Tampa Offersheets
Players have to accept the offer sheet, which in the past Tampa players haven’t done. Point being the main example, ironically with Montreal. I’ve seen reported since he filed for arb, Colton can no longer be offer sheeted as well. Also, because I know it’s brought up a lot, the tax thing isn’t as big as assumed and talked about. When Stone signed in Vegas his agent went to Forbes and said the difference was like 80k/year to if he signed in Ottawa. Smart accounting and how taxes are applied based on where you play, bonuses etc. can make them almost irrelevant. Not saying every player takes those steps, but the loopholes exist to really minimize the impact

Detroit takes Tyler Johnson
I think people are understating Johnsons skill. The other players mentioned here are borderline unplayable. Is Johnson as good as he was 5 years ago? No. Will it cost something to move him? Yes. But we are still talking about a guy that scored 29 goals in the last full season and has been putting up a half point/game being moved all around the lineup before getting some consistency in the bottom 6. He is overpayed, but anything more than a first and its better to just buy him out and I think thats a mistake for teams like Detroit. If they get a second to take him, there is little doubt he can turn it around given a consistent role/linemates, and then you flip him in a year or two, maybe with some retention, for even more assets. 2nd is probably best case for Tampa but imo thats a huge win for other teams still. 1st, 2nd, player and prospect packages are ridiculous, contract is a bit rich but hes not getting buried by a team thats not as stacked as Tampa. If teams want that and they dont want to buy him out they will trade Palat for assets, keep Johnson, and keep rebuilding his value.

<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>Imback123</b></div><div>For Tampa .. I am more concerned on losing Colton or ABB .. Colton is #1 young guy .. eventual top 6 but 3rd liner in 2021. ABB could be 1st line next year as his style fits with Point and Kuch. Joseph is role player and I am not huge fan of Foote so both of then could go but not Colton and ABB.</div></div>
I think you’re overvaluing Colton based on him scoring the cup winner and his early season hot streak. I don’t think Colton breaks the top 6 consistently at any point, he’s a 4th liner with 3rd line potential but is young and cheap. Joseph has the higher ceiling imo and played very well in the final filling in for Killorn.

How I Understand it Works
LTIR does not allow you to exceed cap by the full contract though. You get to exceed by the LTIR Cap Hit - Cap Space at time the contract was put on LTIR. So in your example, they would only get about 1 mill in extra room when they put Horton on LTIR

Good teams cheat
<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>BiscuitBakesandHotTaeks</b></div><div>You have zero basis that it’s true.
I have a reasonable theory that the lightning are absolutely circumventing the cap that conveniently happens during their biggest summer cap crunch. Put your bias aside for 1 second. You know they’re cheating. If I were in your shoes I’d own it and say, “ok, we’re cheating, what are you going to do about it”</div></div>
If you think they are cheating you don’t know anything about how LTIR works or Callahan as a person or player. First things first Cally would never just retire because of a cap hit, if he could play he’d play and they’d be looking for a trade for him. It’s no secret he’s had a lot of back issues over the past few years. Second, he still counts against the cap. They can go over by his cap hit-space when he’s put on LTIR. That means they cannot accumulate cap during the season for the deadline and it limits who they can call up during the season. While it’s beneficial in that it gives them about 3 mill in wiggle room over a buyout it also hinders them in trying to recover from injuries mid season and makes it almost impossible to fill holes at the deadline. It’s far from a truly ideal situation

rumored trade partners
<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>melloni17</b></div><div>They would need to include a top player. Whether its Johnson, Sergachev, or an A level prospect for Buffalo to take Callahans almost 6mil contract. Dumping a contract these days isnt cheap</div></div>
Moving Callahan saves them about 3 mill over a buyout. If you want Sergachev or Johnson as compensation for taking on Callahan, they will buyout Callahan and trade the asset for real value. Its not that difficult, I do not think they move a top end player to save what amounts to 3 mill in cap.

Why would Tampa have to include Sergachev to save 3 mill in cap space? Risto is a downgrade on Sergachev imo

On the flip side they could buyout Callahan this year for a minimal 2 year penalty and not have to have the extra year of dead cap

Does This Make any sense Tampa - SPOILER Probably not -
<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>Smithcd995</b></div><div>What does a deal like this look like in your opinion? No judgement on any counter offer. Does TBL have any interest in Risto at all or am I the only one who sees a fit?</div></div>
Risto is bad and overpayed. Tampa needs a RHD but I dont think Risto contract and lack of defensive skill is a real fit for them. They need a guy that can reliably handle other teams top lines, and don't need him on the PP which is where his biggest value is.

Huge Vegas and Tampa trade Is it enough
<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>BigDog91</b></div><div>You are not very smart. His salary is 4.5 and his cap hit is still 5.8 and it will cost you to get rid of him.</div></div>
I want no part of Risto, I personally value Miller more than Risto since Risto, a defenceman, cannot play defence and Miller put up close to 50 points in 75 games in a bottom 6 role. Miller can play anywhere in a lineup, if Risto is in your top 4 your gonna give up a lot of goals against. He is more of a PP QB and 3rd pair guy getting paid like a top end second pair. His contract is not good.

Offer sheet Point Trade for KFC for Klef
<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>jimmyjets</b></div><div>I can tell you've spent a lot of time in Winnipeg... Where'd you live when you were here?
However, you're grasping why an offer sheet may work here. He could sign for less money and assume his take home will be the same but he's also going to see Miller and/or Gourde get dealt right before their trade protection kicks in so he'll realize there is no guarantee that he's kept in Tampa if he takes a discount. Or he could sign at the actual market rate with the Jets and still be playing for one of the top teams in the NHL. In the event that Tampa decides to match it's like he's making $12,500,000 playing somewhere with state tax and he still gets to be in Florida.
My point here is would Tampa match that offer sheet if it were signed... Not the hear you slam a city you've probably never even been to.</div></div>
Tampa would likely try to ship out others to match that offer. The take home of 10 in Winnipeg probably isn't that far off from what he would get on a bridge in Tampa, with the ability to cash in bigger sooner. Add in the weather and lifestyle differences mentioned above, I have a hard time seeing him signing an offer that low in Winnipeg. Attack me for saying he'd probably rather live in Tampa than Winnipeg all you, keeping in mind I have been to both and live in Regina. It would be a no brainer to me. Regardless, I think Tampa probably finds a way to match cuz that is a decent deal on a long term contract and the 1sts will be late.

Younger and Cheaper
<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>sabertooth12</b></div><div>I don't think this deal happens without Cernak... the Sabres would need to replace Risto and need to get some long-term compensation for this deal. Now the question is... would you ever give up Foote over Cernak? How truly NHL ready is Foote? Also, you wouldn't have to worry about losing Foote to Seattle because he will still be on his ELC. Tampa can keep him along with the other 4</div></div>
Honestly as a Lightning fan I want nothing to do with Risto. I think Callahan can be dumped without having to take someone like Risto back, for picks and prospects, and Miller can then be traded to help fill the hole on the right side of the defence. Miller doesn't have a NTC until July 1, and Callahan likely wont have Buffalo on his list (16 teams I believe) since hes from the area and knows hes on his way out of Tampa one way or the other.

Ya that’s definitely not too much to Tampa, that’s not enough. Even with Callahan attaches Miller brings back more.

I'm a Tampa fan, and I have kinda come around on a JT for Faulk trade as of late. I think it makes sense for both teams, I would like an add from Carolina because of term left on each player but I don't think it would be much. I also thought Johnson for Faulk made too much sense not to do for the past few years though so we'll see haha

Underpayment sure. Nothing of value? That's a bold faced lie. Tampa will not include Sergachev or Point. If that means they don't get Karlsson thats's fine, he is a luxury for them at this point. I could see them making an offer starting with Johnson, Foote, 1st, and Stephens, but Yzerman isn't a guy to completely sell out the future for 1 or 2 cracks at the cup. Sergachev and Point are too important to the team now and in the future to move.
