Ristolainen is a horrible defensive D, if he is on our first pair we are in serious trouble. I want nothing to do with him, go after a cheaper option like Pysyk.

I agree he sucks defensively, but putting him with a solid defender like Klef could be better than some would expect

We do not need another LHD, we are overloaded in this area. Also, I wouldn't trade Risto for PoolParty, then it is better to keep it and maybe with a new coach and a normal defensive partner, he will improve. Maybe Alex Nylander for PoolParty makes sense, but not Risto.

Not a bust yet and Seksy is better than almost every defender on Buffalo. As for an “elite top 4 defender” that’s hard to believe when he doesn’t know how to play defence

I mean he isn’t really an offensive defender also he missed the majority of the season with a ****ed up Achilles. But Yeah he’s a better DEFENDER than All 3 of those guys (Dahlin will be better very quickly but currently I’d trust Seksy to shutdown)

Let's presume the Sekera and Puljujärvi was a fair deal. Betterall would not make this deal:
1) The Sabres are still rebuilding (again with a new GM) and Sekera is 8 years older than Ristolainen.
2) Ristolainen has not reached his potential, neither offensively nor defensively
3) Ristolainen plays 24 minutes nearly every game, so a team would need to over pay, not just match his value.
4) Finally, Betterall is a pure bargain hunter (Skinner, Sheary, Montour) and this is not a bargain.
So, if EDM really wanted Ristolainen (I sort of doubt that they do) Gretzky would need to add this years first round draft pick. I would like to add, that may make the trade favor the Sabres, but Betterall would want an over payment to lose those 24 minutes per game.

Thanks for actually giving reasoning. I saw on twitter that Sabres fans wanted to go after Pulju so I made a deal I thought made sense for the Oil. But it makes sense that they'd want him since as you said Buffalo are Bargain Hunters.

Risto may not have reached his potential, but imo he isn’t going to be a very good defender, he may become one of the best offensive-defenders in the game but in a strictly defensive role I wouldn’t trust him which is part of the reason I added Sekera. He’s older and basically a cap dump but he is still a solid defender who could help cover the growing pains from the young guys coming up like he has in Edmonton.

Besides broken again Bogosian. We are on the right side was only Montour and Risto. Nelson is not impressive, and there are certainly promising Borgen and I hope it will manifest itself at summer camp, but not sure.

But he’s getting overpaid, there’s so much better options for a defenseman around the league, sekara is a bad choice
