He thinks and plays the game just how McDavid and Draisaitl like (They have both said they really like the chemistry with Kassian). He forechecks hard wins a lot of battles for pucks and knows when to crash the net looking for scraps. Kassian had 3 points in 37 games playing with Brodziak and Lucic on Jan 2nd was moved to top line and in 42 games played (2 without McDavid) he had 13 goals and 10 assists (45 point pace without PP time). Add in some PP time and maybe the Oilers have themselves a Tom Wilson like player

Zero chance Archibald has earned 2nd line more likely a scratch, Jurco is the answer to start the season. Cave and Sheahan are the bottom 6C

Opening Night Lineup
Benson, Yamamoto, Bouchard, Jones, Starrett all in AHL.
Cave has outplayed Haas who will likely be sent down as he is waiver exempt (gives Oilers longer look at him as Nov 1st is his EU outclause)
Persson likely injured to start the Season and Bear has impressed more then Benning so Klefbom/Bear should start as the 2nd pairing (offensive starts)
Granlund has groin injury and he has only impressed on the PK, 5on5 has been a struggle starts as a scratch for me
Top 2 lines are what I would deploy to start the season
Drai-McD-Kass
Jurco-RNH-Neal
Khaira-Sheahan-Chiasson
Nygard-Cave-Gagner
Granlund/Archibald(could replace Gagner if you want another PK)
Nurse-Larsson
Klefbom-Bear
Russell-Benning(would prefer Lagesson here but Tippet like righty/lefty pairs)
Manning or Lagesson as #7

It's a great contract and it locks him up long-term. We'll see how far they can go with him. He has been a really great bright spot on a rather dull Ottawa team. Tkachuk and Chabot are the 2 bright spots on the team. Hopefully they can get even further with them.

(EDM/CGY) - Lucic (12.5% retained) & conditional 2020 3rd for Neal
<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>OldNYIfan</b></div><div>This trade isn't nearly as bad for Calgary as everyone thinks/says it is. Everybody has to step back and look at the math.
Calgary and Edmonton are not New York or Los Angeles, or Toronto. Neal's contract was/is all salary, equally spread. Thus the Flames owed Neal $23 million over the next four years. In contrast, Lucic's contract was front-loaded and there was a $3 million signing bonus that Edmonton just paid, so Lucic is owed a total of $16 million by Calgary for the same period. Now subtract the retention ($3 million), and Calgary saves $10 million in real cash by this trade. Now $10 million to us sitting in the comfort of our armchairs at home may not seem important, but to the Calgary GM it means that he can offer a free agent next summer a $2.5 million signing bonus in every year on a four-year contract -- money he didn't have before, but which may mean the difference between being able to sign Matt Duchene or Artemi Panarin and being able to sign Ryan Dzingel. So although Edmonton may be the winner on the ice, Calgary is the winner at the bank.</div></div>
I like this trade better for Edmonton, but after having time to think about it, I agree that it isn't nearly as bad for Calgary as I thought at first blush.
Edmonton does great. They have decent depth forwards, in fact after their 3 best players, that's all they have. Lucic making $6M to be that was atrocious, also his NMC could be a headache come the expansion draft as well.
However, when you look at how each of the players are playing, it's actually somewhat sensible swap of bad contracts. Lucic (surprisingly) has the underlying numbers of an effective 3/4th line winger. So if that is the role he is going to play, he has been more effective at driving play, keeping pucks away from his end, throwing a few hits and being effective in 12-13 minutes a night. The problem is he looks washed in terms of offensive ability, and that role is likely worth about $2M right now.
Neal is essentially a one dimensional weapon at this point. He still has a good looking release, and will maybe throw a few hits. He has more potential to bounce back in terms of offensive production, and if he is playing on a line that isn't worried about having him drive the offense, he could provide more value than Lucic did for Edmonton. It's a gamble, but there is more upside. Edmonton also doesn't have the same opportunity cost in putting him with a good center since he won't be taking a spot from a more effective winger to do so.
Calgary has some good wingers, so giving Neal PP1 wasn't going to happen, and he didn't fit with the more defensive minded Backlund line, and you certainly aren't taking either Gaudrea or Lindholm off that top line, so Neal would likely have continued to be an ineffective 3/4 winger in Calgary. So I don't think it's as crazy to just suggest that Calagary can make better use of Lucic than they ever would have gotten out of Neal.
They also did a decent job in hedging this bet with $500k in cap spavings, and a conditional 3rd. Throw in the $10M in cash savings, which for a team that does care about actual dollars may give him more freedom from the owner to use actual dollars, and I don't think this is that bad at all. If Neal does score over 21 goals, and Lucic is a good 3rd line winger, Edmonton looks good in year 1, but gives up a 3rd, and this could still work out that Lucic is better (for his role) for the rest of the contract after that. If that 3rd never moves, it will almost certainy be because Neal is a total bust, in which case he may actually be worse that Lucic, and in that scenario Calgary has made a very Saavy move.
Even typing about it I am convincing myself more and more that this was far smarter a move than I initially gave it credit for (my initial reaction was what was BT doing?!). I still think Edmonton did well in this deal, but I think the reality is that just because Edmonton can make better use of Neal, doesn't mean it would have been possible for Calgary to do so effectively.

<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>drewjenks</b></div><div>.
<strong>What did Michael Carcone do to deserve this? </strong></div></div>
In his brief time with the Marlies I was really impressed with Carcone. I was super sceptical after he was all we received back in the trade for Josh Leivo - an undrafted player who’d had a hot start to the season but really had shown little in 2.5 seasons of pro hockey to indicate he’d ever make the NHL. But against my own bias, I warmed up to him, as did Sheldon Keefe (Marlies head coach) who used him in all-situations (PP1/PK1/Top-6).
He brings speed, particularly a strong first step, and a really strong work ethic and tenacity to play hard every shift. His skill isn’t elite by any means but if he plays like he did thoughout 2018/2019 (75gp-26-28-54 incl 3 playoff rounds), I think he could contribute as a bottom-6 winger at the NHL level (or a Top-6 winger for any AHL team lucky to have him). Belleville fans (and maybe Ottawa ones too) are going to really like Carcone.
That’s what he did to deserve this 2y minimum wage contract. IMHO. ??♀️

(OTT/TOR) - Ceci, Harpur, Luchuk and 2020 3rd round pick for Zaitsev, Brown, Carcone
Okay, so Ottawa takes more cap now, gives up a pick, and takes 5 years of Zaitsev over 1 year of Ceci.
Toronto gets more cap space now and in the future, and gets a pick? I don't see why Ottawa would do that unless they value Zaitsev higher than Ceci (I think they're pretty even).
For the most part, Toronto wins this trade. The only problem I see is that they're only saving 1.9M in cap space with this deal. They could have moved Zaitsev and saved the whole contract (though they would've needed to pay to move his contract), but they now haven't gotten much cap space from this deal.
I am confused about this from Ottawa's side though. I guess they're not going to "spend close to the cap in 3 or 4 years." Maybe more like 5 years.

Trading Up at the Draft with Edmonton
<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>YvanF</b></div><div>You're never going to get Batherson. You are not assessing players correctly if you are asking for Batherson as incentive for moving up in the draft (specially for the Sens) as Batherson is the Sens equivalent of Bouchard.
The oilers may trade one of their esteemed LD. But due to their lack of depth at RD as well as the sheer promise that Bouchard represents, he aint going nowhere. The same could be said about Batherson.
Also, why would you want another centreman. The Oil need a good 3C. That is not going to be a rookie/prospect. That slot will be filled by a more veteran player (due to the tougher zone and faceoff assignments). The oil need promising speedy wingers. Formenton IS that. Abramov would be another perfect candidate (but I feel he is too much like Yamamoto and wouldn't be recommended).
That being said, as mentioned earlier, Sens are bursting at the seams with Centre's and if you are seeking a C (which I don't understand since you've already got 97, 29 and 93), you'd have better luck grabbing another one of their centre prospect, such as Norris.</div></div>
Im not saying the sens would do it. Im saying the oilers would want that for the 8th overall pick.

The reason why it makes sense to me, is that Edmonton takes a slight downgrade on defence and gets a quality winger that has scored 20 goals in the NHL, something they are absolutely desperate for.</div></div>
Zaitsev is a third pairing defenseman. If he was second pairing he wouldn’t even be a problem.

It is going to take a lot more than that to move Lucic. While not great value on their own, both Sutter and Pearson are better players than Lucic. Sutter and Pearson have 2 years left, Lucic 4 years. Cave is nothing. A 4th is nothing. Edmonton easily wins this trade. At MINIMUM Edmonton would need to add a 1st to this trade, and that is just the starting point.

I don't see Frost as an immediate upgrade on Nugent-Hopkins though. If things break right he'll be there in 2-3 years, but that doesn't fit the time-frame we were discussing.
And you've taken away McDavid's best winger to play 2C, that only works if you can get great players for 1RW and 1LW now.

I would be happier if we had:
Holland = POHO
Hunter = GM
Burke/Gretzky = AGM
I don't think he's a good GM at this point and we'd be hiring him for his namesake and ability to command respect from other GMs. However, he's probably not as sharp as he once was and that's why we need a GM who can do a majority of the leg work and let Holland approve/disapprove any hockey decisions. Let someone hungry and innovative get a shot at running the team.

MTL deal doesn't make sense because we need Klefbom more than we need Tatar + 2nd. Klefbom is arguably the most complete dman on this roster. If Tatar is not producing points, he doesn't add any value; same can't be said for Klefbom.
No need for Reilly or Hudon because those are two things we have a lot of: bottom 6 forwards and bottom pairing dmen.
I would scrap the whole deal entirely.
Everyone on your d core is playing above their weight class.
Nurse is good but best suited for 2nd pair for now.
Sekera is a 3rd pairing dman at the moment.
Petrovic and Rielly are probably 7th dmen.
Bouchard should be playing in the minors.

Right idea, just wrong players. LTIR basically nullifies cap concerns so there is no need for tams to get rid of them that badly.
From Toronto think more of Zaitzev and from a team like Tampa bay, Ryan Callahan. These are prime guys that both teams would like to trade if possible in order to resign some of their top end guys to new contracts.

Both TOR and VGK can throw those guys on LTIR to alleviate their respective cap crunches. It would be better for OTT to take on contracts of non-injured players with high cap hits but low actual salary as they would probably get additional draft picks/assets to take on those type of contracts.

On the other hand, Zaga played his first full season in Khl and was not bad but nothing really special. I expect that he will play in the AHL for one year and then we'll see.
