Obviously this assumes the Canes win the Cup....which would mean the following
- Necas's scoring picks up in the ECF and SCF
- Jarvis makes it clear he's a key piece of the future core and not part of any trade
- Anderson or Raanta plays really well....they don't need to be elite (and they're likely not capable), but they play well.....still, probably on their way out as you can combine their salaries and perhaps upgrade and have Kot as the #2
- Sadly, I think this also means Staal and Stasny will retire
Seeing the success, Canes become the #1 destination for those willing to sacrifice $ for winning
given what I think will be blow ups in Winnipeg and Calgary, and retooling in Tor and Boston, let's see what that leads to
First take care of existing guys
- Necas gets $5m a year
- Jarvis gets $3m a year
- Noesen gets $2.2m a year
This takes a little more than $5.5m out of the available cap
For D, Pesce gets $5m a year
I think Skjei will be a challenge, he could demand $7m, but will be hard to afford that.....Morrow and Nikishin are coming in a couple years, so balancing that with signing existing guys is tricky. May have to wait and see what Skjei
Chatfield gets a bump to $1.2m
so that's another $1.5m from the cap for a total of $7m, so now available cap is $16m
And hey, let's extend Aho for another $1m per year, so now $15m available
Let's go shopping!
I think there will be a bidding war for two G
- Hellebuyk will end up at Buffalo who have the money, prospects, and draft picks to outbid anyone
-Gibson is the other guy available, I'd throw picks and young players at this until it works....even if it's not the combination I use here. $6.5m gone, $8.5 left
I may be lowballing Clifton, but I like him as a possible stop gap in the future if Skjei leaves...not as good obviously, but keeps the quality pretty high as Morrow and Nikishin arrive. Burns may also retire at that time, allowing Canes to keep Skjei
$6.75m left
Fast is a winner, bringing him back $4.75m left
considering two alternatives
-send Toews out a winner, get him to sign a $2.5m or $3m deal for 1 year to win the Cup, then find another winger
or get really creative and try to get Bertuzzi (a poor man's Tkachuk) who I think is a perfect fit for this team.
OK, sending Turbo back to Chicago to be a set up man for Bedard. If it doesn't work out for Chi, it's an expiring contract, so no biggie for them. Granted, they may save money to spend big to surround Bedard with talent, but if they are smart they'll take a more measured approach, can't afford a bad long term contract when they may have another early round 1st round pick and need money for long term signing of young stars.
OK, so now, $9.75m to spend....let's have some fun
Signing Bertuzzi for $6m this year, that bumps to $7.5m next year....which will come from Toews after a 1 year deal for $2m
$1.75 left for one winger, heck, let's bring back MacEachern...he's played well in the playoffs, give him a chance for $900K
I was informed yesterday that thinking Staal would retire was "Delusional", even if he wins the cup. I imagine said Canes fan will be in here shortly to yell that again, and then probably trash Gibson.
If there is a team in the league that has the system in place for Gibson to become a god in net again, it's Carolina. If we made Gibson avaliable, this is a deal that could be considered. I think Andersen did great in Carolina, but the amount of time both he and Raanta spent on IR doesn't seem viable for the team going forward, you guys really need a durable goalie.
Be aware that as of the TDL, Verbeek was quoted as having spoken to Gibson one on one about the plan and the future, and said he was not entertaining moving Gibson, so the rumors that he is available are all pundit speculation at this time.
I could see the Canes taking the chance on Gibson for the right price, would rather not give up on Perets immediately after signing him, but there could be a trade there. No to Toews, just keep KK in the 2C slot and put Staal in Toews' place. And i'd rather not just throw Teravainen away for nothing, even with his down year, he still has way more value than a 4th. And even with signing Bertuzzi, they'd still have the cap room to keep him.
