Ducks Side of a Marner Trade
<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>GiggywithGibby</b></div><div>He's one of yours, and you're not going to land anything substantial past the cap space savings in a Marner deal after his horrid playoff performance, full NMC, and new contract demands.</div></div>
True. Near 100pt players probably won’t land you much, an AHL player, a bottom pair Dman and the 28th pick in the draft. Leafs should be greatful for this tremendous offer

Canes need a star
Not enough. Necas's highest point total is 71 points. Marner almost achieved that in his rookie season. Canes will have to add multiple prospects and a 1st.

2 sides of a Marner trade
<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>WN88</b></div><div>I guess that's reasonable under the assumption that you're taking a risk. Perhaps this is a bit far-fetched, but I think, hypothetically, any team Marner would waive for would also likely be a team he'd extend with. I can't really speak on the trade rumours. All I can say is it's incredibly sad to see just how many "fans" and people in the media want to see the destruction of a team.
I've watched just about every game of the Matthews/Nylander/Marner era. I can assure you that Marner would be a 100-point player away from Auston Matthews. I mean, don't get me wrong. I'm not saying you could put him with borderline fourth-liners, and he'd still reach that mark. But I'm certain that you could expect at least 90-100 points if you slid him into just about any team's top-6.</div></div>
As a fan of the team that signed Johnny Gaudreau: I'm skeptical. Without support, it's too easy for NHL defenses to swarm one player, especially if they're undersized and primarily a playmaker.
Marner is an incredibly valuable player, and Minnesota probably gives you the best potential package just because they're looking for another elite talent to go alongside Boldy/Kaprizov. But the return really comes down to three things:
1) If the Leafs are going to make changes to the core four, he's the one. Matthews and Nylander aren't going anywhere, and Tavares is a $6M player making $11M; you're likely giving him away if you want to get rid of the whole contract. The Leafs wanting to move Marner is the worst kept secret in hockey, so teams are looking to take advantage of that.
2) If you do move Mitch, not many teams can take an $11M cap hit, so you're either retaining or limiting the number of suiters, which would decrease a potential return.
3) Mitch has a full NMC. He's not going to waive that and just say "send me wherever you get the best package", he's going to use that to pick his spot and force Toronto to trade him to one of a select few locations (like when Kaberle was traded, the list was: Boston...and that's it).
If I'm honest, I think Minnesota has to make that pick this year's 1st (13 OA) if they're going to have Toronto retain even ~$3M, but if you get Rossi, Gustavsson, and 13OA...take that and run. A starting-caliber goalie that's only 25 and locked up to a reasonable deal, a potential 2C of the future (which Toronto desperately needs if Tavares regresses), and 13OA? Use the pick, or the extra ~$6.5M in cap space and free agency, to fix the D.

<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>WN88</b></div><div>But just for fun, would you swap Spurge w/ Brodin if we added McCabe? He’s probably our best d-man and only makes 2 million dollars this upcoming season. A fan-favourite, plays with A TON of bite/physicality, too. Strikes me as someone that would be easy to extend at a reasonable cap hit as well.</div></div>
I love Brodin like you love Marner, for me it's a no but for most of the world it is probably a yes.

So would you be upset with that return? Sounds pretty good to me.

Ferlands career ended a season and a half after the trade and fox wasn't going to sign. Hanifan and Lindholm were a huge part of the team for 6 years. And the Tkachuk trade was a haul, unfortunately huberdeau fell off a cliff after arriving.

I get the idea, for sure. but despite the position he plays, Liljegren doesn’t really fill the actual need for the Sens. if they’re gonna move that Boston pick for depth like this, (which I don’t think they will, and wouldn’t want them to), I have to imagine it’ll be veterans with room left to play.

I think Toronto definitely says no to that deal with STL, I don't think Parayko is a top pair D-man anymore. More like a 3-4. Definitely not worth 3 1sts, Lily and Robertson. This certainly makes for a strong blue line though!

Hard to say what his actual contract will look like, but I'm also pretty certain Knies will command more money. Heck, I'd give him more than that if he signed today.</div></div>
Yeah... I don't love what I came up with for Tavares.
I didn't do a deep dive in comparables for Knies. A bit of a c. 2018 bridge deal to that one

Waiting for Tavares to Leave
<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>LuckyMoneyPuck</b></div><div>if and that's a big if, he decides to leave PIT he will have plenty of teams wanting him, he's getting a 7 year deal</div></div>
Sure, plenty of teams will want him but doesn't mean he's going to be the top UFA D or the only option so it's not a guarantee. Other guys who may be available include the likes of Shea Theodore, Provorov, Gavrikov, and Orlov. So, it entirely depends on who else is available and who is better. At the end of the day though, the final $ figure of the contract matters more than merely getting max term but the team/location is also an important factor which could determine which of 3 offers for example that he selects: 6.5Mx5 vs 6Mx6 vs 5.5Mx7.

Marner to Utah
<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>Mikael_Smith</b></div><div>Weak season where he put up 101 point pace?</div></div>
The sheep will follow the herd. Marner 47points Matthews-44points Nylander-41points in 50playoff games before this season. Marner weighs 30-50 pounds less than Matthews, JT, Nylander and Rielly. You don't hear anything about their lack of physical play. Not one of those 4 make a big hit ever. Matthews has been his most physical this playoffs but now he's hurt. Rielly is the worse #1 d-man in the playoffs but you don't hear anything about his in ability to clear the front of the net, make a check like McCabe or Benoit, play the PK and has the worse point shot of any #1 d-man in the league.

Marner
<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>Celtics21</b></div><div>What are Marner’s trade protections?</div></div>
Matthew Tkachuk.
Florida had to pay him big money with a 1 year of term. Marner will have to be paid big money with a year of term. Same age range, same point totals. They couldn't be closer except, of course, the playoff pedigree but Tkachuk wasnt proven in the playoffs then (15pts in 23 g) as he was coming off a loss to the Oilers, I think the lack of success has more to do with the Leafs than Marner just like it was with the Flames rather than Tkachuk. Marner actually has a better PPG in the playoffs than Tkachuk at the time (47PTs in 50G)
Mitch can play in the dirty areas that is how he gets his pts in the regular season. This has a lot to do with coaching and pressure in Toronto.
Marner would be slightly less valuable.
Whomever gets Marner will be getting a star player in the league. TOP5 RW

<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>WN88</b></div><div>Only thing about this trade is that we already have Minten and Holmberg who, although not as good (yet), could serve the same role as Roy would, while at a much lower cap hit. The progress Holmberg has made this season has given me hope that he can be a full-time reliable, all-situations 3C for us next year. I mean, he’s pretty much already playing that role for us in right now, and he certainly hasn’t looked out of place.</div></div>
The issue with Minten is that he’s not NHL ready within Toronto’s cup window - which is now. Toronto’s lack of centre depth has haunted them for years and if they wanna win during the Matthews/Marner/Nylander era then they need help now while those guys are in their primes. Worst case let’s say Minten surprises everyone and makes the team outta cap next season, then plah him at 3C and insert Roy at 2C because it should be time for Tavares to move to the wing anyways.
Maybe we have different opinions on Holmberg, because personally I don’t see him as anything more than a 4th liner. The effort is there but I don’t see the skill for a higher role. I don’t see him as a centre either - he needs to drastically improve his faceoffs for the role so outside of a decent depth player, I don’t see much value in him and I think he’s replaceable and needs to be upgraded

That said to improve the D got a feeling Bertuzzi's gone in FA anyways</div></div>
5 games besides matthews isnt really impressive, and he's still an absolute black hole defensively. I pay 1/4 more for Bertuzzi every day of the week, especially since he actually contributes to team defence and fits beside both Tavares and Matthews. You get basically the same cap space if you just dont sign edmundson to play 7th D and you still come out ahead on both goals for and against

Absolutely no benefit to exchange one top-4 UFA defenseman for another. In fact, when Mikey Anderson comes off the IR list, I'd rather have Matt Roy paired with Vladi Gavrikov and Anderson paired with Drew Doughty than Anderson paired with Drew Doughty and Hanifin paired with Brandt Clarke or Jordan Spence.
