You most definitely can. It was done a few years ago with the Evander Kane trade. https://www.capfriendly.com/trades/players/evander-kane

There wasn't room for Sean Walker so he had to go, but it was moronic of Blake to include him as a cap dump in the Petersen trade. He could have sent him elsewhere for a draft pick or a prospect.</div></div>
Fair enough! I never watched the kings much when they were on the team. I've just caught some Coyotes games this year ans he's looked pretty solid, maybe the coaching change has helped his game a lot. Was he forced to play on his off side when he was in LA or something?

As a Kings fan, do you have any regrets about the team trading away both Durzi and Walker? They both seem to be playing really well for their new teams and I think keeping Durzi specifically could have made the Kings a better team this year

<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>The_Rocket</b></div><div>nice! i mean you do dump kulak in the ekblad trade so there *is* a cap dump here
tbh i would love to see edmonton do that though. run a 22 man roster with 9 AHL players on it? would make things easier for van to wint the division</div></div>
9 AHL players? Did you even open up the ACGM? It's virtually the exact same roster that the Oilers are icing right now (except swapping Kulak for Ekblad), you know, the one that's on a 8 game win streak and has the best record in the NHL over the last 25 games. The only AHL call ups were Rodrigue (who has the 2nd highest sv% of any AHL goalie), and Broberg (who is playing pretty well right now).
Now I'm not saying the Oilers should trade for Ekblad, they shouldn't, and he won't be availabe anyways. But It's okay to admit you weren't aware of Edmonton's cap situation!

Actually the Oilers have enough cap space next year to trade for Ekblad and still have a larger roster than they do this season lol. This includes the Connor Brown Cap penalty as well, and I didn't trade away any cap dumps!

Sounds like Zegras was dealing with an injury the beginning of the season. Don't think Anaheim fans or the team believes this is anything more than struggling while playing through a nagging injury. For that reason I don't believe Anaheim would be willing to trade low on him

(ANA/PHI) - Drysdale, 2025 2nd (ANA) for Gauthier
<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>toque</b></div><div>Apparently he didn't want to play for the Flyers and ghosted Flyers staff at the world juniors. I would be LIVID if I was the Flyers, even if this trade works out they essentially threw away a top 5 pick. At the same time, you have to ask: did they not ask him about this before they drafted him? Shouldn't this be the first question you ask him</div></div>
Apparently at the Draft Gauthier told the Flyers he was excited to play for them some day, and even said he felt he was "flyers material". Then he changed his mind months later and told Philly he didn't want to play for them, but Philly was hesitant to announce that news in case he changed his mind again. When Gauthier completely iced the Flyers and stopped communication entirely, Philly decided to start working on a trade. Honestly I lost some respect for Gauthier, I'm all for player empowerment, but sounds like he handled this quite poorly.

Brassard was 34 years old and everyone knew he wasnt that player. He had 5 of his 16 points in the first 3 games so he had gone 11 points in 28 games the rest of the way.
Marcus johansen at the point he was traded to washington had not taken 1500 faceoffs total in the 10 years including the trade year. For reference sean monahans 82 game average is 1336 faceoffs. That is not remotely a centre thats a winger who is the secondary on faceoffs (its less than 3 per game)
Jeff carter again was 35 is had multiple unproductive seasons.
Tyler ennis was a undersized winger who again wasnt productive before the spurt right before the trade.
A general reminder sean monahan over the last 10 years has been below a .5 ppg once. He has been a ppg player and has more seasons on a 55+ point pace than ones he wasnt.
This isnt a cherrypicked oh he happened to be this guy for 20 games to inflate stats. He has been a 2nd line centre or better for the vast majority of the last decade and is still one today.</div></div>
Good points! I guess we'll just have to wait and see, who knows, Montreal may just extend him and make all this moot

How much does Monahan cost
<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>jpsnow13</b></div><div>How many of those can you fit under the cap? I'm asking because contenders trading for other players will need to pay for salary retention. Monahan for 500k (retained 50% for half a season) is quite a deal.</div></div>
I get that, here are some cheaper centers that were traded at the deadline with similar ppg to Monahan this season:
Derrick Brassard (age 33) was above 0.5 ppg and had good faceoff numbers, really cheap contract and had 50% salary retained, but was only worth a 4th round pick
Marcus Johansson (age 30) was just a hair under 0.5 ppg and can play all 3 forward positions, was on a 1.5 million dollar contract and had 50% retained and was only worth a 4th and a 6th
Jeff Carter (age 35) was at 0.5 ppg when he was traded from LA to Pittsburg with 50% retention and was only worth a 3rd and a 4th.
Tyler Ennis (age 30) was above 0.5 ppg with 14 goals and was on an 800k contract and was traded for only a 5th rounder
Not saying that Monahan isn't worth significantly more than those guys, he is, I just don't think he'll be worth what Copp, Pageau, and O'Reilly were worth

Mccabe and lafferty last year gpt a 1st and 2nd.
Bertuzzi in a sub .5 ppg season got a 1st
Tanner jeannot got a full draft class
Meier got multiple 1sts and 2nds in picks and prospects with no extension.
Oreilly (sub .5 ppg) and acciari got a 1st 2nd 3rd
Theres plenty of guys who may not seem "worth" their return but the situation makes it.</div></div>
Fair enough, I'd counter with all the guys who statistically should have been worth much more, but got an underwhelming return at the deadline.
Derrick Brassard (age 33) was above 0.5 ppg and had good faceoff numbers, really cheap contract and had 50% salary retained, but was only worth a 4th round pick

Now Monahan is arguably better than all those players, but to be fair most of the players you listed are much younger and better than Monahan. I think he's somewhere in the middle, worth probably a 2nd and a prospect

What about 2 seconds with one of them turning into a 1st if the Oilers make it to the conference finals if the Oilers make it to the conference finals?
I totally see where you're coming from asking for a 1st rounder, but there should be a lot of centers availabe this deadline: Jason Dickinson (12 g 18 pts), Henrique (10 g 19 pts), Jack Roslovic (0.5 ppg), and potentially Lindholm (8g 25 pts), Wennberg (5g 15 pts), and Pinto just to name a few.
If all you could get was a 2nd that could turn into a 1st based on conditions, would that not be enough to make Montreal bite on a player they were paid to acquire?

JG Pageau 20/21 ($3,1M) plays 19 minutes/game, 26G 42P, win 56.5% of faceoffs : 1st, 3rd (+ conditional 2nd if NYI won the cup)
When habs fans say a conditional <strong>1st (let say 50% of playoffs games played) +</strong>, they give an educated opinion.</div></div>
That's a fair point! I'd counter with the fact that both those players might have a reputation for being better defensively and better penalty killers than Monahan. I do think Monahan's value could be lessened by the fact that he was dumped a year ago, but you may be right and Montreal won't let him go for less than a first!

Seems like most people expect Tavares to take a pretty big discount. Don't you think he'll get at least what Giroux got in Ottawa? I think 3 x 6.5 would still be a big discount for a guy who should still be close to a point per game next season

Edmonton would be crazy to entertain that. Since the new coach took over and moved McLeod to Drai's wing he's been phenomenal (8 points in his last 6). If you don't watch the Oilers though it's understandable that you wouldn't know that. Maybe instead of McLeod, you could get Edmonton to swap Brannstrom for Broberg, but not sure if that helps Ottawa
