Description
This is scenario one of two for my Jets off season possibility series. I explained a lot of my moves in depth on the trade side however, have not yet talked about the Free agency moves yet.
1) the first free agency move is a resigning for Centre Paul Stastny. This is a huge piece for the Winnipeg Jets, as in his tenure with the Winnipeg Jets he has arguably been the conscience of this team. He is also versatile, as he can play centre or the wing and can play up and down the lineup. Paul Stastny is also a critical signing in this off-season for the particular reason regarding Mark Scheifele. In part 1 of the Jets off-season, I chose not to trade Scheifele however will trade him in the other part two scenario. Just because I don’t decide to trade Mark however, it doesn’t mean that things aren’t going to change. Next year with the resigning of Paul stastny, I have moved him to the centre position and moved Scheif to the wing. Scheif has consistently shown that he has no care for the defensive side of the game at all. Stastny moving to centre and playing the defensive role responsibly (now centre is supposed to be played) could take a big weight off Mark Schiefele's shoulders and let him play his game (offensive scoring) without any heavy defensive responsibilities. Scheif has always come across as an entitle player so moving him to the wing would probably not go to well with him but at the end of the day, it’s what’s best for the team. Moving Scheif to the wing in my eyes is the only alternative other than trading him.
2) the second free agency signing may seem not too important since he will be playing on the fourth line but in my eyes, Nick Deslauriers can play a huge role in shaping the new identity of the Jets. After guys like Myers, Tanev and Byfuglien left, the team kinda got soft and teams learned that if you push this team around they’re I’ll crack after a certain amount of time. Signing Nick would not only provide a little more veteran offensive touch to the bottom six but also provide the gritty, forecheck, tough kinda style that you need if you want to win in this league.

Once again, this is the first scenario to the Jets off season (part one), so it is okay if some of you disagree on what route you think the Jets should take this off-season. Let me know what you guys think of the moves I made and if you think this team can make it back to playoff status.

Détails additionnels:
Even though we don’t know yet how drastic the Jets moves will be this off season, one thing that is certain is that changes to the blue line will be made to make room for new regulars in the top six (Samberg and possibly Heinola). Stanley is a guy who has dropped off a lot this season when you look at how his expectations were shaped at the beginning of the year after his performance last year. After all the long years of hard work the Jets have put in Logan Stanley it may be hard to move on from him but when considering the talent that is being left out of the Jets lineup on defence (Samberg and Heinola) because of Stanley, I think it is a real possibility he is one of the two Jets that is moved on D. Although he has underperformed, a second round pick is not out of the realm here in terms of value considering his age, contract and potential upside.
SEA
  1. Stanley, Logan
Détails additionnels:
Seattle expressed lots of interest in Stanley prior to the expansion draft however the Jets decided to protect him over Dylan Demelo and Appleton was selected instead. Seattle is a team that I see still having a lot of interest in carrying the torch of the continued “Logan Stanley project.”

Détails additionnels:
Like I said before, changes will be made to the blue line tbis off season. The second guy that I believe will be moved is Nate Schmidt. In my eyes, the deal is either between Dillon or Schmidt and considering this, I would likely deal Schmidt every time. Although Schmidt is a very likeable guy in the room and puts up the points, he is not very good defensively and his puck management along with Logan Stanley and Neal Pionk this year has been very shocking to say the least. Dillon is the hard nosed, physical defenseman that the Jets need in their top four and also has a way more team friendly contract than Schmidt. Trading Schmidt may lose some offensive touch on the blue line but in the end, will shed some much needed cap and relive some of the teams defensive reliabilities.
DET
  1. Schmidt, Nate
Détails additionnels:
Not much to say here. Detroit is a team that is starting to come out of the rebuild and wants to be competitive now. Evaluating their team the last couple of years, they are a team that needs some top four defencemen. Although Seider is a great a player and will be an amazing player in the future for the Red Wings, Detroit’s nightmare on D speaks for itself when Seider immediately became Detroit’s best defencemen in the lineup when he joined the team. This team could really use some veteran experience that can help the younger guys while also being effective on the ice. That’s why Schmidt seems like a good fit.

  2. Choix de 6e ronde en 2022 (NJD)
Détails additionnels:
I realize before I said that the Jets need to make room for guys like Samberg and Heinola (which is true) however, when evaluating the Jets defence, they are missing a true first pairing d man who can play on the right side with Morrissey. This is where Severson comes in. Severson is everything the Jets could use in a first pairing d man on the right side with his size, defensive abilities, puck moving ability and ability to chip on offensively as well. I think he could be a great fit with Morrissey on the first pair. Ever since Byfuglien left the Jets, they have always had a hole on the right side of the top four but I really think Severson fixes this issue. This pairing also allows Samberg to play with Pionk and Dillon to play with Demelo, which I think provides a really balanced lineup in terms of size and offensive/defensive ability. I am not totally sure what the return on Severson would be and I may not be giving enough value to him for this deal but I do know a prospect and a first round pick is probably a given, knowing the recent market on defensemen. It really sucks moving on from Heinola but I think moving him allows us to get a really sold guy to play with Morrissey on the first pairing for cheap (just over 4 million). I also included Vesalainen because I think he could use a change in scenery and maybe playing with the young guys in New Jersey could help.

Détails additionnels:
New Jersey gets an excellent prospect in Heinola, a first round pick, Vesalinen and another throw in pick. Although Ville’s size can be underwhelming at times, his pick moving ability and offensive touch is through the roof. He will a hundred percent be a top four defencemen in the NHL one day, his skill and hockey IQ is just so proficient. One thing for Heinola that he needs to work on though is learning how to get better body position in front of the net so he can tie up forwards driving the net (but this is something all Jets defencemen have failed to do LOL). Vesalainen is a guy who I can see breaking out if he is used in the right area. The Jets have placed Vesalainen in a top six position, a middle six position and bottom six position throughout his time with the Jets and none of it has ever worked out in Winnipeg but maybe a change in scenery could change the narrative around his name. He has a cannon of a shot and it is definitely his best attribute as a player but he never shoots for some reason (there is obviously a confidence issue which can be resolved in another environment possibly). At this point, I would say it’s unlikely he becomes even a middle six player but you never know, he is still very young.

Détails additionnels:
I love Svechnikov but he is not a long term fit with the Jets. If you observe the forward lines that I have made for the Jets, you will see I have put Harkins on the first line with Dubois and Connor. Some may find this ridiculous, Some may fine this stupid and although it may be a risky project, so to speak, I think it makes a lot of sense in terms of the formation of the lineup. Last game vs Colorado, the Jets placed Harkins on the first line with Dubois and Connor and that was probably one of the best games I have seen out fo Harkins throughout his whole tenure with the Jets. He was skating, he was winning puck battles, puck supporting Dubois and Connor, shooting and made some unbelievable passing plays. I think he can be a really good comparable to Svech. They have similar play styles but in the end, they serve the same purpose which is the role of support for the stars on the line, Dubois and Connor. I prefer Harkins playing on the first line over Svech just because of speed. I think Harkins is a way better skater than Svech and can actually keep up with the two. Svechnikov many times has the skill but couldn’t keep up with the pace of play because his skating has always held him back. I know it’s only one game to project this idea that he can play with the first line but as we embark on these last couple games, I will be taking a closer look at him, as it could be a possible lineup for next year if he continues to play well. Harkins has always put in the effort but has never really had anything to show for it because of lack of opportunity. This whole year he has been playing less than 9 minutes a game on ten fourth line basically. Maybe he could breakout if he was given a solid opportunity. Tonight vs the Flyers Harkins will be making another appearance on the line, let’s see how he does

Détails additionnels:
Vegas needs roster players for cheap. It looks like they’re not be making the playoffs this and because Their gm Kelly is very aggressive, there is no doubt tardes will be made. I see a lot of cap shedding being done with the Golden knights and I can see Svech possibly playing in the middle six for them on a very cheap deal. That being said however, I think Svechs performance with the Jets shows that he is definitely worth a third round pick.

All signs have pointed to NJD resigning Severson to an extension this summer (current deal expires after next season).
It sounds like both club and player are on board.

And agree that Severson and Morrissey would be good together.
(Maybe Jets should send Morrissey to New Jersey? grimace)

Sorry, I made a mistake on the title of the post. It’s meant to say “1/2” instead of “12”

The Jets should not consider moving their 1st in 22 or 23 unless it is for a young, top pairing RHD, which won't happen. They definitely should not move either of the firsts for a rental.

Was it a mistake or do you think that Harkins is a better fit on the top line than Perfetti?
