This painful. He dominated the KHL for years before coming over. He's looked strong in Hershey and he's still adjusting to NA ice, obviously he's going to struggle early on. He only has 4 GP so have some patience. He will develop into an elite NHL goalie.
Yes. Samsonov might be the most valuable prospect in hockey right now. Certainly a future starting goalie.
Thomas is not far behind. 2ppg regular season. 1.5ppg playoffs in junior. Still junior eligible.

I think it's better to find guys who improve under playoff pressure, but staying at 1.5ppg sounds decent. But only one assist in 6 NHL games says not to rush him.
The proposal is to jumpstart the Caps' forward prospect pool while they have plenty of depth at goalie.... Or do they? Three goalies left under contract? They have fifty contracts. Need to include one they don't want, and get back a depth goalie who could step in and play 20 NHL games if Holtby gets hurt. That's what Samsonov represents by January. By next year, he could be a starter.
But Thomas by next year could be a top six forward with three years left on his ELC, and Copley and Vanecek could be 1a/1b in three years, in net.
You're trading a 22nd draft pick born in 97 with three left on ELC for a 20th pick, born in 99, with essentially four years left on his ELC. It's not about absolute value, but about whether either is necessary under the 3yr limit of Ovechkin's current contract. If Samsonov isn't expected to get great until four years out, they can afford to trade him for someone who helps sooner, and take a couple longshot goalies next year.
I'm starting to believe Copley can play, so that gives them flexibility.
