There's two reason the Leafs are going nowhere fast.

One, they don't have a legit number one defenseman. I suppose this deal is trying to address that, but I don't see Byram as a number one.

Two, they have three of the worst contracts in the league. In fact, the Matthews and Marner deals may be two of the worst in league history. Not only are you paying $11M each to two players that have collectively only hit 100 points once in their careers, but both contracts walk them to UFA before they turn 30, which means you're going to have give them raises on those ridiculously bloated deals to extend them. The idea that they would actually consider swallowing the highest AAV in the league for Matthews is completely insane, and only in the Vortex of Nonsense that is Toronto would they even consider this. These contracts are so bad, you'd have to treat any trade for either player as partial cap dumps at this point.

And then you give Tavares $11M, a local guy who probably would have happily signed for 8 per.

If Dubas is responsible for these contracts, there is now way he should be back as GM. It's Toronto, for crying out loud. You could ice the Coyotes in that market and they'd still be sold out for decades. Don't believe me? Go back and look at their history in the 80's, when they could barely make the playoffs in the Norris division and were filling Maple Leaf Gardens every night. There is no reason for the Leafs to be handing out contracts that pay players on their potential, nor should they have the need to be overpaying to attract and keep talent.

And if it was Shanahan that handed out those deals, then he should be fired.

Sorry Leafs' Nation, you're still the hot mess you've been since the 70's, and you're probably still another generation at least away from winning the Stanley Cup.

How can they get into playoff contention next year?

First, better coaching with a full training camp.

Second, a strong, healthy season for Thatcher Demko with a full season from Silovs as his backup. They need Demko, and they need him healthy.

Third, a better blueline. Hronek is a good start.

And fourth, a deeper group of prospects pushing the NHL roster.

And things like a full healthy season from Mikheyev, a better PK, and a better start to the season will help. They never recovered from that 0-5-2 start, and don't underestimate the effect that had. They had to play must-win hockey from December on last season to get back into the playoff push. The start they had this year put them right back in that grind, and they didn't have the fight left in them to do it all over again.

We're not talking about Cup contention next season, that comes later. We're talking about being in the wild card hunt in the Pacific Division.

On another note, Allvin all but screamed that buy outs were coming in that press conference. They can clear cap space. In fact, they've already cleared enough space in the last year to extend Miller and add guys like Mikheyev, Beauvillier, Kuzmenko and Hronek. They clear space when they need it, they just fill that space right away. This market kills me sometimes. If they were 27th and were sitting on 10 or 12 million of open cap space, the media and the fans would be screaming and moaning about how they aren't spending to the cap to help the team win. Jesus wept.

For someone who has been in this for 5 decades, the last thing I want to see after 10 years of losing is another 5 years of bottom feeding. Those of you who joined the party during the West Coast Express run don't fully appreciate just how bad this organization has been. I've seen enough losing, thanks very much. They are taking this future HOF core of Pettersson, Hughes and Demko and retooling around it whether you like it or not, and it suits some of us just fine. You can stop whining and get on board with it, or you can keep being miserable. YOU CHOOSE!

I found that the most revealing part of Allvin's presser was when he said he learned that other teams don't value their players because they are underperforming.

He was pretty clear that he isn't taking below what he thinks is market value for a 25 year old winger on a 60 point pace in what everyone seems to feel is a down year in Boeser; so he wants the coaching staff to push Brock to play better to get the return he's looking for. And he isn't interested in retaining on Brock. So unless Boeser comes out of his boots these last 20 games, I'd prepare myself to see him in the opening night roster next October, assuming he doesn't get hurt again.

Now whether people in this market like it or not, it's also fairly clear that buyouts are coming. Allvin said internal conversations have him confident that they'll be cap compliant. That means he's been told he can buy players out. I think OEL is an obvious choice here (although I am curious to see him play with Hronek if they can both get healthy in time). And I think Garland is likely the other candidate. Unless the cap goes up by 4 or 5 million this season, who is looking to take on a third line winger making 5 million per for another 3 years? And he's small. Which might not be such a big deal if he were fast, but he's not. Clearly there isn't a market for Garland, no matter how dewy he makes the analytics crowd. They free up 3 million per by buying him out next year. A buyout is a tool to make you better by giving you a chance to correct mistakes. They would be fools not to use that tool.

And then I think there is a chance they can move Myers this summer to a team that needs to take on salary to get to the floor, IF Myers is willing to go there. But , they may decide to keep him and Pearson and hope they both have good enough seasons to get something as rentals at the TDL. I think that would depend on whether or not there a deal available for a player they really like, and they need the cap space to bring that player in. And those two they would retain on, because it's only for a season.

I like the Hronek deal, as well (as long as his shoulder is OK; it's been almost 40 years, and this market still winces when they hear the name Barry Pedersen). It reminds me of when the Avs dealt for Toews. And there are a lot of similarities here between that Avs team and these Canucks. Pettersson, Hughes and Demko are great players; any GM in the league would jump at the chance to build around those three. I think Hronek can still get better, and that this was a vital add to get them where they need to be. They're good on the left side with Rathbone, EPD, Jurmo, Truscott and Kudryatsev coming, but they still need a few more guys on the right. I really like what I saw from Silovs, I think they are going to have two very good number one goalies not too long from now. And if they hit on Raty as their 3rd line centre, they are a lot closer than people think.

Finally, Miller. If you're reading this, take some time to look at the rosters of the top teams in the league and count the number of 30-something year olds on their rosters. Take a look at the age of the players that contending teams like Colorado and Toronto have been adding at the deadlines. You don't win Stanley Cups with a roster full of 25 year olds. Half the rosters for Tampa and Colorado last year were 30 or over. When the Canucks are in their window to contend, having Miller already means one less deal where they have to give up futures to bring in a veteran player. And by the time they get to that point, the cap will be close 100 million dollars anyways; Miller's 8 won't hurt them.

This team does not need a 5 to 7 year, down to the studs rebuild. Who the hell in this market in their right minds wants another 5 years of bottom feeding anyways?!? They have the right core. And this time, they have a lot of Cup rings on the hands of the guys in charge. I do wish they'd get around to overhauling their scouting department, and I don't agree with every move they've made. But this Horvat trade tree has me thinking that they do get what needs to be done.
