So...
CLB take a considerable step back here, they take a risk by trading their 1C for a player who can possibly become close to or as good as him if everything goes well. For taking that risk, they are rewared with the 8 overall pick, wich they can use to draft another much needed offensive talent. One of Rossi, Raymond, Holtz, Lundell, Perfetti is available at that spot for sure. I feel like my offer is not enough for CLB to consider this, please suggest something constructive if you think so.
Worst case scenario:
KK bust and he cant establish himself in the NHL or become nothing more than a 3rd line center. Considering PLD gets 8M they still save about 5M (2M retained on Dubinsky + 1M for KK) and still draft a top 10 talent.
Best case scenario
KK become a reliable 60pts+ center, they still save about 5M and draft a top 10 talent. They can start to contend again in 1-2 years
For MTL, they get a local young stud. KK could become as good and we would have lost a top10 pick for nothing but PLD is the sure thing. His acquisition also means we can afford to trade a center to fix the left side on defense and still have PLD, Suzuki and Danault as the top 3 centers, wich isn't bad. Dubinsky is also not a problem with 1 year left on his contract.
For the other moves, well acquiring PLD makes one of MTL center expendable, since Domi will want good money and he does not want to move to LW, we use him to acquire Brodin (or another target I dont mind, suggest someone) who solidify the D for years to come. Byron is gone for cap reasons but I dont think we can get rid of his contract without giving away something good. Ottawa seems like a good fit for him.
Signing Toffoli for that money is a big big risk, if you dont like that move, another solution would be to tweak the CLB trade to get Anderson.
Note: I think something has to be done about the backup situation too, I didnt adress it and I think Primeau or the new russian steal the spot but its not ideal, it cannot be Lindgren tho.
Ott can afford the contract and get a sweetner to take it. He can also provide good hockey, He comes from Ottawa and he's provides good leadership for this young team.
KK was a 3rd line center at 18. He is only 19, doubt he stays a 3rd liner his whole career. Have more faith in him then this, I say MTL doesnt do it.
I do, I just like PLD a lot, local physical hard nose player with a lot of talent. I agree both could be as productive in a near future but PLD Will always be a more complete player.
