Description
The Oilers are absolute garbage right now. No ifs ands or buts. I have always said that even how bad this team is you could still build a contender with an only 22 year old player. Extreme changes need to take place. Y question for everyone is, what NEEDS to be done (be specific) and most importantly, can the Oilers become a perennial cup contender?

I dont think EDM can start a proper rebuild, until the contracts of Sekera, Lucic, Russell are over. Chiarelli will then prob sign Chiasson to a $6M AAV for 5 years after a good season, then he'll turn out to be a bust next season

They can but they need to fire EVERYBODY! Chiarelli is not the biggest problem, Lowe, MacTavish are the biggest problems.. once they are gone, Edmonton would be good.

4 step process:

1: Fire Chiarelli. It's time.
2: Stop trying to trade guys like Puljujarvi, you need more wing support not less.
3: Figure out what you want on defence. Sekera and Russell are hurt so often there's no way to judge this defence, so they gotta either move them or simply wait for the prospects.
4: get rid of the bad contracts ASAP. IDK if it takes cap dumps, buyouts, or trades, but there's gotta be something they can do to allow themselves to get better. These contracts are holding them back, so either commit to them or get them out.

Fire Chiarelli.

Firing Chiarelli isn't close to enough. The need to gut the front office, the scouts the Development coaches, everyone. Chiarelli has screwed the team with his trades, but scouting, drafting and Development is what's killing this team. One of the worst drafting teams outside of the top 10 of the 1st round, and they have no clue how to develop players that can't immediately step into an NHL top 6.

It all starts with the firing of Lowe, MacTavish and anyone else associated with the 80's Oilers. If that means Katz is no longer the owner by all means.

Believe it or not, firing Chiarelli is not going to fix the problem. Who is available that would take over?

Players I would build around are

McDavid
RNH
Larsson
Puljujarvi
Yamamoto
Bouchard
Klefbom
Nurse

Nurse and Klefbom are question marks as if they can bring in scoring then trade them but for now keep them.

Yes it sucks that Sekera, Russell and Lucic have NMC/NTC but I think Lucic could be moved to Seattle along with a 1st rounder in the expansion draft.

Find a goalie to split time with Koskinen (Lehner if not signed by NYI).

Build from defense out and do it properly. Bring in that #1 dman (move Draisaitl to get it done).

Trade for pending RFA's with picks and players (Ho-Sang and Duclair come to mind)

Sign low risk/high reward UFA's for short term. If Chaisson can sign for $1M-$1.5M for 2 years then do it.

I have no clue what else to do otherwise.

Lack of hard work and leadership

They look like a recreational spring league team that has a week left until the offseason

Actually since Keith Gretzky took over as lead scout the Oilers haven’t drafted that bad outside of the first round. Jones, Maksimov, Benson, samarkarov, Bear, Safin, McCleod and I am sure I am missing a couple.

You've analyzed the situation well as I would put exactly the same players on the roster and as scratches. Assuming (hoping) Chiasson, Puljujarvi and Yamamoto eventually prove acceptable top-9 wingers, the Oilers really need only a top-line LW to be a playoff team. I would try to trade everyone on your "goodbye lists" for second-round picks where possible, even adding lower-round picks if necessary, and try to develop some depth. (?Kassian and a fourth for some playoff-bound team's second at the trade deadline?) I wouldn't go the trading Nugent-Hopkins or Klefbom for multiple elements (picks and prospects) route because these guys are proven NHLers. But if somebody wanted to give me a second and a third for Spooner, that might appeal.
