It wouldn't though because teams wouldn't go 7 years. They would go 4-5 years to lower the compensation and get Willy to FA as quick as possible.

Still - four first round picks for a 60 point player. Let's be serious - Milbury wouldn't even make that deal in his prime!

Their more likely to offer sheet him for 5 years at $8 million so that it only costs them a first, second and a third. Still hurts Toronto to match but not impossible for them

If the Islanders offer sheet Nylander and give him $7.25 million per year, they would get a 1st round pick, 2nd round pick, and 3rd round pick, not four first round picks, I believe. That's the same thing Vegas gave for Tatar, who was a healthy scratch for playoff games. The Islanders' picks may be higher than Vegas' were, and the Islanders don't have several picks from other teams like Vegas did, but, unless the Islanders are among the worst teams in the League (which is quite possible given their current roster) or win the draft lottery (which is unlikely unless they are near the bottom anyway), chances are, the Leafs don't get anyone near the value of Nylander. It's certainly a risk, but if management feels confident enough that, with Nylander, they wouldn't be getting Hughes or something, it would probably be worth it.

You guys and this whole 60 pt player thing apparently don't quite understand that this kid isn't even in his prime yet.

The Islanders can't meet those compensations.

At 7yrs and $7.25....I think the leafs would be happy to match, financially....but may opt for those 4 first rounders instead.

On the other hand...I'm not sure Nylander would sign a 7yr 7.25m deal to go to NYI.

Also of importance...according to the RFA calculator on this site...doesn't look like the Islanders are in a position to pay the RFA compensation unless it's 4 first rounders as they don't have their own 2nd, 3rd or 4th round picks

He's a great winger, but he'll never be an impact NHL centre. So, would mortgaging a team's ability to re-tool and/or rebuild (NYI) make sense for a 60-75 point winger? That'll set them back even more years now that JT is gone.

Nylander isn't a winger that makes everyone around him better. He's very talented, but he needs to play with other elite players; his production is largely determined by when he's on a line with Matthews. Marner, however, can take very ordinary players like Bozak and get them career high seasons just by being on their line.

Nylander's great skating, shooting, and playmaking is centre material. He definitely has the ability to make others around him better when he reaches his prime. Now from the NYI perspective, bringing in Nylander for the price of 4 1st rounder does indeed set them back big time.
