ellis' new deal is a great comp for Barrie's next contract.

When sakic asked him what he wanted he said 8 and thats why he got traded. If karlsson locked in 11.5 barrie is asking for 8 for sure.

In the open market he for sure lands 8, he's one of the top offensive defensemen in the game and 28 years old. Someone easily accepts that contract
