Would this be acceptable to "start" a rebuild?

Description
I think the point here is: come to terms with how bad the team is going to be this year. The highlights of the year are going to be the kids coming into their own and Colorado losing the draft lottery.

Ottawa has a collection of respectable scouts: they've amassed some decent prospects thus far and I personally believe that a full rebuild isn't going to be a 5-year ordeal. Maybe 3. The goal is Lafreniere next year. Collect prospects now. Ottawa will have an advantage with college UFAs: there is an immediate opportunity to play in the NHL next season.

Good luck Sens fans.

All the trades look ok, maybe a small piece needs to be added to the Stone deal and Edmonton isnt giving enough back. Althought, id ask for Jake Bean and a 1st if im Ottawa for Duchene

Most of these trades have more value to sens then Karlsson trade.
I doubt these guys fetch this much, whether it's because sens are a mess or because these players don't have this kind of value or not.

The Edmonton deal is more than fair: it's the same price they'd pay Carolina for Faulk. Kassian, a 2nd, and a prospect. Lucic and a 4th for Ryan has been rated as a fair trade on here before. If anything, a conditional pick if Ryan catches fire with either McDavid or Draisaitl could be added.

Instead of a 3rd from Dallas, Honka and a 5th? Covers the extra asset part while having a player come back.

Also, the idea regarding getting Faulk instead of a prospect is to bring in MORE assets. Bean is a terrific player, and I don't disagree that he's someone that the Senators should target, but I don't think that it's super realistic that a 1st would come back with him. I think as a rebuilding team, having that additional 1st rounder is more crucial.

COnsidering Ottawa is ran by morons in the front office.. You may like to get this back. But in reality you will get magic beans and 6th rd picks.

Anderson is not worth much at his age and after his crappy year.

Stone cant sign an extension till Jan 1st.

No because they don’t have their 1st.
They only blow it up this year if they get the pick back in the process.

As if Colorado is giving that pick back. Karlsson would have been the only way to get that back. It doesn't make sense for this team to stand pat and be mediocre for a year before losing any valuable assets they currently have to UFA.

That's not a very well-thought out approach to this team tbh.

The trades don't look too unbalanced really. I think the mistake in the Karlsson deal is that OTT accepted quantity instead of quality. But Karlsson was very clear he will be going to free agency for maximum $$$ and flexibility in long-term location next summer, so that would have really hurt his value.

Don't think Duchene or Stone have made such statements which would also make them pure rentals for 1 season only. The values you have in your trades are not far off what Pacioretty brought back, and his deal depended on an extension agreement being reached. Hopefully for Ottawa's sake Duchene and Stone will think similarly and be willing to agree to extensions quickly after trades are made, rather than going to UFA.

Despite comments above, also think Anderson still has value to contending teams looking forward to the playoffs - he has shown he can get it done in recent playoffs (save% of 0.970 in 4 games in 2015, and 0.922 in 19 games during the long 2017 playoff run). His stats for that 2017 playoff run are essentially identical to Connor Hellebuck in Winnipeg last year. I can think of lots of teams (Phila, St. Louis, etc, etc.) that would love to have that kind of experienced guy as insurance late in the year. They just should not try to play a 37-year old 50-60 games a year as OTT has done last few years.

Good luck on the season, I'm very much looking forward to the Avalanche picking 4th overall in the draft next year. Sweet justice...in a backward way

Shedding salary and bringing in a 2nd and Samorukov mostly. Does it need to be tweaked? Jones > Samorukov?

The saving between Lucic and Ryan is minimal though. They'd be better off simply trading Faulk, who is a pretty decent asset for a package of picks and prospects. Now your probably thinking "Yeah but Ottawa got a bad return for Karlsson, why would they get a good return for Faulk". You're right. But then why trade for him in the first trade to begin with? They'd be better not asking for Faulk in the first trade for Duchene, getting picks and prospects instead, let Carolina simply move Faulk to a team that needs him for full value. Because plenty teams would be calling and there wouldn't be any major rush to have to move him.

Truth is, with all the weird trades lately, I don't know what to think. What a time to be alive!
