<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>Subbanator7667</b></div><div>I think they do. The whole theory you can win without elite defence is only proven by a team that has a ridiculously good offence. By that I mean a generational offence, Crosby and Malkin are two of possibly the greatest 50 players to ever play this game, possibly even matching Mario and Jagr.

Suggesting that the leafs can achieve similar possibilities off of Mathews, Nylander and Marner I think is unjustified. Eventually I think they trade high on on of them like Columbus did/ what Carolina is waiting to do and get an elite player in a place of weakened in exchange, in this case for a defenceman</div></div>

Morgan Rielly is playing like a top pairing guy, Dermott look like a shoe in for a top 4 guy, Gardiner is a #2/#3 etc. The Leafs don't actually have a bad defense. They are a young team who will grow and play better defensive hockey as they spend more time in the league.

Going with the Pens example, I agree the leafs don't have as potent or experienced offensive core as the Pens but the leafs do have a far better defensive core than the one the Pens won the cup with last year (Letang was injuried).

The Leafs are not like the oilers who had no good defenders and so made stupid trades to aquire them. The Leafs have good young defenders and some good defender prospects. They are almost top 5 in the league, why would they making major shakeup trades? If the Leafs were struggling and missing a playoff spot i may consider trading Marner or Willy but they aren't.
