These sign and trades for a UFA are stupid! If a team knows that a player would agree to a sign and trade to go to them, i'm pretty sure that team could just wait a few days and offer him a contract on July 1st and not lose assets.

Right? If Carlson wants to go to a winning team, why would he force that team to give up assets? He earned the leverage he has as a UFA.

I like the Orpik trade. wink
      I hope that is a good deal for Grubauer. A 2nd, a "C" prospect and a UFA.

It's more about filling organizational depth at right-shot D to make up for losing Carlson from a position that was already a bit shallower than most on this team. Green is over the hill and Russo is a AAAA baller, but together they're worth almost a 2nd, and two 2nds are worth about a first, which is the going rate for a rising starter.

Because only the Capitals are allowed to sign him to an eight year contract, and he might not be able to sign for 8m a year when he's 35 (odds are he'll get injured, or bought out, or retire by then) and the amount you can front load an NHL contract depends on term, so that extra year means more money right away and more total money long term.

He might be willing to play for lots of teams. If he just wants to win, he stays put, at a price tag that keeps the Capitals the best in the East. But if he wants to maximize his career earning potential on what's likely his last contract negotiation, each of the first years of an eight year deal can be worth more, with the same cap hit, than those first years on a seven year deal. Because CBA. So he'll prefer an eight year deal, at which point the Caps are the only team he'll want to sign with, and if they don't want him at the cap hit the market dictates, then he works with them to find a team that does.
