Would Flyers be Willing To Bail Them Out

Description
It's pretty ridiculous that ex-GM Chiarelli was allowed to extend Mikko Koskinen a day (I believe) before he was fired.

Looking around the league, there are only a number of teams that might be able to bail this organization out of their most recent mistep, but it will cost them.

I've chosen the Flyers because Carter Hart will still be on his ELC deal (provided he doesn't surpass 40 games played) when Koskinen's contract is up. Their combined contract value would still be less than starting goalies for the majority of teams.

Am I neither an Oilers fan or Flyers fan, so hopefully trade value going each way, considering the circumstances are reasonably and objectively fair.

The biggest question that will probably pop up in replies - why would the Flyers ever do this?

Well, although there is obvious risk to acquiring prospects on the cusp of being NHL-ready, both young wingers could use a change of scenery I am sure, and who both have the potential to be quality NHLers in the near future. In Koskinen, the Flyers acquire a very expensive back-up, but who would be able to help with the work load of Carter Hart.

Why would the Oilers ever do this? Well, Matthew Strome is no sure thing as far as the NHL is concerned, but has shown flashes of brilliance and is having another good season in the OHL. Assuming the Oilers are patient with him, he could become a quality NHL player some day. By acquiring McDonald, they save 2 years of Koskinen's extension, which for a cap-strapped team, is important. Finally, Anthony Stolarz is still a young goalie, and just might be great. With Carter Hart now solely entrenched in Philly, why not at least try to get something for him.

As always, leave your thoughts and comments. I can only imagine with Oilers fans will think of this AGM :P

I don't think the Oilers would trade Koskinen for A-Mac, so why are they offering up 2 of their most promising wingers? The Koskinen signing isn't really a mis-step, it's just a high-risk move (and they should've gotten a discounted price for doing it prematurely).

This trade would get the new GM fired on most teams. In Edmonton, they will only allow about 5 more of them.

There's more to the deal then that though. I would say that for a goalie as old as Koskinen, with as little experience as Koskinen, it was a mis-step, especially when you consider the cap implications for the future.

Haha while I realize Oilers fans love their prospects, they don't develop them and neither of these players are doing much of anything. I see this is a win-win and keep in mind, Oilers would be acquiring Matthew Strome, who is a good prospect. I originally thought about including Morgan Frost instead, but changed it.

If they signed Talbot for 4.5m would anyone bat an eye? It's not like they were gonna save money by not having a starting goalie. They're just going with their guy. Goaltending is always a risk, but imagine if they pawned off Pulju and Yamo and then Koskinen had a .930 sv% for the next 3 seasons?

Wow, huge no from Edmonton. That trade is brutal. The Koskinen signing is risky, no doubt. But he's actually been pretty good this season, behind a bad defense too. So now you want to give up one of our best prospects and Puljujarvi just to get rid of him??? And we're taking back a cap dump???? What on earth is going on here?

Yeah but a .930% as a backup to Carter Hart (at least in my AGM scenario) is different. There are backups around the league who with a more minimal amount of work, show better numbers. Look, there are always risks, and resigning Talbot for that kind of money coming off 2 awful seasons would have been just as bad. What the Oilers really need is a good young goalie (Anthony Stolarz who has the potential to do good things in a fresh city). You may recall Stolarz used to be considered a very highly regarded goalie prospect.

Philly fans would blow up if you mentioned moving Frost haha. I'd say they wait to see how Koskinen does, as the contract isn't bad if it works out. The problem was how premature it was, they basically paid for what they hope he'll be after a tiny sample size.

Look at the description - you actually save money long term and bring in a young goaltender in Anthony Stolarz and a good prospect in Matthew Strome. Besides, the Oilers messed up Jesse and Kailer so bad, they will never reach their full potential as long as they remain with this team.

Yes very tiny sample size for a goalie who is 30 years old. And yes, I am well aware of Philly fans love affair with Morgan Frost. I figured with a good winger prospect in Matthew Strome, they could actually develop him well for a change. He may not be the fastest guy out there, but he could be a serviceable NHLer someday. It's just a matter of patience.

Kailer and Puljujarvi are still more valuable than Strome, he's not on their skill level. There's just absolutely no need for Edmonton to do this. They need a starting goalie, Koskinen is their starter. Value isn't fair and the need isn't there

Hillarious all around - thank you for that. I suspect you enjoy living the status quo that is your team losing on a regular and constant basis. Consistently rebuilding this team must be your cup of tea. I am offering objective insight as what I see as a win-win deal for both organizations. Your organization failed your 2 prospects here that are being dealt, let it go already.

Just look at the trade again buddy. It's an aging, 2-yr cap dump defenseman, Philly's 3rd-best (?) goalie prospect, 5th (?) best forward prospect for Edmonton's best young players with high upside and a goalie that hasn't really even shown whether he's good or bad...

There is no justifying this from the Oilers side. It doesn't save them money and they lose all of the upside in the deal, save for the small possibility that Strome is a top six player and Stolarz is an NHL goalie.

Take in Strome is more of a failed prospect because he will never be a constant NHLer while both Yammy and Pulju will.
