When you say, "Marleau gets Orpiked," I'm assuming you mean he gets bought out by a team that doesn't appreciate him, and then signs for $1M in Washington? Yes, please.
Would Marleau allow a trade for a likely buyout? Maybe not as a Leafs fan, but if he really believes another team will sign him, he could make more money that way, so probably.
Even though the calculator (
https://www.capfriendly.com/buyout-calculator/patrick-marleau/2019-06-15) has his buyout cap hit as unchanging at an absurt 6.5M, he is only owed 1.5M so the cash amount of the buyout is 417k a year for two years. He loses 417k on the contract, but if a team signs him at 1M, which I think a few would happily try, then he nets a profit of 583k. Even if he just signs at minimum wage of 700k, he'll get paid enough extra to buy a decent house someplace.
Would most teams that have 6.5M in spare cap space trade it at an actual cost of just over 800k, and throw in a 5th, for Conor Brown? I'm sure you could find a team to do that, and for the Caps' sake, I hope you do.
