Description
Notice how I didn't make a trade? That's because there's no such thing as a realistic Jack Johnson trade. The problem with trading JJ this season is the fact that the combination of his play and contract gives him a virtually negative trade value. The Pens would have to trade him with a significant asset to make a deal even plausible. Then there's the possibility that they'd have to retain salary.. I've seen some trades that could work, but not this season. The earliest a trade will even become a possibility is next season, and that's only if he shows improvements. Although I do believe that's possible if the Pens play to their full potential as a team. The most realistic time frame for a JJ trade would be sometime between the 2020 draft and 2021-22 trade deadline. At this point they could be able to make a trade similar to the Hunwick/Sheary deal with Buffalo.

Yep, sure is difficult to trade a unwanted player with four years of term after this year. With a 5..525m raise to Guentzal next season, not a flexible cap for Pens.

Unless they resign all of their young players to team-friendly deals a cap casualty seems inevitable. If Blueger or Aston-Reese can earn a larger role, Pearson will be the most likely candidate.

For all the hockey smarts in the NHL

There's a lot of old boys repeating the same mistakes over and over.
JJ was guaranteed to be a bad contract because age related decline was multiplied by the term.
It's an absolute disaster 1 year in though. You can blame the salary on a bidding war, but giving term was an inexcusable mistake.

Is it buyout proof because of the age 35+ season? Otherwise I guess they hold it for 1 more season, and then pay a team starting their rebuild to warehouse the contract.

The '35+' clause is only for when the contract is signed when the player is 35 + at the time of signing

He was already not a good player so term on its own isn't an issue. If it was 1.5m for five years you can easily bury, trade, buyout, or even just use him as a 7th defenseman. But because he takes up over 3m of cap space(which is more in line with what a 2nd pairing defenseman would make) its harder to trade, cant really buyout easily, you can bury him in the AHL but that leaves you with 2million of a cap hit still.

That's what I was thinking they could bury him.
