Depends on what Nylander is looking for. If he wants $7M+ on a long term deal then that screws Toronto for the Matthews and Marner contracts. DeBrincat can score 30+ goals next to Tavares for the next 2 years at a cheap deal. Two defensive defensemen coming back as well. This deal makes them better.

I can't see TOR saying yes to this. However, that OTT trade...I can't see Bowman doing that. $3.25M is too much money for Zach Smith. Maybe, the hawks will need to take on Zach's contract, but there would have to be something better coming back to CHI. Melnyk is saving $6.75M out of his pocket by doing this trade...which we all know he looks after.

What with Hawks fans suddenly targeting Nylander all of a sudden? There are plenty of other good young RFAs out there, not to mention Max Pacioretty, who would fit nicely in Chicago but would be hard to resign due to their cap issues. If the Hawks want Nylander that bad, it is going to cost them Adam Boqvist, Nick Schmaltz and their 2019 1st rounder. Murphy really brings no value to do the table other than he is a RHD defenseman and would really be a pure cap dump for Chicago. I don't think the Leafs would bite on his contract though.

Yes, but how much will DeBrincat want once his ELC ends? The cap hits of DeBrincat, Murphy and Rutta will easily exceed Nylanders asking price which probably will be around 6-7M. Also the Leafs can do what you did in this post and bridge him. I don’t see Dubas dealing Matthews’ linemate.

As for Ottawa, I dont see cheap ass Melnyk take Hossas contract.

Okay you're a Leafs homer overvaluing Nylander. Not a chance he's worth Boqvist, Schmaltz, and a first. You're delusional there. Murphy would become your 3rd best defensemen.

It's because Melnyk is a cheap ass that he does this deal. He saves $6.75M!!!

Hossa makes $1M in salary so Melnyk would be saving a bunch of cash getting rid of Smith and adding Hossa. Rutta is a pending UFA. I think Toronto would be in better shape getting Marner and Matthews under contract, as they are more valuable to the Leafs than Nylander. Therefore, having DeBrincat's ELC expire after the first season with the new Matthews and Marner contracts would allow Dubas to move salary out to re-sign DeBrincat, rather than paying Nylander more money to lock him up for 8 years.

I'd do it for Nylander, but that's just a personal preference.

You're smoking some funky stuff if you think Nylander is worth half of Boqvist Schmaltz and a first (that could end up being a high pick).

What the heck is a Leaf homer? No way am I overvaluing Nylander here. DeBrincat is a good young player with great speed and a great shot, but oh wait a second, that sounds an awful-lot like Nylander. As I mentioned, Nylander has the resume that proves he is a better player than DeBrincat, and like I said, Nylander's potential ability to play center in his career gives him and additional leg up. I put Murphy right in line with Hainsey, but behind Dermott, whose potential gets him higher on the Leafs D depth chart.

Here in Canada, it's all funky all the time smile That's the deal, take or leave it. Your team is welcome to offer sheet Nylander, but the only way the Leafs don't match is if it's the top level of compensation value and the Leafs receive 4 unprotected 1st round draft picks in return for the Nylander offer sheet smile That'd be some fun Leaf pickings, I'll tell you that.

No thanks on the Toronto trade. I am not trading Debrincat with 2 years of ELC left for Nylander who is going to command 6 per or more for marginally more production...maybe...more production. While I certainly like Nylander the player a bit more then DCat, I don't like him more enough to pay 5 or 6 million over the next 2 season for similar production and throwing in 2 middle pairingish RHD for a bottom pairing mediocre RHD. Both Rutta and Murphy are a upgrade over Carrick.

I think Smith is a reasonable target with Hossa's deal as he had a down year and is a bit of a negative value contract (it would be hard to argue he is not over paid 500ish K and he has 3 years left). If the Hawks are taking on almost 10 million in commitment for Hossa's 3 million in commitment, I don't think they are adding...certainly not a NHL capable dman and a 4th. Smith + Dzingel for Hossa + Gus + 4th is closer to fair in my mind. If Ottawa is doing a tear down (Karlsson seems like he is gone in just a matter of time), Hossa's cap hit is meaningless and his money owed is way nicer then Smith.

I like you're adjustment to the OTT deal. I'd be 110% ok with taking on the extra money for Dzingel. I'd openly add a decent prospect too...maybe Fortin? He's a Quebecian! The Hawks like Dzingel...Chicago kid...and there were rumors last year that Stan was asking about his availability.

Easy pass from the leafs. The leafs are looking to win now, this trade doesn't make them better. The hawks have nothing to offer the leafs right now to entice them to trade Nylander, Murphy would be a fine addition but not at the price of Nylander.
