It's just a negotiation tactic to get leverage. A lot of his agents clients hold out longer to get more money. Ferris probably sees that he's losing the leverage with the announcement of the cap possibly being lower and is doing whatever he can to get it back. Wouldn't put too much belief into it yet. Remember, he grew up a huge Leafs fan. If he leaves via offer sheet he'll be one of the most hated Leafs of all time. Can't see him wanting that

The Leafs need to sit and wait. No one will be offering $11M or more and no one will be providing an offer sheet.

If im Marner, im thinking ive outscored Matthews the past few seasons, my point totals are skyrocketing from year to year and im playing on the 1st line. I think im the best player on the team and i want Matthews money, its as simple as that. Kane signed to 10.5 mill many years ago and i think im gonna be on Kanes level pretty soon and eclipse 100pts this upcoming season, no way im settling for less than 10. And if im taking 10, i want to go straight to UFA the first opportunity it comes

Actually in ppg Matthews this past year was slightly below Marner while Marner was playing with Tavares and Matthews with combinations of Marleau, Kapanen, Johnsson and Ennis. Also many dont want to say that but goals > assists, center > winger. Matthews is also best 5v5 goal scorer in NHL since he came into the league.. and he missed significant time. There is difference between those two and its not 1mil difference. I would say 2mil difference given all the things. Marner at 10 should be maximum.

It depends what he values more. The other thing that doesn't get discussed is the Leafs are able to structure the contract different then other teams (similar to the way they did it for Tavares). It will be bonus-heavy, which will make it lockout protected and more difficult to buyout. Let's say he takes 6x10. 15 up front this year, min salary, then 10, 10, 10, 10, 5 signing bonuses. Not every team would be willing to do that and theoretically should give the Leafs an advantage.
