Schmaltz for Nylander

Description
How close are these two players; 2018 stats.

Games: Schmaltz 78, Nylander 82

Goals: Schmaltz 21 (108th), Nylander 20 (115th)

Assists: Schmaltz 31 (110th) , Nylander 41 (61st)

Points: Schmaltz 52 (101st), Nylander 61 (66th)

Takeaways: Schmaltz 86 (ranked 3rd), Nylander 68 (ranked 15th)

TA/GA Ratio: Schmaltz 2.8 (11th), Nylander 1.3 (27th)

Blocked Shots: Schmaltz 39, Nylander 18

Nylander is more a true dynamic wing player and the Assists/Points total show that. Schmaltz is more a two way better defensive and puck possession forward. Both of these guys are very close and I would rank them in the NHL both top 75 forwards overall.

Schmaltz is on a $925K a year contract as a RFA and will likely agree to a 3 year bridge for $4.5 to $5.5m in the offseason. Nylander will require $7m to $8m a year either a bridge or long term. For the cap hit differences, Schmaltz is a discount comparably.

Schmaltz and Murphy, a solid 2nd line D guy who can play 1st line minutes, is a heck of a deal for Toronto. Blackhawks need a dynamic winger player and need to move Murphy unfortunately with the young D guys (Mitchell and Boqvist) both likely coming up next year on the right.

if Schmaltz is so good why would you wanna trade him and throw in murphy for a more expensive player... I just don't see the logic from chicagos side if schmatlz is really as good as you say

I almost made a post today with the same exact trade lol. Schmaltz and Murphy for Nylander makes perfect sense for both teams in my opinion. Blackhawks get the more dynamic winger and the Leafs get a cheaper Top 6 option along with a borderline top 4 dman once he's healthy.

I think there's a larger difference in abilities and potential in Nylander vs Schmaltz than you make it out to seem however so I was thinking the Hawks might have to include a 2nd/3rd rounder? Or a mid level prospect, none of our top guys but I think there has to be mutual interest here (unless Stan has a hard on for Schmaltz idk)

He had the stat lines to prove it.

Let me copy and paste his reasons for you!

I agree Nylander is more the playmaker, but Toronto has that with Matthews and Marner and JT. Schmaltz brings more defense two way play and puck possession skills to the team. Add in Murphy, highly underrated, and Hawks don't need to sweeten the pot. That said, a 4th pick sure, no more. Otherwise go after Panarin instead.

5 stars for the Nylander trade. Pretty solid trade for both teams. I'd hate seeing my favorite non-Wild player torch us 4-5 games a year though, lol.

Side note: without making these other trades, could Chicago still afford him at $7.5M?

Thank you, appreciate the compliment!

Cancelling all other moves, yes. But with Duchene, they need to move Anisimov and Manning.

Kind of like it. (TOR fan)
My only concern is why would CHI do that and give up two good (unexpensive) pieces for one expensive one.
Can't get my head around it.

We need a more dynamic winger to play with Kane which should be Debrincat, but then that puts Schmaltz on the first line with Saad and Toews who none of them are dynamic players...they all play a similar puck posession grittier game. We lack 1 more dynamic winger. That said, Schmaltz is not a bad center per se but has problems with the F/O on the 2nd line relegating him to the 3rd line where his F/O percentage is much better against weaker players, but that's a waste of his talent...he needs to play on the front two lines just not a Center. It's either Saad or Schmaltz needs to be replaced by a dynamic puck handler/passer and frankly Schmaltz is easily movable whereas Saad not so much because of the $6M a year price and a average performance last season.

Regarding Murphy, the Hawks have a log jam of RHD guys in coming up next year. Jokiharju is already playing 1st line, Boqvist and Ian Mitchell (both very good prospects) are ready next season and they still have to keep Seabrook because of his horrible cap hit. Hence that's 4 RHD guys and Murphy is a 5th....it leaves Murphy unfortunately expendable. While he is a solid 2nd liner, obviously Jokiharju at 19 is a stud, Boqvist is a top 5 defensive prospect and Ian Mitchell is targeted as a top 20 prospect all of these guys also on ELCs. On the Right side we have Keith, Gus, Forsling, and then prospects Beaudin and Chad Krys. Hawks young D system is jammed up.

Thank you, I think this is good for both sides as much as I hate to see Schmaltz go but we need a more dynamic forward like Kane and Debrincat so it's worth a gamble for the Blackhawks who are sitting close to last place. Changes need to be made to shake up the roster.

There are mostly Blackhawks fans posting on here. I'm curious what other TOR fans think. I like this post just because it really does help illustrate how close Schmaltz is to Nylander. The whole idea of Nylander being a Top 10 RWer is a little far fetched for what he's actually done. If we're projecting into the future...ok fine... But 61 points twice while playing on a stacked offensive team isn't screaming top 10 to me. I also 100% agree with the narrative breaking down the two players. Schmaltz has a little bit of an identity crisis right now between center and winger. It's the reason why he'd bridge for less and that bridge for less is why I don't really want to trade him. Now throw in Murphy combined with wanted to keep Ian MItchell and Chad Krys I would probably the trade, but it's a tough one. I'm not sold Nylander will live up to whatever his next contract will be.

The Hawks don't have anything the Leafs want right now. Murphy is NOT a top 4 D. He's barely an NHL one. He's horrible with and without the puck. If Leafs are trading Nylander you better believe it's either Debrincat, and/or Joki coming back. Schmaltz is decent but definitely not on Nylanders level. No where close.

What is it like, to live in your fantasy world, where you could ever think that Nylander could ever be worth DeBrincat... yet again DeBrincat+Jokiharju?

You obviously don't watch enough hockey to say Murphy is not a solid 2nd liner and then to say barely an NHL D guy....that's ignorance. Then you actually think Nylander will return Jokiharju 'and/or' Debrincat? LMAO Debrincat is better player 365 days a year then Nylander and Jokiharju is a 19 year old 1st line Defender on a 3 year ELC..every team in the league will take Jokiharju over Nylander....TOR can have him, sure, along with a 1st round pick with Nylander and even then, not likely the Hawks will do it. Then you say Schmaltz is 'decent'....dude just stop you are embarassing yourself. Go read the description.

I watch A LOT of hockey thanks. Maybe you need to watch more. I look at the numbers and watch the game and both together tell me he's not an NHL D man.

As for Schmaltz you threw up a couple of numbers that are fairly similar and said look they're the same player basically that means they have the same value. I looked at your description and kept looking at different numbers. Sure Schmaltz is decent defensively but Nylander is closing in on elite offensively FAST. He'd be over a point per game... if he was playing.

Now's he's not a NHL D man??? Dude, get out of here, you don't know what you're talking about.

I put up all the common stats tracked. Schmaltz is decent defensively? He's one of the best defensive forwards in the game. And Nylander would be a point a game?

You are obviously a fanboy.

Why is Ruuta not good? From everything I have seen from him he is the exact d man toronto needs Big, Dman, right handed, could possibly play 1st pairing with Rielly if needed. From every hawks game I have watched he has looked great.

Also Murphy has played 0 games this year and im not sure why. Injured or healthy scratch?

Murphy is injured and coming back the 1st week of December. Murphy is a better player hands down. Rutta is a 3rd pairing and not bad per se for a 3rd pairing but Murphy is a solid 2nd and can slot to the 1st. Both are right handed guys. Either one works in the end.

Good proposal.

Ignore the trolls that think Nylander returns Draisaitl at a minimum. Sadly, they can't simply value their players highly without devaluing the rest of the league (Murphy not an NHL'r).
