Credit where credit is due: Jones is an RD worth trading Nylander and Gardiner for.

Usage quibbles:
2nd line should be playing ahead of the top line. Matthews remains the leafs best player and having Marner on his wing only adds to that.
Johnsson was way more productive than Kapanen last year. (1.27 to 0.81 5v5 P1/60, 1.11 to 0.73 5v5 ixGF/60) He should definitely start the year at 3RW.

I don't get the Johns addition. Unproductive, negative relative Corsi and xG. Zaitsev for Pysyk would clear a comparable amount of cap and get a much better player. After what we've seen from Tallon, he'd 100% do it.

I don't like the trade from CBJ's perspective. Gards isn't much of an add for a rebuilder, and Jones is more of a cornerstone than Nylander. If the Jackets are contending, they still run into the issue of not wanting to deal their cornerstone D, especially with Breadman leaving. Screws their LD/RD balance up too, forcing them to put Savard on the top pair. Not great.

This package is of the value of 4-5 1st round picks roughly.

Ya, jackets definitely say no. Value is pretty solid (don’t know where you get 5 first rounders from), but they’re not trading jones

I don't know how this would make the Leafs better this year. Trading three NHLers for two NHLers. The Jackets last year with there 'name" defence of Jones, Werenski and Bob in net....allowed four fewer goals.
Either way you try to manipulate the defence you still have Carrick and Holl as the 6/7 Dmen. Those are the players that need to upgraded not Gardiner and Zaitsev.

Highly don’t. Jones better than Nylander and plays a more important position. A below average d man with 1 year left and a late 1st does not make up the difference. Not to mention Jones is close to untouchable.

Also Remember you can make a fair value offer or even overpay, does not mean it’s a good trade for the other team.

Gardiner is so far above average I can tell you are just following the stupid fan base who complain about him. 50+dman for 4 mil and one of the best advanced stats in the league in many situations. Do your homework on him.
I agree though the trade doesn't make sense for CLb overly but the value is certainly there

Overall value probably is, but there's the issue that Columbus is getting the value back in 2 players rather than 1. You always want value concentrated in as few players as possible in trades for 2 reasons:
1. Improving a team's best player impacts their results more than improving their worst player
2. The value loss is offset by the contributions of whoever fills the opened roster spot.

See above. Carrick was actually better than Hainsey and Zaitsev last year by most metrics. Dermott had his best results with him, too. He's good.

Seth Jones is not responsible for how bad the Johnson-Savard pairing was.

I dont care what metrics you use, Carrick was a complete disaster last season and his long press box run shows it
