The logic is sound, but not this way. You need a higher initial pick back for 9. The drop off tends to happen after 15 and in a draft this deep, it's around 21. To drop out of the first round from a top 10 pick needs more than 3 selections in my opinion.

I think hughes will be looking to make a trade of that type, especially if they identify a Dach type deal available. Move up to the get the 17th to flip it with a propsect package for someone they really want

Habs would beat that package for the 9th overall.

I think Detroit would look at doing the opposite. Putting our picks together to acquire what should be a higher quality player. We need more high end talent. I honestly just think we make our picks without any drastic swaps.

Detroit has a million prospects with decent chances at the NHL already. They need a star. Going down in the draft order doesn't fix that problem. If they can move into the top ~7 they should prioritize that over getting a million picks in the 25-50 range
