<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>Tjm220</b></div><div>With the current salary cap situation, any defenseman making $6 million is making number one pairing money. If the cap should go up enough you can make the case that $6.5 million is a high end second pairing defender. But at the current rate I would almost argue any defender making over $5 million is making number one pairing money.</div></div>

That’s fair. But you’re paying on the front end as that number will gradually increase with the cap looking to be increasing.

Parayko is paid to be a first pairing guy. He’s asked to be a bonafide number 1 who plays heavy shutdown with a lesser partner (the Pietrangelo treatment). He’s not prime Pietrangelo. He has a few holes in his game that don’t allow him to be Pietrangelo. Mainly his weakness of his first pass. But he’s is extremely elite at certain aspects as well.

The issue the Blues have on the defensive contracts is they have a group of guys they’re paying that don’t fit roles they need to to play to their strengths. Parayko is a bit of an outlier as he’s just been getting hammered to shelter everyone else.

Krug, Parayko, Faulk, Lindholm and Fowler occupy the 29th-34th highest paid defenseman on an annual basis. So in an essence yes they are being paid to be number ones. But they’re paid to be the worst number ones in the NHL.

All 3 on their own aren’t really bad contracts. Krugs isn’t great, but he’s being paid to generate offense and he’s done so over his career at a higher clip than Morgan Reilly for one who isn’t really looked at in as bad of a light.
