Karlssons good enough to play on the offside

Description
Karlsson can play the offside, playing with Weber will allow him to relax and focus on offense. It will be awkward at first and mistakes will happen but Karlsson is an elite defenseman and should have no problem adjusting to the left side something he has done in his career before at least a few shifts in some games while playing in Ottawa/San Jose and playing for Sweden.

Why it makes sense for Montreal: they don't have to give up asset's in a trade to get a top pairing defense, it gives the Habs someone who can actually skate with the puck up the ice from their own end. The move still allows the Habs to search for a left shot defense that could come available at the deadline if teams don't have the season they expect. Players that come to mind are Fowler(ANA), Ghost(PHI), Brodie(CAL), Nurse(EDM), Gustafsson(CHI). Trading any of Petry, Juulsen, Brook and Fleury isn't much of a loss if the Habs land a left shot D because Karlsson can go back to his normal side split ice times with Weber giving a one two punch along the right side.

Why the Habs shouldn't do it: the cap hit would forever hurt the Habs if they decide to go all in then rebuild, Karlsson can still play but his body has taken a beating similar to Weber and both could be walking statues in 4 years.

Habs main focus at the deadline should be to move Alzner, with the expansion draft coming up unless he waives his NTC the Habs would be forced to protect him exposing another much better player, retaining anymore than 1250000 of his contract would hurt the Habs for the next two years when they will have a number of contracts up.

Karlsson is highly unlikely to sign in Montreal after playing for a divisional rival for most of his career. He wants to win and will likely to a pay cut and sign with a top ranked team if they can move enough cap he'll likely sign for $9M to a contender.

Cheers

It's a lot easier said than done. It's much harder to maintain the offensive zone, defend, and clear the puck on your off-side... Kind of like you said, I think any team that signs Karlsson to more than 5 years at over $9M will really regret it after years 3 or 4. He's a great player but his injuries will catch up to him eventually.

Habs are better off pursuing Jake Gardiner than Karlsson IMO.

Do you think this puts them in contention with Boston, Tampa, and Toronto? I don’t. I think this 7 year commitment still has them 4th best in the division, so what’s the point?

Is current edition of Karlsson a good value at 10.25m even on his right side?

You're probably right but fact is Leafs and Tampa are going to go through some changes in order to re-sign key players, both their defenses will be different. For the better? Who knows. Habs are going to come back with almost the same team and hopefully a guy that can play top pair with Weber and help the powerplay. I think Kotkaniemi will have a great second season and put up 50 points, Drouin will be more consistent both should equal a much better powerplay. Weber will be playing from the start of the season and the Habs should have a goalie that can play 20-35 games for them which should mean 5-10 points more than last year putting them right in the mix to be a top team in the juggernaut Atlantic. That being said as we watched this year anything can happen in the playoffs so I'd be happy with the Habs just squeaking in even the I expect them to challenge for one of the three spots. Boston could have an off year after playing so much this year too, especially if they're hungover from winning.

Nope I think with the Habs investing so much in Price they can't afford another big contract, but for the Habs to get a chance at Karlsson signing they have to pay extra.

Actually the Habs seem to have some hope. Looks like they have prospects that are going to be NHLers.

Or we just trade Petry for a LHD.

If we sign Karlsson.

Ideally yes and I've seen a lot of posts suggesting Petry and a pick or B level prospect for Ghost but I know Bergevin loves Petry, plus the 15 team no trade list will likely be a factor

We dont need Karlsson, just come back with the same team and we should be on the 3rd or 4th spot in the Atlantic
