You want the Leafs to trade a 1st, Brown and Sparks for Simmonds, another winger??? That makes less than 0 sense for the Leafs. If they are trading their 1st round pick it will not be for a winger... they have NHL quality wingers playing for the Marlies. Not a position of need at all

TML after internal signings
What happens when Marner gets a 5-6 million dollar raise and Matthews gets a 9+ million dollar raise next year and the Leafs have to replace a bunch more roster spots if they let their UFAs walk? Or what about Kap, Levio and the other RFAs that would need contracts.
Then there is overage and performance bonuses.
Ya the Leafs can't fit JT and Carlson. I doubt they could even add JT for 12 million and not have to blow the team up

I just got hired... Trades with Leafs, Kings, Habs, and Oilers
Only reason Leafs say no to that trade is it doesn't take into consideration the Leafs cap structure at all. Those 3 players will be good cheap depth options right when the Leafs need it and the Leafs can't afford Spugeron/Zucker with the Matthews and Marner contracts on the horizon

Zaitsev played really well on the top pairing his first NHL season but looked worse after his injury this year. Selling him off like some cap dump makes no sense.
He is low on confidence but playing better this playoff series. He will go back to being a 2nd pairing defender next year I reckon and his contract will be more than fair if he does.

My lines would be:
Hyman-Matthews-Marleau
Leivo-Nylander-Marner
JVR-Bozak-brown
Johnsson-Plek-Kap
Boston is chasing the Bergeron-Matthews match up so try to put some good defensive players with him and limit goals at even strength. Rely on scoring from the bottom 9.
Leivo adds a big body net presence to the 2nd line.

<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>Juice</b></div><div>From your list...maybe an Ekblad given his age and that he's signed long term. Parayko is another name that lines up with being a young, RD on a long-term deal. A guy like Burns would be awesome but, at 33, the Leafs wouldn't be trading away a guy like Marner for. Picks and prospects for vets...young stud for young stud. That being said, I imagine the Leafs would part with Nylander before Marner.</div></div>
Wouldn't trade Marner for Ekblad considering Ekblads contract, concussion history at such a young age and his less than stellar play the last few years.
Parayko has yet to play on the top pairing and plays behind one of the better defenders in the league in Pietrangelo as well as a strong defensive team in general. Would want to see if Parayko could deal with the hardest matchups before I would trade someone like Marner for him.

Making space for Matthews
<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>jayjenkins</b></div><div>That's a valid point about Marner's production but TOR needs a legit #1 D to be a real contender and with ARI rebuilding I feel it's legit. Yes Marner is going to be great but what if the Leafs win or get to the cup this year because they finally have a #1 D that could win the Norris? Also, to your point about resigning the players, in reality it may be just half of them that get resigned but without those bottom 6 players, there's no chance the Leafs go far so I assumed they resign for the sake of the potential run</div></div>
Leafs have a number 1D who has been better than OEL this year and probably last year, Morgan Rielly.... by pretty much every metric Rielly has been far better than OEL this year. Rielly is also only like 23 so will only get better.
This myth about the need for a number 1D and therefore Toronto has to trade one of Marner or Nylander is bullshit.

From the ones I've seen he has pretty much a 50% split with offensive and defensive zone starts with a slight edge to defensive zone. I disagree with the stats pointing to him not being sheltered against top 6 opponents as the stats i have seen point to 3rd pairing matchups and the eye test from watching every leaf game also backs that up.
3rd pairings sometimes see the other opponents top 6 but that is rare and usually when the other team gets the last change or a good on ice change to exploit the 3rd pairing.

<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>Oiler3535</b></div><div>Zaitzev sucks though. And no I don’t think Dermott is amazing, but he’s very good. He does make the occasional mistake but so does every D in the league. Gardiner has pretty blatant giveaways and so does Reilly. All players do. <strong>That’s why you look at stats. And the stats show he plays against all lines </strong>and when playing with Polak he drives possession (not so much when stuck with Carrick).</div></div>
Zaitsev is having a tough year but he is playing his second year on North American ice after a good rookie season playing well on the top pairing. He has the tools but is low on confidence, I wouldn't count him out yet.
Can you show me where you got this stat from? As I'm not saying Dermott can't be a top pairing eventually but he is a rookie and putting him right onto the top pairing next year after only ever playing on the 3rd pairing wouldn't be a good thing for his development I think.
Gardiner and Rielly play against much harder matchups and better players than Dermott so comparing their possession stats doesn't really paint the whole picture. I'm not denying Dermott is absolutely dominating the third pairing matchups/QoC and I would like to see him getting 2nd pairing, #4D usage with some powerplay time next year. Build up his confidence and ease him in.

None of his advanced stats have been adjusted by his quality of competition which is that of an average 3rd pairing defender. When ive seen him make mistakes it is usually when the other team catches his pairing out against a top 6 line. He is not ready for the top pairing at all.
The Rielly-Hainsey pairing is without a doubt the leafs top pairing. Babcock always tries to get them out against the teams best offensive players while Gardiner's paring has the most ice time it is against a slightly worse QoC.
Edit: Zaitsev is a right handed defender too. Not just Polak/Carrick

People need to chill out with the Dermott over rating.... I have been a big fan of him since he was drafted and went on to dominate the AHL.
However he is playing sheltered minutes on the 3rd pairing right now, the fact people think he could just step right onto the top pairing is baffling to me. Espcially when you have him displacing Morgan Rielly who has been excellent this year playing on the top pairing...
Some food for thought, Rielly is only born 2 years before Dermott.
