Description

Philipp Grubauer and Elvis Merzlikins are a pair of struggling goalies on long-term contracts. Each of them is basically unmovable at this juncture, but I wonder if swapping them for each other in a change of scenery deal could do some good. Looking at their profiles, Merzlikins is on the cheaper contract and is younger, while Grubauer has been the better performer (relatively speaking). Both have 4 years left on their deals after this one, and each has either a M-NTC or an NTC. I won't speculate as to whether either player would waive for Seattle/Columbus, because we simply don't know. But clearly something in their current situations isn't working for either goalie, so a fresh start for both could be quite beneficial.

I feel like Columbus doesn't do this since Merzlinkins is younger and has shown he can do well in Columbus, also they probably wait and see how well he does behind a better team. Grubauer also probably doesn't waive his NTC to go to Columbus.

A change of scenery might be what Elvis needs unfortunately. It's always pretty worthless to speculate on a player's mental state, but Elvis went though some very public and ****ed up stuff during his time in Columbus so it might just be beneficial for him to move away from the place where he sees constant reminders of that situation. I'm sure the organization wants to do whatever is best for him so we'll see what happens.
