Mostly Going off Rumours so DAL and NYI Fans Please Dont Whine About the Value
<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>kdawg32086</b></div><div>Everyone is aware that Dallas has expressed interest in Petry, but are there any links that say what Dallas is actually offering for Petry? I think that is really what seems to be the point of contention between Montreal and Dallas fans. Most Montreal fan proposals suggest that the Stars are giving up a first round pick or a top prospect for Petry and most Dallas fans (and fans of pretty much any team other than Montreal to be fair) say it's way too much.
Is there a link somewhere from a reputable source saying that Dallas has actually offered its first round pick or a top prospect like Bourque or Harley for Petry?</div></div>
I'm a habs fan who think highly of Petry (no, he did not "slow down"), but no way is he worth a top 20 pick, Johnston, Bourque or Harley.
Considering Habs won't retain on him, his value is a 2nd, A/B+ prospect and a small contract coming the other way. (A bit less than Risto's return who was ridiculous)
My call is a 2024 2nd, Dellandrea and Khudobin

It just makes no sense for Dallas to trade their only real dman prospect for a declining dman. Whether its Burns or Petry. Dallas isn’t a contender so why step backward by getting older.</div></div>

both of them would be moronic for Dallas to go after

Habs prediction for 2022-2023 season
Dallas declines if you have a 1st Round pick involved OR any of the following players: Johnston, Stankoven, or Bourque
The Stars aren’t in a dire cap situation so the need for them to move Khudobin’s contract simply isn’t there. Best you’re going to get from Dallas is something along the lines of:
2nd Round Pick
Connor Roulette/Ty Dellandrea/Artem Grushnikov
for
Jeff Petry
Anything more than that and it’s simply not worth the risk for Dallas, not when they can go get a slightly worse option like Tyson Barrie for far cheaper & he’ll cost less against the cap.

Is this a fair trade
<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>Habsfan76</b></div><div>Dallas and Montreal are two teams at different stages. Although they haven’t said they want to go through a full rebuild, they’ve also traded away Weber Toffoli Chariot and Lehkonen. Hughes also said he wanted to trade Petry. All these signs show that they want to younger.
Dallas on the other hand haven’t shown any signs of retooling or rebuilding. With good young pieces already in the NHL and key veterans such as Pavelski Benn and Seguin (yes overpaid), they seem to want to continue to compete for a playoff spot and acquire talent that can be brought into the equation immediately.
This is a type of deal that can fill both teams need, where Montreal gets cap relief and futures, while Dallas gets a top 4 Dman where a 3 year deal isn’t as risky in comparison to the 7-8 year deals that get given out consistently (Eg. Lindholm for Boston).</div></div>
But it is risky when you're about to pay J-Rob and Oettinger...Say those two get around $12 mil (based on bridge $7 for J-Rob and $5 x term for Oettinger). That leaves approximately $7 mil in cap space. You add Petry, but subtract Dobie for 1 year ($3.2 mil, leaves you with approximately $3.8 mil in space).
Now you've got a roster of 18 players, $3.8 mil in cap space, and haven't actually improved the lineup. You also leave yourself in a situation where you've got a total of $20 mil in space for 2023-24, with only 11 players signed. Doesn't really lend itself well to an actual upgraded lineup.
Regarding Linholm though-He'll be 35 in the last year of his deal. You buy prime years knowing that the aging curve works the same way for 99% of players. Again, like I said above, there's always a chance that some dummy does something dumb, I just don't think that Dallas is as easy of a target as the consistent "Petry to Dallas" threads seem to think.

<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>Lancebmx</b></div><div>I think it would have to be Stankoven or Bourque, I think they are better than Dellandrea but not entirely sure. Considering those 3 will be nhl regulars in the next year or two, losing one wouldn't hurt as much. I would maybe look at swapping Doby for Faksa if it kept Stankoven.</div></div>
I wouldn’t trade one of our top prospects for a second pair D. Period. Even if you took Dobby and Faksa. I’m not sure I’d give up the two second round picks for him either. Stankoven won’t be NHL ready this year and he won’t be a center at the NHL level. If you’re looking for a 2C Bourque is the better fit and even then I’m not sure Hronek is good enough to consider that. Bourque isn’t a sure thing to be in the NHL this year either. I’d rather take a gamble on Nutivaara’s health and give him a one year deal and tell all these “Dallas needs somebody to replace Klinger so they should absolutely over pay for (insert mediocre defenseman)” people to go pound sand

Stars instantly decline, they aren’t trading Otter period. He was the main reason they stayed alive that long in these playoffs, plus trading him makes Wedgewood our starter, it sets-back the team 10 years.
And Colorado would be one of the last teams the Stars would trade one of their best players to.

Hey Dallas and RW fans
I won't lie, as a Stars fan I wouldn't even be the slightest bit interested in acquiring Petry unless both Suter and Faksa were going back the other way. So a trade would have to include those two but Montreal likely wouldn't do that.

RFA galore
<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>Campabee</b></div><div>And Lehkonen doesn't get a 1st +, and Chiarot doesn't get more than a 2nd and Kulak doesn't get more than a 3rd or 4th and blah, blah, blah, blah.... It's always the same noise when it comes to Habs players and fans. Go ask Avs fans if they are happy to have Lehky. Ask Oilers fans if they regret giving up a 2nd for Kulak. You can even ask Panthers fans if they regret giving up so much for Chiarot or if they want to resign him. For the most part those fanbases are happy to have gotten those players.</div></div>
Maybe I’m missing something here but this argument doesn’t make sense. You are using 3 examples and all of them are tremendously different than Petry.
Lehkonen is a pending RFA and 26 years old. He received a premium return. The consensus was that this was a high price tag, but with it for a solid player who will be under team control moving forward.
Kulak was a pending UFA and the return wasn’t much. Most people agreed with this trade at the time.
Chiarot was a massive overpay and Florida’s worst defenseman in the playoffs. At the time, everyone said it was a terrible trade. And now it looks much worse.
And now Petry is 34 and on a relatively high cap hit contract for the next 3 years. And this return is asking for Dallas’s top prospect and a 3rd.
I struggle to see the similarities between all 4 scenarios except that they have played hockey in Montreal.
