Getting rid of the Campbell contract and clearing cap space
I've had this trade in my head for a while for the Habs and Edm
Edm: Primeau
for
Campbell
1st 2024
2nd cond 2025(If Edm makes conference finals in the next 2 years, then the pick becomes 1st)

NYR aren't going to move Kakko unless the move helps them NOW. MTL doesn't have (or I should really say won't want to) give up the assets NYR would want to get him. Draft picks really don't do much as the player won't be able to help NYR for a few years. Most likely it would have the be a 3 way trade where MTL gives up assets to a team that has what NYR wants and gets Kakko in return, so unlikely.
For an in season trade, it would have to be one of Newhook, Slaf, Dach, Caufield, Suzuki coming back (which MTL obviously declines). For an offseason trade, Beck+mid pick could be a possibility depending on the health of Chytil.

Personally I'd be happy with that. I don't think Laine was ever a fit here and I think cutting ties on that big deal and moving on, with 2 mil retained and adding Beck would be a smart move.
Goes without saying though that a Laine trade isn't happening anytime soon with him entering the player assistance program. Would be pretty surprised at it happening over the summer either considering that. On the hockey side of things though, I'd take that as a CBJ fan.

Youd give up a top 7 pick for him when everyone in the top 7 has a higher ceiling than him? Hes a high end 2nd line C at best. Barron and a WPG 1st should be the max value for him. And even then, hes not worth it. Hes not the type of player that wins. He'll be average for 20 games, score a sick goal then go back to being average</div></div>
Caufield is Zegras's Best Friend is why
Personally im good, i'd rather Suzuki's best friend Durzi as he's much cheaper
Both are PP Players who elevate our top guys play but are both defensively questionable.

MTL fans, please tell your friends. Small pieces won’t buy Z. Here are the base pieces needed to talk trade for Z. And note, if this isn’t of interest, that’s okay!! We do not want to trade him
Option 1: Reinbacher
Option 2: Slafkovsky
Option 3: MTL ‘24 1st + Beck/Mesar/Roy tier
All 3 may need some tinkering with other smaller pieces one way or the other, but if the trade doesn’t look like any of those three, we will very happily continue buying Zegras threads in ANA

<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>Wreckless</b></div><div>All fair points. What I meant was giving bigger roles to younger players. Point taken in overall age of the team, however. My point is if it were me, I’d unload Elvis, Jenner, etc.
We keep Matheson because he has a well defined role, and we already have 4-5 rookie D playing every night outside of him and Savard.</div></div>
Fully agree there, that's on FO and management though to give the younger players those roles, which this FO has historically been <em>very </em>hard-nosed on. They won't even give our internal options that leash, so it would be weird to see them trade for more options.
I think Jenner has that very defined role for us as well, he's playing top-6 C when the rest of the center core is under 24 (aside from Kuraly). I'd also unload Elvis (if there's a buyer without retention), Provorov, and Peeke. And fwiw, I'd also unload Jenner; his value will never be higher, the market is perfect for top-6 centers on cheap deals with term, and he wouldn't play much more than a 3C/4C role during our contention window in a few years. But the FO has been explicit on him not being available, so it would take their firing first for him to be moved.

<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>Wreckless</b></div><div>What are your biggest areas of need?</div></div>
Number 1 imo is a top pair RD (Obviously Jenner isn't bringing a return that would definitely fill that, but a young RD prospect with upside would probably be something they'd look for)
Jiricek is the only guy in the org currently that could be that for them. While I'm very confident in him as a prospect and think the recent issues with him will easily smooth over with staff changes in the offseason, putting all their eggs in that basket with absolutely no alternative would be unwise.
2nd is probably goalie.
The future with Elvis is unknown, Tarasov looks like he's not long for the NHL once the FO who loves him is gone. Jet Greaves has shown some really good things, but is still a big unknown for the NHL long term. Idk, goalie prospects are weird, you don't see them traded as much, and I doubt Montreal would have a guy that's both good and they'd be willing to move. That's probably need no. 2 tho.
Those are the 2 that stick out. Middle 6 C (ideally 2C upside) is maybe something else they'd look for, especially with Jenner moving out. It's not a NEED like it was a while back, but adding more there to have more options Down the line is never bad.

"Jarmo surrounds Laine with his countrymen. I don’t think he gives up on him. But the team needs to start the rebuild."
<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>Wreckless</b></div><div>Rebuild. Get younger. That’s 3 young assets (including the pick).</div></div>
We're already the <a href="https://leftwinglock.com/teams/biometrics/" rel="nofollow noreferrer noopener" target="_blank">3rd-youngest team in the league</a>, with an average age of just 0.1 years older than Montreal. Saying we need to "start the rebuild" is like saying MTL needs to sell Matheson to "start the rebuild". It's well underway already, and we're on the way out.
We also need NHL vets to show our literal teenagers the ropes. The oldest player on the roster is Gudbranson (32), and half our regular forwards are U25. Arguably, the team's youth is the biggest problem (aside from the FO).
The surplus of this team is youth, middle-6 forwards, and LD. No reason to add more of that, especially at the expense of our captain and one of the few leaders in an already very young room. If we move Boone, it's either for a legit 2RD long term, a couple of high draft picks (that we likely deal for additional NHL help), or a center prospect with top-6 potential. If he's moved, it's to a contender that's looking for a 2C and is willing to pay out the a** to get it, a la Lindholm and Monahan.

Mark my words about Ylonen. And my question is what pick would it take on top of that?
Boone Jenner isn’t getting any young, and Kirby Dach got traded for a 1st and a 3rd, and Newhook for the 31st and 37th overall picks.
My guess is Winnipeg’s 1st should be more than enough with the rest of that package.</div></div>
Idk anything a out Ylonen, so I can't speak on that, but Columbus is more than set at LD for the future. Can't imagine they'd move out Boone if that's the highlight, even of you want to say he's for sure a top 4 d now. For Columbus to have any chance of moving him, it'd take both a big overpay and the returning assets would need to fill needs, not areas of surpluss.

Yeah that's fair but when you look at the game-by-game data for PK since the end of November with the exceptions of a few stinkers (at EDM, vs NYI x2) he's given the Hurricanes a chance to win every single night which is all we really ask of our goalies. I would still love Allen as a backup option assuming we can work out how to utilize him next year

I think NJD tries to take advantage of the crunch here if it’s us like we did for Siegenthaler.
With Barron, Xhekaj, Struble, Matheson, Kovacevic, Guhle, Savard. That already makes 7 other dmen.
Then if Mailloux/Hutson/Reinbacher are ready that’s 3 more.
I don’t believe Montreal wants to have less than 2 vet dman on the roster so I expect at least 2 of the vets to stay. Dont wanna run out all rookies.
The current system of keeping Barron down in the minors doesn’t seem like a long term solution.
I’d say something has to give and I’d expect to be the LD without waiver exemption status

Ahhhh, but that’s hard. Easier to dump on why you think the thoughts of others are wrong. When this entire site is consistently all an exercise in low probability.</div></div>
So many dont give answers to your arguments but attack the posters instead of the argument with platitudes.
Simply see any of the <a href="https://www.capfriendly.com/forums/thread/792833?post_id=4627745">Monahan madness</a> where some here claim that it's very unlikely that Monahan does get a 1st because of 'reasons' yet its mostly piggy bagging tribalism and lets all point and laugh because we disagree together more than someone with the idea that we don't like..
BUT put through an actual hypothesis with the same stats/metrics/contract situation/position/age like Pageau and Copp compared to Monahan and its deemed the exception because you are trying too hard to justify a position you are defending.
You cant win if posters wont accept 1+1=2 but instead they rather think 1+1 could equal dog.

They’re all from the same draft class. Dach was taken 3rd over all and will probably end up the best of the bunch long term. Downside of Zegras is that now he’s over paid, and he’s only on a short term deal.</div></div>
And he's also nitpicking.
<a href="/users/Jah1722" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">@Jah1722</a>
Zegras has 7 points this season in 20games. A 30 point pace which is half of Dach's pace last season. See how I can nitpick the stats in my favour and ignore all context.
Once expectations grew with a bigger contract. Bad team effect much like Max Domi and AA on Chicago, someone has to score the goals on a bad team.
That explains Zegras production as a rookie to now.

Because perception matters. Allen as a Cup winner and a guy that literally destroyed the Wild season on his own is far more impressive than flaking out game 1 in a playoff series. Vanecek has proven little. Pedigree matters. Calling Vanecek the same is truly biased.
