Leafs Offseason 3
I think it should be fair to you to say that I am not a Leaf's fan and I do respect your opinion on your team.
As an objective fan - I just see more of the same issues with the structure of this team - an unbalanced, top-heavy team.
But, if the team wants to downgrade in net to pay another winger when the clear need is centre ice, then I am sorry to say it will just be more of the same results.
Especially, when you have Amirov and Robertson, who will find a home there soon enough.
With all due respect to Robertson - I think relying on him to play top line minutes is near-sighted. Anderson could very well kick the doors down, but he is waiver exempt, so why not allow him to continue to develop his game in the AHL - it has been a bizarre 2 seasons due to the pandemic, so some extra time in the AHL and being the first man up in case injury works too.
Coleman will be well sought after and your pitch will fall short to the actual number he will get - If you are looking for someone in the 3 million range Mattias Janmark is your guy - he is a very underrated player, who can play all over the ice, like Coleman.
I also have an issue with moving Spezza back to centre - I would look at Carl Soderburg as a stop-gap and pray that Hallander is ready soon. This move pushes Spezza back to the wing. Also, moving out Holl (when the team needs reliable RHD men) to sign a shot blocker for more $ and putting young Sandin on his off-hand - is a bad move.
Thanks for the banter and the hockey talk

Leafs Offseason 3
<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>Leafs2022</b></div><div>Personally I dont love that lineup. You end up giving out large contracts anyways, may as well give it to the guy who we know is the engine of our team, the guy who wants to be here and is a big part of our locker room. I also tried to limit how much I changed the lineup for the sake of realism, we have developed guys like Brooks, Anderson, and Robertson to be a part of this team, you can't sit them another year. Hyman could get closer to 5ish somewhere potentially, or he could get half a million less here, with all the term he wants, where he grew up, has great relationships, wore an A for us, and be where he wants to be. Also do you really think Danault would sign here if he could choose?</div></div>
I respect not having too much turnover and I understand seeing the amount of turnover on the Leafs roster I proposed looks unrealistic, but when you have so many UFA's and the age of those UFAs now add the another first round exit and expansion draft there will be a lots change happening.
And does Danault sign with the Leafs? Not sure, but he would be the guy I'd target and give that 5 m too. An important C like that, who will take important draws and match up against the other team's toughest lines, kill penalties, play some PP, and can step into a top 6 in case of injury to your top 2 centers.
If Hyman is an important cog in this wheel, then trading Nylander is the way to go and to get more balance.

Not sitting Anderson and Robertson at all - the shortened AHL season and Robertson injury - it's probably best they both get seasoned in the AHL and are next men up when an injury occurs.
That shows strong organizational depth.

Leafs 22 Take 2 keep the core
Leafs need a 3C not another winger who gets paid 5 million - even if he brings a game the others don't
IMO, the only way to retain Hyman is if Nylander is the one who is sent packing to address other needs.
BUT, I guess if you were hard pressed to keep Hyman - you could take the $ I gave Danault (who will PK, take key draws, and provide other EV needs) and give that $ to Hyman and move Soderburg to the 3C.

I think Hyman can get 5 on the open market and why should he take a cut when the others didn't.
And why invest another 4+ m when the Leafs need depth, the Leafs need a 3C - They need to move into a top 9 model, not a top 6.

The signings of Coleman, Hyman, and Oleksiak are not enough.
Coleman is going to be sought after and will get a better deal than your offer. Hyman as well -
Oleksiak broke out this year and will be looking for Edmundson $.
Why not keep Holl and move Sandin to the leftside - I think you can retain Bogosian, but probably @ 1m.
Sign Soderburg as your 3C for 1 m AAV and push Spezza to your 3RW.

Keeping the Core for 1 more year
Yikes - this lineup is troublesome. Can't have Engvall as the 3C and there is no depth here.
I like the Dermott deal to recoup picks, but the signings are not close either.
Unfortunately, if you are keeping the core 4, you cannot retain Hyman.

I get that cap space doesn't dictate whether a player is desirable or not.
I chose the Wings because they have a multitude of picks that they can use as currency to address their blueline. Wings need to bolster their blueline and it seems we have difference of opinion of Dermott's value.
The deal for Dermott doesn't have to be with the Wings - I am using them as an example - and maybe I should have stated that in my explanation.
IMO, the Leafs can move Dermott to bring back a 3rd or mid round pick(s), since they need draft picks in '21 and '22 draft.

Not a Leafs fan.
And not sure what - aedoran means about moving out 2 d men - only 1 d man goes - an under 25 LHD who is an RFA- maybe I am overvaluing him thinking he gets back a 3rd - regardless of what the exact return is - Dermott is sent out and gets the Leafs a pick back. It doesn't have to be the Wings - it could be any team who would like a young puck moving d man who is 25 and under and has cap space.
And one those moves - the Seattle one - is to indicate the player they lose in the expansion draft.
Leafs have very little picks in the next 2 drafts - Dermott was used to recoup a pick.
The working premise here is to send Nylander out and getting back 2 players who can help give them more balance.
Devils could use a RH shot to play with Jack - could be a deadly combo.

Pool Party "for what now?" For a goddam good hockey player. Do you watch hockey games outside of your bubble?
Oilers need depth. Raffl and Janmark are not 4th line players - you need to move away from top 6 and bottom 6 model. Be a stronger and harder team to play against on the 5 on 5 by balancing the lineup and then let your crazy PP with McDavid, Drai, and Barrie go to work.

BOB ain't broken - I think he can rebound. Bring in Ian Clark to help him and rid yourself of those terrible contracts.
Bouchard gets seasoned further in the AHL and eventually jumps into the lineup when an injury happens - because it will. You need depth.
Gourde is a fantastic hockey player and exactly the type of player this team needs - fast, gritty, and can play anywhere.
And Connor needs someone like Kassian to create space and bring that physical play.
Playing Drai, Pool Party, and Mcjesus on one line is not going to bring the results you need in the playoffs.
Benson and Marody get re-upped - just an oversight - I'll make those edits.

Greene has 2 million bonuses that goes on 2021-22 cap. I have him signing another league minimum, which is why it is 2.75 AAV.
Palmieri gets more than a 1 year deal elsewhere. This deal is somewhere between Toffoli's and Craig Smith's contracts.

I appreciate the replies everyone - I am taking a stab at lineups with Leddy and Eberle as ED losses.
The Isles could lose Bailey instead Eberle - true and I prefer to keep Eberle over Bailey as well, but If Isles go 8 skaters - Seattle will Take Eberle over Bailey.
If they did indeed take Bailey over Eberle This lineup would apply to that as well - just swap out Eberle for Bailey they would need to shave .5 m but that isn't an issue.

Greene's bonuses will be on the books for '21-22 - 2million to be exact and I have him signing another league minimum =, which is why I have him @ 2.75.
Bolduc had a great rookie pro season, but I would not jot him down in the lineup, especially since the AHL was watered down.
Trotz loves Leddy - I agree, IMO they go with 7 and 3 and Mayfield edges out Leddy. Seattle could pass on Leddy there will be many LHD men available for Seattle - Ghost, Dunn, Giordano, Gardner, Chiarot

I respect that.
Greene a year older, but Oleksiak has proven to be a very good D man and he is Trotz type of D.
He is 6'7 and has really stepped up this year. TOI 2019-20 15 minutes a game. TOI 2021 20+ minutes.
The other D man the Isles could look at is Murray, but I like Oleksiak's size.

So this roster build is simply to establish the upper limit of the cap or to get as close as possible to the cap without using Ladd & Hickey's full cap hits.
This is what the roster could look like tomorrow, but not what it would actually be for the ranger game Thursday... Bellows and Wahlstrom joining the ranks and Schneider and Komarov (who was already put on waivers today) on the taxi squad.

The building of the roster was to see Leddy's salary off the books - it could have been any team that has picks to use for a deal.
But for argument sake, I think Leddy would be useful piece to the blueline (having Hronek paired with Leddy would be a good pairing) and he can always get flipped at the deadline.

They match any contract with Barzal.
Leddy is still a very effective player - it is not only his skating, his speed, and zone entries especially. Still very effective in his own zone.
