Description
Highly doubt we make a big splash at the TDL but I do think we could use a low cost depth C like Brassard. I could see Tomasino getting scratched in the playoffs too, so we could definitely use depth on that 4th line.

I think Hynes would love to have the luxury of Pavs in front of the net in the playoffs. But I really don't see us giving up much for a rental like this.

Petry is the exact kind of D man I wish we would pair with Jos, but he is probably too old and has too many years left on his deal. If he could take top pair minutes for this year and next I think it would be a win. But this is another deal that won't happen.

Détails additionnels:
RD depth to replace Kling. I realize this is probably a low ball offer but the Preds don't have much to give for a rental other than no retention.

  1. Petry, Jeff (3 125 000 $ retained)
Détails additionnels:
I don't see how you move him without retaining. I'm sure you'd rather just keep him at this price.

Détails additionnels:
I honestly wouldn't give up much here either, but maybe Habs would like some RD depth that could slot in sometime in the next 2-3 years.

Yeah MTL declines, long term retention is never a good move since cap space is the best asset especially if we need to retain 3mil. We'd either want more assets or keep him, he should bounce back once he has a stable D partner and the team around him performs better plus he provides decent leadership value and can help mentor guys like Guhle, Norlinder, etc

I'm interested but not long term 50% retention. Without retention I still would've wanted the 3rd upgraded a 2nd, now it would have to be a 1st + Prokop

More important than the cap, is having retention slots available. It could make sense to devote one slot to long term retention, but you have to consider that one slot could also result in multiple picks or added value on short term contracts.
The return has to be worth the retention at a minimum. One year of $3M retention could net at least a 3rd round pick as a 3rd party, or bring an in-house rental from a 2nd/3rd to a 1st/2nd.
The incentive here just isn't high enough to warrant that kind of retention.

As bad as Petry has been, keeping him at 6.25M just to be a roster player at that position is better off than trading him with 50%% retention for a nothing special return. If the Habs go full rebuild, they'll still need to reach the cap floor and have a couple high cost players on the roster to do that.

I'd be more interested in trading Petry for a cap coming back to offset his salary, than to retain money for little coming back. That way we can atleast keep the retention spot available for pending UFA's next year and years in the future.

Myers fills a need but that doesn’t get you Pavs. If we’re trading him we should be willing to retain and looking for the best possible return
