Gotta think Blues take that if they can find a suitable Parayko replacement.

The blues take half of that if it means getting rid of his horrendous contract without retaining any of it. Nobody is eating that contract without retention, especially not Buffalo. Unless the NHL starts handing out freebie compliance buy outs again.

For the Blues it’s less about his value and more that they actually need him right now.

He doesn't need to be bought out lmao.

He also doesn't need to be dumped.

He's far and away our best defenseman. The only close second is Faulk who has been heavily sheltered mainly due to us having Parayko who can play an extreme amount of heavy minutes.

Look at your stats though and make your judgements, in the end it's all meaningless and for fun.

If his contract weren’t seven years long when he is already on the wrong side of 30 you’d get closer to fair value. He’s not a top pairing defenseman anymore, but he still gets paid like it for the next seven years. Buffalo already has three defensemen who will be making money in the same neighborhood. The decline happens quickly, especially with bigger, physical defensemen like him. In three years he could be barely an NHL calibre player, but they would still be stuck with him for another four.

I don’t like any of this. Campbell was terrible and has 4x5 left on his deal. Also he had one good year with Toronto so he’s about as proven as Carter Hutton was lol. We might as well keep Comrie bc at least he’s cheap. Parayko is good but that deal isn’t what I’d be looking for in a trade scenario because it takes him well into his 30s. I’d be looking for a 24-25-26 year old RHD on a team that is either rebuilding or looking to rebuild

He’s absolutely a top pairing defenseman. He’s not an all situations number one like we had hoped he’d become. He’s playing shutdown minutes for 70% of the time he’s on the ice with Nick Leddy in the same role. It’s not going to go well in a setup like that. 6.5m isn’t number 1 money. The contract will look rough in 5 years sure. But there’s still 4+ good years on him.

Not sure if he’s right for Buffalo or not. But they need to add some sort of veteran presence that can keep pushing that culture forwards. 6.5 on Parayko alone isn’t bad. 6.5 on Faulk, Krug and Parayko with 4 on Leddy is bad because neither Leddy nor Krug can play the type of minutes that the blues for some reason insist on deploying Parayko in.

Hopefully a new coach on the bench next season for the defenseman will give a more balanced usage to the whole groups deployment instead of trying to shelter everyone but Parayko.

A good top pair LD would probably push all of the pieces on our defense into a place that makes it solid. Only problem is it’s going to be hard to that with little cap space.

With the current salary cap situation, any defenseman making $6 million is making number one pairing money. If the cap should go up enough you can make the case that $6.5 million is a high end second pairing defender. But at the current rate I would almost argue any defender making over $5 million is making number one pairing money.

That’s fair. But you’re paying on the front end as that number will gradually increase with the cap looking to be increasing.

Parayko is paid to be a first pairing guy. He’s asked to be a bonafide number 1 who plays heavy shutdown with a lesser partner (the Pietrangelo treatment). He’s not prime Pietrangelo. He has a few holes in his game that don’t allow him to be Pietrangelo. Mainly his weakness of his first pass. But he’s is extremely elite at certain aspects as well.

The issue the Blues have on the defensive contracts is they have a group of guys they’re paying that don’t fit roles they need to to play to their strengths. Parayko is a bit of an outlier as he’s just been getting hammered to shelter everyone else.

Krug, Parayko, Faulk, Lindholm and Fowler occupy the 29th-34th highest paid defenseman on an annual basis. So in an essence yes they are being paid to be number ones. But they’re paid to be the worst number ones in the NHL.

All 3 on their own aren’t really bad contracts. Krugs isn’t great, but he’s being paid to generate offense and he’s done so over his career at a higher clip than Morgan Reilly for one who isn’t really looked at in as bad of a light.
