Would be nice to get Nylander back but theirs no way we can sign Matthews and Marner and keep some 3rd and 4th line players without getting rid of a contract like Marleau or Zaitsev.
Several things.
1) In the cap era, being overly loyal to depth players is a recipe for disaster.
2) The leafs can absolutely have a solid lineup with all the stars signed.
3) If they lose one of Kapanen, Johnsson or Leivo but keep Matthews Marner and Nylander, is that a problem?
People that say TO Can't afford their team are one of 2 types of people.
1) People who hate the Leafs more than they like hockey and therefore have no ability to reason or think with logic. They just want TO to fail so they can feel better. (this is a sad reality for a tonne of people on this site)
2) People who think stars need to take pay cuts so that money can be spend on depth players. These are old school thinkers who can't see that the old model is broken and leads to a lot of depth guys on bad contracts.
TO will put the priority on the big 3 and after that they will squeeze the depth guys. If Kapanen wants to stay in TO, then take a 1 year show me deal for 1 million. If you have another strong year (This is assuming he has a good year this year) then he can get a longer term deal after Marleau is off the books.
On top Marleau, he has a NMC so he's not going anywhere and Zaitsev could very well be TO's best defenseman in his own zone. His contract is fine and I think it will look like a steal in the near future.
