Yeah because plans never change between the first day of FA and the start of the season.
That said if Kerfoot is the 1 LW at the beginning of the season this team will be poor

Biggest reason is that he had a career year last year, I think he is no better than a 25 pt guy normally. So he is going to want more than he is worth. I would consider it on a 1 year deal at like 2 mil or below. But nothing with any term. That cap would be better suited in other places in my opinion

Pump the brakes a bit. He had a good season, but it’s one season, Grandlund is a veteran with up and down potential. Only thing Suter has over Grandlund at this point, is likely his cap hit being significantly lower.
I do agree that Suter is definitely worth a look for the Leafs though.

They drafted a little deviant, might as well add a bigot, racist, nut job to the mix.
Deangelo is damaged goods, this day and way more drama and stupidity than he’s worth.

The Nashville trade isn’t as far off as you have made it out to be. A first round pick and and A- prospect is a good starting point for a guy that is a UFA. You’re basically paying rental price for him. Sure Mikheyev isn’t a steal of a piece. But he is also not negative value like some seem to portray. He would give a team that is clearly on the cusp of a rebuild, a guy that can log some minutes and chip in 20 pts. Leafs maybe add a mid round pick (say a 3rd)
All that said, I don’t like that deal for the Leafs. I would rather not take on 6 mil in cap and use it to bring in 2 guys with top 6 potential that have maybe been lost on other teams.

CJ said that he cant see the Leafs making any big moves
Honestly this team struggles to make the playoffs in my opinion.
If the team is going to take a step forward Moves need to be made.
Plus the no big moves I believe was geared toward no big signing (Landeskog, Hamilton) and no core 4 trade. Doesn’t mean they don’t look to move a Rielly or Kerfoot type contract for picks and prospects to create space.

I think the Leafs seriously consider that deal. Save a million bucks, get an upgrade on Holl for one year, let Sandin have a go at top 4 minutes, and snag a first rounder that can be packaged out to bring in top 6 forward talent.

Saad should only run about 500k more I would think. Just a touch above the deal that Toffoli got last year. Another alternative would be Jaden Schwartz. Same approximate contract I would expect.

Gotta be a first to get that retention on Kuemper as well as Garland.
Also Rielly trade is terrible for the Leafs. Don’t get legit assets back, plus retain 2.5 mil. No way they make that move

TAMPA 3peat locked McDonough protected
You have 11 mil to sign 6 players. You are going to be dressing 2 or 3, 3rd and 4th liners in your top 6, that doesn’t spell three peat, it spells struggle to make the playoffs. They would be much better off moving a defenceman and bringing back good young pieces and keeping one of the forwards you moved.

What could be happening
<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>pharrow</b></div><div>hog wash.
Look at it this way on the now released lists.
PIT protected Matheson.
So lets say Seattle than takes MP.
You get MP at 50% retained. or 2 million. for like 3 years.
That's a steal. There is a cost to that.
That is why you're giving up a prospect.
So you protect a guy you wanted to keep in kerfoot....and you helped fix your defense, and fit it into your struggling cap with term.
You're not finding solutions like that and it costs you nothing.
I mean honestly, go look all over capfriendly and at all these horrible leafers ideas and unreasonable trade proposals and tell me this is some "crazy" idea.
You paid a 1st round prospect for 2 mil cap savings and what 4 years of a solid defenseman. That's not some absurd cost.
Nor is it an absurd cost to pay up a 2nd round prospect to protect the team from losing Kerfoot who they want to keep.</div></div>
What you seem to be missing is adding another left shot D man who would not play in our top 4 doesn’t mKe sense for the Leafs. Leafs are weak on the right side, not the left. If they were to move Rielly, maybe then something like this would make sense.
If the Leafs are making a deal where they send McCann to Seattle rather than protecting him it would be for a right shot defenceman or a goalie taken by Seattle IMO

<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>linehan10</b></div><div>You trade basically zero to get mccann to guarantee you have one of the two next season</div></div>
While I understand where you are coming from here, protecting both McCann and Kerfoot accomplishes that and more. McCann is better suited for the wing anyway so really while he is a Center as well, I think he should be viewed as a left winger with up the lineup potential. So protect 7/3/1 and lose Holl or Dermott, then you can either roll with Kerfoot as your 3 C or move him to get cap space. He has mid round pick or b prospect value.

Come off with Dermott and Sandin are you're "solutions". They aren't.</div></div>
Stop, Sandin is 20 years old and projects to a top 4 D man. Dermott is an extra/depth piece. But NHL level depth guys are important to playoff teams. Dermott has proven to be a decent depth guy who can give you anywhere from 12-18 minutes depending on the situation.
I don’t disagree the Leafs need a little help on the blue line. But it’s not as bad as you make it seem at all. Matheson however does nothing to help them as I said. I can see Sandin putting up Matheson like numbers as early as this year. The Leafs could use one top 4 caliber right shot D man, potential is there via trade or even free agency, just need to make the moves to make it work.

Also don’t know that the rumours on the Leafs protection scheme has been substantiated. Short of Dubas or a player coming right out and saying we did this, it could be just talk to stir up interest In the Toronto hockey media and fan base.

Matheson has zero value for the Leafs this trade would be an ultimate waste. Matheson would need to take away Sandin spot (which would be a silly since he needs to play a full year at the NHL level at this point) or the Leafs would need to move Rielly for this to make any sense.

Leafs going 4-4-1 per EF
This seems a little far fetched to me unless there is something bigger in play. No way Dubas makes a deal to give up an asset to run the risk of losing the piece he brought in for free. Especially when protecting 7/3/1 would only cost Dermott or Holl. The value in the lineup of McCann and then the trade value of Kerfoot (either by way of pick replenishment or as a packaged asset) far out weighs the potentially loss of Dermott or Holl

Contracts are all low ball offers considering these guys are UFAs. Landeskog gets 8.5 on the market. Hard to imagine him taking a 2 million dollar haircut to stay in Colorado. Also likely a million plus light on Grubauer, and while that might get Saad done, I doubt it, likely another million there as well

My main issue with savard is that he's just going to make too much and not be worth it</div></div>
I think 4 mil which is about what the market dictates for him in a flat cap year is a decent deal honestly. If he can put up 20 minutes a night with some edge and not be a liability I think 4 million would be well spent.

<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>JaredOfLondon</b></div><div>Savard isnt that guy, he's been the worse defensive half of his pairing for years and has had bad defensive numbers for longer, Tampa was the first time he looked like that guy since 2016 because they could shelter him.</div></div>
Yeah he wouldn’t be my ultimate guy there, but he made the most sense, and I think he is still a top 4 Dman that plays with a little edge which is something the always D lacked in spades this year. I toyed with the idea of Brendan Smith there since he can play the right as a lefty. But ultimately decided against having 2 left hand right D men. Ask thought of Demers, but think that only works if it’s on the third pairing.
