Marleau get Orpiked

Description
See washington capitals for the Orpik reference. How much cash would the team buying out Marleau have to pay? I'd imagine not much since his salary is 1.5m.
This removes the urgency to trade zaitsev away for cap space, though that would always be nice, and might be necessary to resign Muzzin and or Dermott July 2020.
Nick Jensen would be a great fit, however the leafs brass could find some other under utilized free agent RD.

Colorado's cap hit would still be the 6.25M as Marleau is over 35...This is too large, I would think, for the Ave's to do.

I don't think Marleau would waive his NMC. He can disallow this, just as the league can.

According to the buyout calculator supplied by this site, it would cost 6.25 mil.

When you say, "Marleau gets Orpiked," I'm assuming you mean he gets bought out by a team that doesn't appreciate him, and then signs for $1M in Washington? Yes, please.

Would Marleau allow a trade for a likely buyout? Maybe not as a Leafs fan, but if he really believes another team will sign him, he could make more money that way, so probably.

Even though the calculator (https://www.capfriendly.com/buyout-calculator/patrick-marleau/2019-06-15) has his buyout cap hit as unchanging at an absurt 6.5M, he is only owed 1.5M so the cash amount of the buyout is 417k a year for two years. He loses 417k on the contract, but if a team signs him at 1M, which I think a few would happily try, then he nets a profit of 583k. Even if he just signs at minimum wage of 700k, he'll get paid enough extra to buy a decent house someplace.

Would most teams that have 6.5M in spare cap space trade it at an actual cost of just over 800k, and throw in a 5th, for Conor Brown? I'm sure you could find a team to do that, and for the Caps' sake, I hope you do. smile

I'm implying that the leafs and Marleau will have a handshake deal; -Dubas "We're gonna trade you to Colorado, they're going to buy you out, and we're going to sign you to a one year deal so we can have another cup run."
The leafs remove 5 mil in cap space, Marleau gets paid and has another cup run, Avs get brown. Win win win...
That's what it looks like Washington did with Orpik, which honestly should be illegal but it was league approved. I guess as long as nothing is in writing.

league would have to allow it. The precedent set by the orpik deal would force the league to allow any other similar deal, until a new CBA is ratified that has a rule against it.

Maybe the league can't disallow it, but still I believe that Marleau is not waiving his NMC.

Its ridiculous that the league allowed it to begin with(especially since they didn't allow some other deals in the past that didn't seem as bad) but since they for some reason did allow it this time they would have to allow it to happen again.

It's a legal move, until the next CBA forbid it.

Hats of to you for thinking about that precedent. I'm mad I didn't thought about this...

Horton on LITR, Brown trade and now Marleau trade-buyout-resign is the best answer to TML cap problems I have seen on this site. And I have seen a lot.

5 stars!
