Signed him to a 3 year contract. 3 X 4M. 20 percent of 4M is only 800,000 which is most definitely doable for Anaheim and they’re getting an offensive minded young right shot d man and a few late draft picks.

<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>svfsdv</b></div><div>Ya. I dont see any team retaining on a brand new contract. Locking in a retention spot for 3 years is a big ask. Thats also a very heavy price TO would probably not want to pay to get it done either.</div></div>
You also have to remember that 20% of 4,000,000 is only 800,000, I feel like the market for players that the leafs need to fill in the gaps are too great this year to let it pass. Also, our window to win is closing. Who knows when the leafs would see another player like Austin Matthews and Nylander

When did the slavin extension get done? Source? Just because they are said to have an “agreement” it doesn’t mean anything until own goes to paper. A month ago frank seravelli said there’s about a 5% chance that Marner is back on the leafs and now it looks like he’s staying. Things change quick. So if you’re losing kuzy and geuntzal wouldn’t it make sense to sign a young player that has real scoring potential that is only going to make 2M a year? Again, canes would be absolutely out of there mind if they didn’t make that trade. Guarantee Robertson goes there first season and scores 20-25 goals

When they lose someone to free agency/trade, they immediately go big game hunting for a suitable replacement and it usually works out. Think Marchessault, Toffoli, Ehlers, Buchneivich as replacement options for Gunetzel/Necas. Not another tiny winger which we have a million of.</div></div>
And how has that worked out for them? Canes need a good goalie in his prime. If I was the canes I’d be trying to trade for a goalie like saros

I think Lily makes atleast 2.25, so what are we saving 500k, plus losing a guy that knows the system and is locked up for another 4 years while the cap increases?</div></div>
10 picks is a lot, especially when it’s from the second to the third round. Vegas needs draft picks. Vegas just picked up hanafin whos on the third line and you guys need to the sign Theodore next year, or this season to an extension. Plus you need to re sign Stephenson and marsh. Anyway you can save money, if I was Vegas I’d do it. Also, liljegren is a solid 3rd pairing d man. He was a first round draft pick. So you’re essentially giving up a 3rd pairing guy for a third pairing guy who is younger and signed for less and you’re moving up a minimum of 10 draft spots. What don’t you understand about that? Would you rather lose Theodore or trade whitecloud and save some money

<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>JaredOfLondon</b></div><div>is is very much a crap return, a low end 3rd liner and a bunch of later picks and a 1st a year out is a terrible return for Marner. One of those picks could turn out to be the next liljegren and that's a way more likely outcome than the fantasy you have concocted.
The leafs are trying to win now, not rebuild. If you're so gung ho about moving him then you do it at the deadline when prices spike, not now where you make the team significantly worse for the whole season and back fill the cap space with garbage contracts that will haunt the team for years.
I dont care about changing your mind, you've clearly convinced yourself of some out right hilarious nonsense, like anyone who thinks Dakota Joshua is worth 4 million is beyond help</div></div>
Anybody that knows anything about hockey knows that prices don’t “spike” at the deadline. That’s just plain stupidity. Yeah and one of those players could turn out to be the best Mitch Marner. You’re saying they’re trying to win now but they haven’t made it past the second round in 20years. What makes you think runnnijg it back for the 9th year in a row will be any different? You use the salary cap that you get from marners contract and fill the holes of this team. Top pairing RHD, 2nd pairing RHD, 1A/B goalie, solid 3C. Dakota Joshua will be offered 4M by a team. Mark my words

<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>ChiHawk</b></div><div>Here's your problem; unless Toronto extends him first, all they can get in return is a rental price for Marner. MAYBE a playoff team would pay that price, there is no way a rebuilding team is giving up a mid first, a lottery pick next spring, a 2nd and a 3rd. That has literally never happened in the history of the NHL in the cap era.</div></div>
Riddle me this… Marner has said that he would waive his NMC to go to Chicago. Why in the world would Marner (who is a Toronto born player playing on the team he idolized growing up) waive his NMC to go to a team that has enough salary cap to pay for him?
Probably to re sign there and get a bag😂.
Everyone who says he’s “going to want 12M” is talking about a Toronto 12M… they’re taxes TO DEATH in Toronto. He probably makes about 8.5M a year on his current contract which is 10.9M. If Marner signs for 10.5M for term, like 5-6 years I can’t see how Chicago would lose a trade trading away guys that you don’t even know there potential yet.
Marner is a 100 point player if he’s healthy. He was also a lottery pick and broke records in JR. he’s only 27

<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>Hawksguy81</b></div><div>And Calgary and Florida were both legitimate playoff contenders when that trade was made. And Tkachuk wasn't on an expiring contract. He was signed already to a brand new 8 year extension. So your "comparison" really isn't a good one. If Brad can get Mitch to sign an 8 year extension for 10 or 11 million, then maybe the Hawks have some interest. But the Leafs still don't get that Chicago '25 1st.</div></div>
What does both of them being legit contenders have to do with anything? Marner makes Chicago a FAR better team than they are now. Who is bedard wingers? They’re garbage. Ever heard of a sign and trade? Yes he was on an expiring contract numb nuts.
Why wouldn’t Marner sign an extension for even 9M per year? Do you understand income tax in Ontario? They get taxed to death over here! Marner makes 10.9M salary right now. I garuntee after it’s all said and done he makes about 8.5M per year. In Chicago he’d be able to keep a lot more of the money he makes.
If Marner signs for 9M for like 6 years Chicago better be giving up 2 firsts. You’re really not in tune with hockey are ya bud? When Calgary made that trade they got back essentially the same amount of points Tkachuk put up plus a solid second pairing defenseman and a depth player plus a conditional 4th round pick. In this trade all the leafs are getting back is a bottom 6 player. The only things that make this trade good for both sides is the draft picks.

I dont care if Marner only wants to go to chicago, this return sucks, if chicago wants him they can give up something worth getting. Delusional is what people like you have talked themselves into where they think this is better than keeping the elite 2 way 1st liner</div></div>
That’s not a crap return?? That’s actually a really good return. It’s obvious that what the leafs have right now doesn’t work. Marner is the only trade that you can get something good for. One of those 1st rounders could turn out to be the next Mitch Marner you never know. You use that cap space to go out and change the teams identity like I did. Leave to do the unsexy things longer that it takes to win in the playoffs. What do you expect to do? You let him rid out his contract this year and he walks at free agency and we lose him for nothing? That would be the most delusional thing to do. Nothing you can say to change my mind

<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>Hawksguy81</b></div><div>The Hawks '25 1st included in that deal makes it a "no thanks" from the Hawks. Marner could score his 100 points next season and it still doesn't make the Hawks a playoff team. If you think Marner is worth two 1st's (one a likely top 5 pick), a 2nd and a 3rd that's great. But the Hawks won't be the team paying that.</div></div>
Let’s think back to the last 100 point player who was on an expiring contract who got traded. Matthew Tkachuk. What did he rerun in the trade? Jonathan huberdeau ( a 100 point player as well at the time) Mackenzie weager ( the panthers 2nd best defenseman at time of the trade) and Cole Schwindt who’s a 3rd round pick.
These drafts picks, you don’t even know there potential yet, everyone knows how great Marner is. Chicago also still has a first in both 2024 and 2025 even after the trade. Delusion
