Leafs 23-24
Your values are low by a bit on Samsonov and by a bit more on Bunting and Zucker.
I like the thought of some of these moves. But values aren’t there. You only have a 21 man roster with no cap space so you are in major trouble if you have someone injured.
Lastly, you can’t just assume Murray will be on LTIR. Can’t just stash him there without him actually being hurt. Sure he likely ends up missing half the season. But can’t just assume that. You have to factor his 4.6 mil into your plan, and see it as a bonus if you can stash him at some point.

IMO Way too much for McCabe even with the Hawks taking on Kerfoot. While he is a veteran and brings a little to the table. He is not that much of an upgrade on Sandin.
Adding Lafferty to the Hawks deal and just skipping the Kuraly deal and it’s interesting
That said I expect you see the Leafs look at depth Dmen that will be a 7/8 defender and perhaps another bottom six forward. So McCabe is likely out. I think names like Nick Seeler, Justin Braun, and maybe Luke Schenn (although his reported asking price should push the Leafs out of that one.

I don’t see the Leafs making any kind of move for a RD at this point. They have a decent lineup on the right side, with depth already built in.
If they are making a move on the back end it is for a difference maker that would be a top 4 upgrade with term on the left side (Chychrun, McCabe, Ekholm)

But let's just pretend he's a B prospect so you can get him for nothing eh?</div></div>
I never said he was any kind of throw in prospect at all. I in fact said he has value and rated him as a B+ prospect which is a quite high rating for a guy that hasn’t signed with the team yet and was a second round pick in his draft year.
He has zero pedigree to call him a can’t miss (or A level prospect) he hasn’t played any pro style hockey at this point so it is hard to tell what he will be when the competition level changes, and it is that unknown quantity that means he doesn’t have A level value. Sure any team would like to have a guy that has upside and top 6 power forward potential. But to assume he would carry the value of an A/A+ prospect (reserved for guys who are top 10 picks generally and are seen as imminently entering the league with immediate potential star status) is a major reach is what I am saying.

Seems like you could have just said nothing rather than this reply if I’m not worth talking too. But just so I can see where you’re coming from on your stance that Knies is a can’t miss prospect, since you have offered nothing in the way of reasoning so far. What are you basing this can’t miss status on?

I am neither ill informed or a Leafs pessimist. Knies while a good prospect with high upside, at this point without any real prove it moments remains a B+ prospect which makes him a top prospect, but not the kind of A+ prospect that has unmatched trade value. So in this case he is not going to get 2 guys on his own with impact potential even if both are having down years.
However if they do move him which I am sure is not high on the teams list I am in agreement that it will be in a different kind of trade. One that brings in a player with Term that is a much bigger impact overall both this playoff push and next season.

He may get a first (& his track record deserves it) but he’s had such a bad year, I doubt it. s you say - could be a buyer’s market.
Could he just re-sign there instead?</div></div>
When I say buyers market I am talking about trade deadline buyers market. There are a pile of pending UFAs that are said to be available and with that many impact players on the market the price will potentially be much lower than in past years. So it could drive the price down, but in the case of a guy like ROR who is playoff experienced and still an elite level shut down Center he likely draws a first regardless when you take retention into consideration.

Pretty sure it’s the other way around. Knies is a B+ Prospect not an A+ (or even and A prospect honestly) he has lots of upside and has the most value of any Leafs prospect. But he isn’t alone getting 2 impact players.
Honestly the value is there in the trade. That said I still wouldn’t do it from a Leafs stand point. They need to divide their assets to fill more gaps. One deal like this while it fills 2 holes (top 6 quality left side and third line veteran depth with lots of playoff experience) I think filling the hole in the top 4 D is more important.

Ducks Tank For Bedard
If the Leafs move their first (which I think they will) it will involve a more long term and higher impact player. Yes getting Holl of the books would be nice (addition through subtraction) and losing Kerfoots contract would be important if they want cap space to add elsewhere, but what good is cap space if you don’t have the trade assets to use it?

I feel like assets can be better used. I like the idea of Chychrun, hell I love the idea of Chychrun. But I just don’t know if it’s going to work. That said I think a package that involves a first and Sandin is a very good start but good chance it’s also going to involve Knies as well (based on asking price of 1st +1st equivalent+B prospect although the Leafs should look to try and send a contract back as well to make room for other deals)
I feel like you could acquire 2 players that could make an impact for the cost of Chychrun and while the long term may not be as huge as what Chychrun could bring It would be a smarter use of limited assets to fill more needs.

Good chance he is if you’re going to ask for almost 4 mil in retention.
That said it’s looking like a buyers market with all of the expiring contracts rumoured to be available so it could drive the price down on the second tier of guys.

I would be afraid to play Sandin in a top 4 role this early. While he showed promise, he needs a full year against NHL competition. That said if it did need to happen, I would be more tempted to put him with Brodie. Holl would be very exposed in this situation. Muzzin keeps him safe

While he doesn’t fit some people idea of what an NHL player is in the league today (because his advanced stats are not at shining star level) he still provides a presence and edge that will hit and block shots. Sure he isn’t the best defenceman out there, but when you are a cap strapped team with specific needs you take what you can get and hope that with a few less minutes against (primarily) 3rd and 4th lines, he can give you a decent year so you can upgrade at 2RD next year and put Holl down a peg where he belongs.

For some reason many Leaf fans are really enamoured by non playoff teams players.
In what world does the cap work. Tatar and Ritchie sign for 1m?</div></div>
You are going to pay to trade for a top 6 player, AZ isn’t going to give him away, and if you consider the alternatives you are getting, I think he is worth giving up a little more. A top 6 winger that could easily put up .5 pts per game playing in the Leafs top 6 is worth a top end prospect and an early round pick plus.

While they are not superb 5v5 numbers, he would almost certainly increase his 5v5 production playing with elite level players.
But you can add the fact that the Leafs PP could use a shot in the arm and that is a plus as well, and then you can add the fact that he kills penalties as well and you have a 3 format player that could easily meet the production you get from Hyman for less than 5 million per for another 4 year and I think it’s a steal.

While he isn’t Freddie when he stands on his head, he is very close to the same level as Freddie was when both are at their baseline. Plus he cost over a million less per season to play a platoon role. Really a lateral move quality wise but an improvement cap wise.

I feel like you loose quite a bit going from Hyman as your 1LW to Galchenyuk or Kerfoot. The thing that is concerning is you don’t have much at all on the left side when it comes to guys that can get after it and drive a line, turn pucks over and be a general pain in the ass.
I think the biggest cause for concern is less about being dramatically worse and more about the fact that the team is not improving when many other contenders in the same tier as the Leafs did get better.

Problem is there won’t be a lot of action on Mikheyev. As much as he isn’t negative value normally, flat cap season has made him very difficult to move without taking something back or sweetening the pot a little. Not many teams out there looking to add a bottom 6 with very little offensive upside.

Spezza is coming off a good season and a solid playoffs. He needs more minutes than they were giving him last year. He is a solid veteran and can handle any role given to him. Plus, the days of the straight checking line are gone. The third line anymore needs to not be a liability defensively while giving the ability to sneak a goal in now and then. If you aren’t getting 20-30 goals from your 3rd line you will struggle.
