Trading Up at the Draft with Edmonton
Ok, I follow both the Oil and Sens very closely and would like to chime in.
I'll start off by saying we don't know the value of the #8 overall pick until we see how things shake up on draft day.
I'll also say that I do think the Sens should see if they can move up in this years draft. But I can assure you that the trade as mentioned above does not get done (both sides say no).
First, the Sens perspective:
A) Am I reading your trade offer correctly? Sens would offer the #19 and #32 (so same as a late 1st round) picks, AND the 2020 year's SJ 1st?????
So two 1sts and a VERY high 2nd which is essentially a low 1st.
Ridiculous.
2020 is set to be a very good draft year, NO way Sens trade away the 1st from SJ without knowing what its worth. Could be 31st pick, could be top 15. We don't know yet.
B) The #1 rule of drafting is: the more bullets the better. Why would an organization trade 3 attempts to getting a prospect for only 1?
C) That being said, replace the 2020 SJS pick with a prospect, and sure, this gets done.
Oilers:
Oilers need help now. McD + Drai prime years are age 23 to 27 and the organization can't risk shaving off multiple of those years waiting for prospects drafted in 2019 to develop.
Oilers shouldnt be stockpiling picks right now, they should be trading picks and prospects for better prospects that are able to come make a difference in the next couple seasons.
I really think that at the 8th overall spot, the oil could get a fairly good player and they should use the pick and keep it. Between #5 to #12, there is alot of parity/ no consensus therefore you are likely getting a good prospect. Keep that pick.

Sens need options at RD as they have NO depth. Good low risk, low term signing that gives options and depth in case of trades/injuries, etc.

Good signing. Need a little bit of ahl depth.
He plays well at that level.
Don't think his game ever translates to the nhl... but could play a game here and there due to injuries.

LOL. Great minds think alike. Both of us see a possible interest on both sides for the Manning and Russel move.
I also think Ottawa could be a good trade partner for the Oil getting rid of Lucic (especially if they can figure out a way to retain some salary and ship him elsewhere for more futures.
With regards to your specific trade you referenced, having watched ALOT of Boedker and Smith, I just don't think they have any value and WOUDLN'T touch them if I were Edmonton.
The Ryan for Lucic swap, albeit interesting.... I'm not convinced is plausible nor is there enough of an incentive on either sides. I see it as a lose lose.

<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>Survivorking77</b></div><div>If you're Ottawa, you do not bail out Toronto from the Marleau contract without at least a 2nd or Jeremy Bracco attached to the contract. You don't bail out division rivals that easily. Marleau would also have to approve of the deal for starters and I highly doubt he waives his nmc to go to Ottawa.
I'd say the same thing about the Tampa one. Callahan would be more inclined to waive his NMC because he probably just wants to play to prove his worth to save his career; but again, you don't take that contract on unless you get Taylor Raddysh, Alexander Volkov or at least a 2nd. IMO
</div></div>
I agree. VERY little chances of Callahan or Marleau waiving their NMC/NTC. Mainly looking for suggestions for trading partners who are in desperate need for cap relief, and players who "could" be shipped (ie: no NMC or NTC's).
I'm thinking TB, Tor and Oil fit the bill. Maybe Detroit. But players need agree. But I'm having fun thinking of plausible scenarios. Realistic scenarios are very hard to find.

Edmonton can't afford to retain salary on the Sekera trade. It'll never happen. Really, the only way Sekera goes to EDM and take Ceci in return is if you also take Russel and Manning.

Teams get this player for free without losing any assets so the counter to that is that the player goes to the highest bidder.
Regardless, 4x4 or 5x5 are simply not realistic so no point in hoping. He gets north of 5M very very easily. Karl Alzner got 4.65m for crying out loud. Myers isn;t accepting anything less than what he got previously.</div></div>
Upon a deeper review of Myers, you are correct. 5.5 / 6 is not outside the realm of possibilities for him @ ufa.
With Trouba also needing a contract, I don't think both will be signed. One or both will likely be moved.

Also, Suzuki will spend time at AHL. won't be thrown into NHL right away. Poehling may make the team right out of training camp, but after 10 games will be sent down to AHL also.
Therefore, you will need to keep Hudon, McCarron and Deslaurier for another year until the kids are ready. There is no need to rush them.
I also don't think Vancouver does that trade as their isn't enough of an incentive.
I also don't think the oilers let Nurse go for so little. He is developping into a true top 4, perhaps this year he continues to progress and becomes top pairing material.

Meh, Centremen typically get compensated more than wingers. I don't think half a Mil over Kucherov is that far off what he will likely get on an 8 year deal. That being said, I think TB can't afford to lock him up for 8 years so they will likely give him a bridge contract.
I agree though, they NEED to focus on their D.

I think shipping Russel to Ottawa makes sense. I don't think Edmonton will want anything to do with Condon. Although Ottawa would be VERY keen to get rid of him (Melnyk doesn't like contracts that cost more real money than the cap hit)... the guy (Condon) had a really rough year last year. Played bad at the NHL level. Got sent to the minors. Played even worse there. Then got a season ending injury and was out all year. With Edmonton's goaltending situation already being questionable with Koskinen... they will not touch Condon with a ten foot pole. They will be looking for a vet backup that is low risk.
That being said, I think Pageau would be a huge help for Edmonton. Perfect 3C, who is really good on special teams and defensive zone faceoff starts. Guy is clutch!

Couldn't agree more. This deal makes no sense for the Oilers as Frost is 2-3 years away, and the Oil need help now.
I'll say it again, I was simply touching on the statement that Frost and a 1st is an overpayment for Nuge. Which I disagree with.

<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>GM_leafs81</b></div><div>Fair point, my concern with Nuge is that he's more of a 2b center making 6 mill. He's not very good at faceoffs and point totals are on pace for 45-55 points when he's not playing with McDavid and makes him a circumstantial point producer. Is he a 2nd line center on a contending team? I don't believe so.
Now, if Frost is a bust then I'd look foolish. But if Nuge is a 45-55 point guy making 6 mill and you have Patrick who will eventually take that role, it may be a contract you'll be looking to get off your hands soon. I just think that there would be better options with the package your proposing to give up than Nuge.
The Leafs would be happy to give you Kadri for that package if you'd be willing to give it up. Better FO% and Corsi stats with more dzone starts than nuge at 4.5mill. Just comparing the two.</div></div>
jwtemple3 made this AGM, not me.
I was just commenting that Frost for Nuge was not necessarily a clear cut overpayment on PHI's side.
Is PHI considered a contender?
By looking at their depth charts, Nuge would easily slot in 2C for them. That would mean more TOI, which would boost his production.
Although your point is fair, if Nuge is a 3C, $6M AAV is an overpayment. But Nuge is not a 3C. If he isn't in his primary role of Centre, he plays on the wings (in other words, always lays top 6 minutes. Also, since he does always play top 6 minutes, he is matched up with other teams elite lines. No offense, but you cannot compare Kadri and Nuge as they are apples and oranges. In todays NHL, the Centre position is pivotal, and MUST be fast. If your 1C + 2C don't have speed, they are relegated to 3C and 4C. Nuge brings that. Kadri does not.
Nuge has always had sub par linemates as well. Can't only look at the +/- and ppg's as they are very deceiving.
Trust me, you send Nuge to any "non-contender team", and he is their 2C and will produce and perform and measure up to expectations.

<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>GM_leafs81</b></div><div>Big fan of Frost though, Frost and a 1st for nuge seems steep.</div></div>
Really?
Nuge would instantly be PHI's 2C. Value for 2nd line Centre is very high. Teams have paid a hefty price in the last 3 years for fast, skilled centremen in their prime. Nuge JUST turned 26, has two years left at a good cap hit. Plays a very good 200 ft game. Very effective on special teams.
I really like Frost (i mean it, I REALLY like him), but common guys!!!!! Swapping a player that has no track level at the Pro's (hasn't even played a single game in the ahl, we have no idea if his game translates to the Pro's) with a 1st round pick (albeit high) for a tried and true 2C on a fair contract with term and a 2nd is NOTHING CLOSE to an over payment.
If anything, historical trades in the last 3 years for 2C's dictate more has to come from PHI.

Cap Space and Trades
As mentioned above. Vegas has to rid themselves of like 10M of cap space to sign their UFA's/RFA's. There si no chance they go for this. That being said, Russel could easily be traded for minor pieces to numerous teams that may need to get closer to the cap floor (Ott).
I don't mind the Lucic/Kovy swap. But I highly doubt LA goes for it. I doubt Kovy would waive for Edmonton BUT... if her does...it would be sweet. Kovy may have a higher cap hit but has 2 less years on his contract and his NMC expires at the end of next season. Which means he does NOT need to be protected during the Seattle Expansion draft (which Lucic does). Kovy's last year also does't have any signing bonuses therefore can be bought out. Kovy could bring more skill and realistically play top 6 minutes... even though he is dreadfully slow. He was barely playing 3rd line minutes in LA, therefore he may be open to waiving his NMC to come to Edmonton if it gets him top six minutes. His start was very rocky in LA and who knows, would may be open to a "fresh start". That being said, the fact of the matter is, it all depends on LA and sweetening the pot enough to convince them the terrible Lucic contract is worth taking over. Maybe a 2nd round pick instead of a their would do it. Or else a D prospect.
