petry's value is just a tad low in that trade imo. i think add a mid-low pick coming to MTL and its good
though that trade only falls through if DAL loses klinger imo

Habs have a billion 4ths and 5ths so I don’t think it’d be a problem to throw an extra pick in

I’m not high on Petry but seems like it favors Dallas. Dobby is a cap dump whereas Petry is overpaid but still useful especially as a potential replacement to Dallas for Kling. If mtl retains on Petry or finds a third team they could get a good return imo

I'm torn with Petry's value

Kent Hughes said he won't give assets to another team to take Petry. So from that sentence, that means Petry has negative value. But after, he says if we get a decent offer for Jeff, he WILL trade him ... Then the insiders are saying 4 to 6 teams are trying to acquire Jeff Petry ... So wtf does that mean, teams would take him for 'free' but K. Hughes isn't ready to just gave him away ?

The way I see it is that Klingberg will probably get 7+ mil for a contract twice as long as Petrys. Taking Khudobin would make Petry in essence a 4mil Dman for next year and then 6.2 for the last 2. If the cap goes up in the following seasons I see Petrys contract not being that bad as a #2/3 Dman for Dallas compared to what the market is for RHD

Knowing Jim Nill, He's not surrendering the 18th pick unless Kent Hughes eats a little bit of Jeff Petry's salary.

I think Kent is saying that he won’t add in prospects for the trade BUT he would consider combining a pick with him to jump up to grab another 1st

This. I look at it two ways:
1) Always a chance that someone does something foolish like overpays for a 90 year old RD, but there's a decent chance that it's kinda like the Chiarot situation-in their hearts, most people knew some dummy was going to give up a 1st for him, we just all hoped it wasn't going to be our team.
2) If I was willing to sped $6.5 mil for 3 years of Petry, why wouldn't I just give Klingberg a bit more and at least get a few prime(ish) years out of him before he ultimately declines. Or, target another cheaper option.

I'd say it's 50/50 TBH. While Dallas dumping Dobie is good for them, Montreal also gets major cap relief here too.

Man, that's a ramble filled post on my end tears of joy

2023 1st I think Hughes will push with lottery protection. Klingberg isnt even talking to the Stars rn. That can always change at the last second but it looks like Dallas is on Petry hard and you have 5 other teams right now chasing

Just look at the available options by free agency and trade on the right side. There aint much if Klinger leaves. Barrie by trade? Dumba? Sign UFA Justin Schultz.

True, but at $7 (or $7.5) you're getting at least 2-3 prime years out of Klinger, instead of hoping for a bounce back season from a 35 year old. Dobie's buyout only costs $833 k this year ($1.25 in year 2 which isn't super...), but it at least gives some flexibility there.

Klinger at 8x7 or whatever insane deal he gets in free agency is 10x worse than Jeff at 6.25M x 3

Eumm Petry bounced back after MTL fired Ducharme. Petry had 5 goals 16 assists for 21 points in 30 games under MSL. I think 30 games is a good sample

Lots of talk about Marino potentially being moved. With Heiskanen, I don't think you necessarily have to be overly concerned about adding a offensive Dman at the end of the day. Not saying that they don't trade for Petry, just saying it certainly isn't a necessity. Heck, as a Ducks fan, I wouldn't be against a trade involving Shatty.

Ya if Klingberg does want to resign with Dallas I agree it’s probably their best option, but due to him not seeming to want to resign makes this deal seem like a viable option for Dallas because the free agency market is pretty crappy for RHD

I'm not sold on Klinger getting 7 x $8. He may, but worst case Dallas just let's him walk. Let him sniff it out and then see where you're at. When you look at comparable contracts, Parayko (not an offensive Dman, but more valuable) signed for $6.5, and Pietrangelo (who is >>>> Klinger) got $8.8. If someone is willing to give him $8, giver, but I'd be pretttttty surprised.

Tyson Barrie led NHL dmen in points 2 years ago, and got a total of $4.5 x 3. Points aren't everything.

Now, is Petry better than Barrie? Sure. Is he $2 mil better after a wild cat season as a 34 year old, I wouldn't bet the farm on a full season bounce back.

Petry is in a different league than Barrie. Barrie plays bottom pair and isn't trusted in the defensive zone. Every Oilers fan that watches him holds their breath when he's on the ice without the puck.

Albeit, Petry was absolutely dreadful this year under Ducharme and had some of the biggest brain farts you could imagine but that all kind of changed once his family situation became more staple with the wife and kids being stuck in the USA during covid and Quebec harsh regulations then MSL came into the equation. 20 points his final 29 games. All 4 previous seasons of 40 plus points for a top 4 RHD is quite the get for any team especially one that is trying to compete with little options to replace Klinger. According to Pens fans Marino wouldnt come cheap and he also had quite the down year. Everything is pointing to this being a fit in Dallas and the insiders are pushing it to the forefront.

I mean, if the "Petry's value rebounded!!!!" statement is based solely on offensive production over the last 30 games of the season, then it certainly is a comparison. Please note: I also followed it up with a "Petry > Barrie".

I would absolutely love to see Petry traded to Detroit. Those Wings fans all think he's terrible lol and they would be so shook that their demiGod Yzerman did something they didn't like. They'll probably be asking for the receipts and accuse Ken Holland of being behind the move.

He's very, very good even at 34 yrs old in a down season with every bad circumstance you could have imagined go against him. No one can replace what Jeff brings. Its a big reason why the team struggled because Petry struggled to start the year.

The team still struggled with Petry being "good". MSL finished with a .432 pts percentage, which would have been good enough for 27th/32.

@therealisticguy made some very valid points: "Kent Hughes said he won't give assets to another team to take Petry. So from that sentence, that means Petry has negative value." and "But after, he says if we get a decent offer for Jeff, he WILL trade him ... Then the insiders are saying 4 to 6 teams are trying to acquire Jeff Petry ... So wtf does that mean, teams would take him for 'free' but K. Hughes isn't ready to just gave him away ?" That's where I'm at. I haven't said he's "bad", what I've been saying is that I wouldn't be giving up any sort of decent assets to acquire a 35 year old dman who's under contract for 3 more years, and that while people are saying "Yeah, Dallas gets cap relief from Dobie!", Montreal is also getting MAJOR cap relief here as well.
