With how well Kotkaniemi and Suzuki have played in the playoffs, Domi dosen't have a spot as a center in the top 9 anymore, and he's too good to be a 4th liner. While Montreal could keep him as a 2nd/3rd line winger, they also could trade him to a team in need of a top 6 center, like Minnesota. There have been rumors of Winnipeg, Minnesota, Buffalo, and probably more teams looking for a top 6 center, but I think Domi to Minnesota would be a good fit. He could play alongside young wingers like Fiala and Kaprizov, and help them fill a hole up front. But obviously, it would cost Minnesota some assets to get a player like Domi. Jonas Brodin had a great season, and might be expendable if they want a center that badly. Montreal could use a good top 4 LHD to play with either Weber or Petry until Romanov is ready to take those minutes. With Brodin Montreal also acquirr a 3rd, and a conditional 2nd, depending on if Brodin stays in Montreal past next season or not.
In the trade with the New York Rangers the Canadiens move on from Brett Kulak, who would lose his spot to Brodin, and becomes expendable if Romanov is NHL ready. Even if he isn't, Mete can play bottom pair while a guy like Ouelett could be called up, or a 7th dman could be signed as a free agent. They would add a tough guy in Brendan Lemieux to replace the grit from Domi, and add a guy who has potential to become more then just a tough guy on the 4th line.
Domi had a 70 point year in 2018-2019, and while I don't think he's good enough to do that each year, hes a 50-60 point center who could become more. Brodin could be just a one year rental too. It's similar to the Kadri-Barrie trade

Rumor has it Montreal offered Domi to the Wild for Brodin and Guerin wasn't interested. Doubt he takes it now and adds. Domi is best as a LW not a top 6 center. Wild pass. Try the Penguins I hear the Lemieux's and Domi's are bff's.
At the time of the Barrie-Kadri trade, Barrie had much more value, but i can see Brodin for Domi 1-for-1, maybe Montreal adds, I was just throwing it out there as an idea
