I think Severson, two firsts, and two prospect sounds like a solid offer for Karlsson. Is New Jersey confident enough in their roster to give up so much youth to upgrade one spot?

From Ottawa's side they're getting two defensemen who between them can cover Karlsson's minutes at lower risk, lower reward, a prospect, and two firsts. Their lineup loses fifty points this year, which is pretty dramatic, but gives up twenty-five fewer for losing Karlsson, and prevents another 25 by adding two decent young defensemen. Then they get two first round draft picks.

Ottawa might well get a better offer, but if this is the only offer they get, I think it beats giving out an $80M extension before they're sure if EK's foot is healthy, or letting him play out his contract and then seeing whether he's up for re-signing, and losing him for nothing.
