You're not the first one to suggest Gally for Leddy but it's just not happening.

Kapanen trade makes no sense. For $300k less you can offersheet for a 2nd round pick. He isn't worth an unprotected 1st and 3rd

If you want his rights - threaten Dubas with a $4.2M offersheet. It's unlikely he can match without sacrificing someone else from the roster. Then, trade a prospect (David Quenneville? RHD) with a 2nd for Kapanen's rights. He's technically never offersheeted just the threat of one. We can then sign him to any combination of term/AAV without giving up that 1st/3rd compensation

So originally I had Leddy going to the Canadiens for a second and a third. I thought about it, and saw other people saying a fourth + leddy, but figured a third and him would probably get it done. There aren't a lot of defense that can carry like him available. I thought about sending Wilde too, and had an idea for another swap to get us a second and do leddy + a second for Gally. I think that for sure gets done. Leddy + a third is close in my mind, especially if we hold a little salary, maybe send the 2020 second rounder instead.

Of course you can always threaten an offersheet, but I was trying to think of a deal that gets done for sure as an armchair GM. The threat of one and doing the deal under my circumstances assumes it gets done, and then people just comment that "it never does" lol. I also got rid of our second rounder, and tried to not blow up our 2020 draft.

Maybe a second in 2020 and a third this year?

This was the right move. I think we'd rather move Kappy for a ready player than magic beans (been seeing Greenway for Kappy from min) but offersheets don't exist until they do and shouldn't be a huge factor in trade negotiations.

There is no, "why trade when you can os"

Lou has worked 32 years in the NHL and has never once made an os.

Not questioning Leddy's value, he'd be a great addition for the Habs just not at the price of Gallagher. Gally is beloved by his teammates and fans alike, is a back to back 30 goal scorer, has the attitude that you wish every player on your team had and is all this for under 4 million. Leddy to Montreal is a realistic possibility just pick another target as a return.

I don't think the 23rd overall is a big loss. It's entirely possible we lose Lehner and struggle with goals and end up with a higher pick in 2020. I'm 30 years old, and I've never seen the islanders go further than they did this year, it's an outlier. I'd rather lose the 23rd pick for a guy who put up 50 points at 22 and maybe get a higher pick (if we get lower than the trade was worth it.)

The offersheet money amount he'll probably get is a first and a third, and I think you probably have to beat that to get him from TOR. MAYBE a second and a prospect? But I think Tor takes this, and it benefits both teams. I wouldn't be upset. Maybe it turns into a mistake later, but time would have to tell.

Or I can hope your GM slips up and lets him go smile

I know Tartar is possible. We need Centers too.

I thought so too, but I've learned the hard way. Plus, fun to play with that extra money to see what could happen if he walks.

Every day it doesn't happen, I think it's less likely though. I think if he talks to another team, he's gone. maybe I just have trust issues now.

It's pretty impressive how much he keeps the media quiet too. I always knew that, but with him as GM now it's weird.

The two isles beat writes had Nelson details just minutes before the official announcement. No rumors, then done deal. However, a few people seemed to have known before hand, so they had details, and didn't leak. Pretty impressive. It's a love/hate thing too. I hate not hearing a peep, but I love how much that probably helps with negotiations and that he runs it so oldschool.
