Yeah. Thats the kicker ain't it. Calaghan needs to waive, and why would he. Lol.
But as I said, Tampa will be trying to move Calaghan. Questions is... where does he land.
I simply marked the Sens as a potential suitor IF Calaghan were to waive for a tire fire club.

OTT getting to the cap floor with players who will play
<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>LoganOllivier</b></div><div>Contrary to what this guy says, Zaitsev is a serviceable 2nd pair defenceman. I doubt TO trades him unless they have some rabbits to pull out of their hat to find 2 other RHD that can play in the top 2 pairs. With all that said, a player who may be a little overpaid, doesn't cost a team a 2nd to move him. More like they could move him for a 5th rounder or something. Essentially getting no return at all for a player that is definitely an NHL player.</div></div>
Agreed that he is a serviceable 2nd pairing RD. And if that is his only role and he is never asked to contribute on Special teams or 1st pairing, most other hockey markets wouldn't **** on him like he receives in TO.
BUT, I totally disagree with your comment that "a player who may be a little overpaid, doesn't cost a team a 2nd to move him. More like they could move him for a 5th rounder or something.". He is has 5 more years at $4.5M caphit. In other words, he has considerable term which most teams would shy away from therefore you MUST sweeten the pot if you are moving him. Secondly, his contract is heavily laden with Signing bonuses which completely removes the potential for other teams to buy him out IF his performance continues to drop at the current rate (remember, he has FIVE years remaining on his term). Thirdly, he has a modified 10 team no trade clause!!!
That the trifecta of bad contract. old player (over 27), lots of term, signing bonus and NTC.
Common, a 5th round to get rid of him????
Never going to happen. Lucky if you get rid of him for a 2nd. And that is only if you trade him this off season before his value continues to plummet.

^^^ This. Duclair won't be getting that kind of contract. I think till be anywhere between $1M to $2M depending on term.
By looking at comparables for White , and the Sens history with similar players coming off ELC. I'm thinking White gets a 2x2 or 3x3 type contract.
I don't know what to think of Minnesota. Not sure whats going to happen. Hear lots of rumours.
Detroit trade looks good.
Carolina as well.
And I agree, I think Perreault will be traded and I think Ottawa would be a perfect fit.
Overall, well done.

SENS
Also, for the Florida deal, I think alot depends on whether they get Bobrovsky signed as UFA. If they do, they will be very motivated to offload capspace. I can see them shipping bernier or Luongo's contract out matched with the 1st round as a sweetener.
For the Oilers trade, I can see the Sens being interested in Russel. Real money owed is lower than caphit, could help play 2nd or third pairing at RD position which Sens have very few options in current lineup. I think the value of a 2nd and 3rd is fair. But I think Senbs would have to send a minor contract the other way as they would be over the 50 contract limit. Likely be sending an AHL player with little value.
I'm not sure on the Detroit trade. I am really curious to see what Stevie Y does.
I don't think Nashville would accept that trade. That being said, they would likely be looking to offload someone with a big caphit this summer. My money is on a Defensemen going out.

Vegas also says no. Clarkson is on an insured contract and can be placed on LTIR.
Vegas will be looking to offload Eakins and/or Reaves. Maybe Colin Miller. Either of these moves will allow them to rid themselves of MUCH needed capspace to sign Wiliam Karlsson.

Oilers Again
I'd say switch Jones with Bear on that Ottawa trade.
Edmonton faces an equal Logjam on the Right. You've got Larson, Russel (sort of... plays both sides), Benning, Persson, Bouchard and Bear all looking to slot in 3 positions. Sure, you could leave Bouchard and Bear in the minors another half or full season, but next year you are still faced with the same dilemma.
Jones "Could" slot in RD position and play with Sekera who could be a great mentor for him. Once Sekera is gone, Jones can move up the slot on his regular LD position.
Next year, Benning can be dealt of kept as 3rd pair RD I guess. Slot in Bouchard in 2nd pairing RD. Larson as 1st pair.
But more importantly, Ottawa has a real logjam at LD and have NO RD apart from Ceci... and I guess DeMelo. They would value more a RD than LD as Chabot, Brannstrom and Wolanin are a sure fit for top 3 LD slots. And have NOTHING in the pipeline for RD options.

Meh, although I personally don't have anything against Hagelin, I also would prefer to see the oilers get someone a little younger. Between 25 to 30 years old. I'd wouldn't mind the Oilers grabbing Tanev, Panik (I think these two will be more affordable/realistic). On a more unrealistic note: it be great to get guys like: Dzingle, Connolly or even anyone NYI don't sign (Eberle, Nelson, Lee). Although I doubt they don't sign them all.
McElhinney would be ok but i would only offer 1 year deal as he is 36 already. If that doesn't attract him, offer sub $2M to another one of the vet backups looking for work. There are alot of them around (Nilsson, Kinkaid, Neuvirth, Elliott, Johnson, etc etc)

I don't think he's a good GM at this point and we'd be hiring him for his namesake and ability to command respect from other GMs. However, he's probably not as sharp as he once was and that's why we need a GM who can do a majority of the leg work and let Holland approve/disapprove any hockey decisions. Let someone hungry and innovative get a shot at running the team.</div></div>

Lucic
I don't see enough incentive for either side to do this trade (Lucic for Erickson).
The only advantages for Edmonton in getting Erickson are:
1) Erickson does not have a NMC which free's up a protection spot for the Seattle Expansion Draft.
2) One less year on term.
3) The last year of his contract could be bought out as it has a much lower Signing bonus ($1M) versus $3M that Lucic has in last year.
But for Vancouver, I just don't see an incentive for them to want to do this.

Kadri to EDM trades with Tor Phi
I agree. Very big overpayment to Toronto.
I don't think ppl recognize the value Larsson has. Ignoring this season's performance, he is an effective Shutdown guy, who plays a good 2way game and is a RD. LOTS of teams have asked for his name as a trade.
And that's ignoring the problem of, if you do trade Larsson, who fills his shoes as the 1st pair RD?

I agree. Fool to trade Drai. You don't touch Drai or McD. Those are universal truths for the Oilers.
I like the contracts of Zucc and Dzingel. Ferland, I'm not as high on as you already have a Ferland esc player in Kassian, at a much lower cap hit.

Getting Creative
I think the league wisened up after the Orpik deal, gave WSH a stern warning, and heard they issued a league wide memo to GM's advising that deals like those will not happen again.
In other words, I don't think the league would allow Marleau to re-sign with Toronto at a team friendly contract.
I also think you are overpaying for Pesce. I'm far from a Leafs fan but Dubas isn't stupid, and knows Nylanders trade value will spike by mid season next year as he returns to proper NHL fitness levels and if he'd be traing him, it would be at that point.
I also think Dermott's value not only to the Leafs but also to other teams is higher than a "thrown in" sweetener.
But Carolina would most likely be asking this type of value in return for PEsce. But I wouldnt be sending this package out if I'm the Leafs.

Vegas MTL CHI trade
Interesting. I really think the Oil could feasibly get Haula and/or Eakin (not sure if they get/want both) as Vegas has put them on the trade block and desperately needs to offload capspace.
I agree with removing Samorukov and replacing it with a pick (from an oilers perspective), but Vegas bled lots of prospects lately and need to re-supply teh prospect pool. They've got lots of picks and most likely will ask for players over picks.
I don't think MTL will be getting rid of Tatar. They love him there.

2020 after my previous post
I really like the Tanev pickup. I think he would really help the oilers... but I think you'll need to offer a bit more $ and term to attract him from simply signing in WPG at that price.
For Nelson... he'd be great. But I really think NYI is easily going to resign him, and probly even give him $7M for 4-5 years. NYI has the cap space, and with their recent success, will likely try to resign all their UFA's. So that means Nelson, Lee and Eberle (especially with how he has played in the playoffs) are likely to all be resigned.
Too bad for the oilers though, cuz I agree, Nelson would be great.
I think you could realistically get Copp at that price as WPG is goign to have serious cap issues and they need to let someone go (Tanev, Copp, etc?) or else trade someone like Perreault or Kulikhov to make room under the cap to sign their RFA's and UFA's.

Winnipeg 3rd line signing Nelson
<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>ConnorsCousin</b></div><div>what would be enough? Manning has 1 year left, helps them reach cap floor and can be buried if they really don't like him on the NHL roster.
What is the cost of 1.5M for 4 years?</div></div>
There are other variables that come to mind when a team is entertaining a trade offer. The perceived value and gain of a certain trade (I get XYZ in return for ABC) is a big part of it yes. There are cap considerations as you mentioned and yes, this would help the Sens reach the cap floor. But there is also the implications on adding another D to an already cramped depth chart. It really depends on what the Sens think of their D depth chart, who they believe will occupy the top 6 D spots, which players have 2-way contracts and can be sent down to the ahl, which player(s) they think will occupy the 7th D (press box half the year) / which prospect needs nhl ice time to further their development (or else might as well trade him (thinking of Lajoie).
IF your top six is:
Chabot - Demelo
Brannstrom - Ceci
Wolanin - Jaros
Borowieki is your 7th D (that the coach will likely inexplicably be giving more ice time than Wolanin). Harpur is also on a 1-way and for some reason, also heavily favoured by the Sens organization.
IF the Sens don't re-sign Goloubef, Falk, Elliott, Burgdoerfer (all UFA's), that leaves you with Lajoie and Englund who are ready/could benefit from some NHL games to keep them progressing (at some point in the next season).
This seems like a huge bottle neck at the D position. In other words, The Sens have ALOT of options for their D needs internally and it would take a sweetener for them to add to the bottleneck.
Sure, you could accept the trade and bury the contract, but he'd be stealing minutes from propsects who need them to develop who might be transitioning into the AHL from the NCAA or CHL.
Heck, the Condors in Bake were healthy scratching Manning. Meaning they didn't feel he was able to play at the ahl level.
So yes, it'll take a bit more to sweeten the pot. Probably not a huge asset but I don't see the incentive for Ottawa to accept it as is.
