<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>CaptainFlynnt</b></div><div>I wanted the habs to offersheet Nurse 2 years ago when Edmonton had no cap space. They could have had him for possibly a 2nd round pick, or a 1st and 3rd.

They missed the boat, Nurse isn't worth Drouin, Mete, and a 2nd. That's a bad trade for MTL. They have Romanov, Struble, Norlinder, Harris... better off waiting for one of them to be ready than overpaying for a guy like Darnell Nurse.</div></div>

In that case, what 1st left defenseman they should target by a trade which imply Domi or Drouin (a choice has to be made here and i pick to trade drouin cause he's signed for a couple of years and still have potentiel but domi fits more in DNA of MTL spirit and have more potential than drouin i think.), If you look into this we could be contender real soon with a great backup goalie and first left defenseman. Tatar will be resign to long term cause he loves playing in mtl and love the city plus he produces a lot so you cant have all theses player in your lineup.

In this case your forward lineup could look like this in couple of years:
1st line : Tatar - Suzuki - Gallagher
2nd line : Domi - Kotkaniemi - Caufield
3rd line : lekhonen - danault - XX
4ht line : XX - poehling - evans

I know you have to pay to receive which is why i think an early 2nd pick, drouin (who still have potential) and Mete (good potential too but not on a first pair) could land a top 2-3 guy and this is a big missing part in montreal on the left side since markov departure. I think montreal wont suffer too much in a long term for trading this package because nothing garanty us that drouin will become a top forward but he could be on the wing of Mcdavid and be damagable more than in mtl lineup. Yes, Mtl have great rookie but it will take time and you have a window now with price, weber, petry, gallagher, and tatar.

<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>CaptainFlynnt</b></div><div>Mete is a 21 year old, 20 point defenseman (with no powerplay time), and has been a + player in all three seasons of his career (to put it into perspective that is 1st, 1st, and 2nd to weber in each season for +/- among D).

Yes, let's trade him for pucks.</div></div>

I agree with you he's not that bad but if you look into is stats (<a href="https://www.hockeydb.com/ihdb/stats/pdisplay.php?pid=177588" rel="nofollow noreferrer noopener" target="_blank">https://www.hockeydb.com/ihdb/stats/pdisplay.php?pid=177588</a>), you'll see that he have an average of 0.18 point per game in his NHL career. I feel like he's between two chair, he doesnt play physical which is important as a defenseman because if you cant play the puck you at least play the guy but he's not strong enough to do this. But suppose that in this new NHL era the physical isnt that much important compared to 90's and beginning of 2000's. In his case offensive stats doesnt follow he's missing some great opportunities so like Claude julien i wont put a guy in powerplay to score goals when he add great occasions to do so and miss the net 3 times on 5 fives shots (dont bring the argument that he's in the nhl and i dont because i pretty aware of that and i dont put his hockey ability on the line compared to normal people because he's better than a lot of people like the guy still is in the nhl.) But NHL is a performance league so he have to produce on something and its not on physical side neither offensive side which bothers me a little. Thats why i said trade him but of course he wont be trade for peanuts or pucks, my mistake to put it in the same trade of the others.

my point here was that for the same guy a canadian market will have to overpay. Also i know they're others various reason about signing somewhere i am well aware of that. Tavares is native from toronto and they build their team with the draft so it was a good opportunity for him.

But let me give you an exemple of how its bad to attract a UFA/RFA

Lets say a guy like brayden point who sign in tampa at 6.75 m and we are just talking of money here not of the imponderables.

He wins 6.75 millions but clear 4.077 millions at a taxes rate of 39.6% in tampa

If Montreal want to sign him because they are contender like Toronto right now (witch is not the case but just imagine montreal is better and want to make improvements in the summer to become more succesful and similar to tavares ufa signature because they have a great core with youngs prospect that were draft) , for point to have the same money in his pocket in montreal and in tampa, Montreal will have to propose a 8.7 millions salary but the impact on the cap is higher in montreal for the exact same guy.

So yes i agree players choose to go there or not for many reasons but now in our days, cash is something to consider and the impact on the cap is not the same for the exact same amount in the pockets of the players which is my point. All other things equal you have the choice to make clear in your pocket 3 millions in montreal (for 6.75m) or 4 millions in tampa for (for 6.75m) so on four years contract you put 4 millions more directly in your pockets in tampa. So 95 % of people will choose tampa as all other things are equal than the money. I dont know if you undertsand my meaning here and i took brayden point example because it was something in montreal this summer but its the same everywhere in canada.
