Penguins Re-tool Kessel Gone
<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>SP17</b></div><div>If you look at it again it's not the 4th overall they got from Ottawa it's their own which will be 16+ for a proven goal scorer with cup pedigree on a team that needs secondary scoring and will be drafting a top end talent at 4 that could possibly step into 2nd line center role immediately. Also, you say Montreal will laugh and that Pittsburgh isn't getting enough for Maata, contradicting yourself a bit there which one is it?</div></div>
My bad on the draft pick. I had a brain fart there. I also meant Pens saysno lol I’m not having a good mental day apparently. Kessel trade is good overall my bad with the mistakes

Pesce Larsson Kylington in Zaitsev Kapanen Kadri Brown out
Kapanen for Pesce might be a possibility but no way the Canes take Zaitsev's contract off the Leafs hands on top of that. Props for giving Marner a fair contract though.

I like the idea of Stone to the Bruins. Don't think he will get 10m though from any team. Might be an overpayment for a rental....just thinking there isn't time for sign and trade. But wouldn't worry about any comment that "Ottawa want more". Doesn't matter what they want. There are limited numbers of suitors and this might be there best offer by far.

Overhaul for Next Year WPG COL FLA TOR amp WPG
<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>LoganOllivier</b></div><div>Brown can be traded for futures, that is savings. Despite what everyone on here thinks, you won't have to pay to move Zaitsev, but you won't get much in return. You just can't play 22 minutes a night and have the success he's had without having talent. Its not like he's being paid like an allstar and should be in the press box. He's a good player but he's a little overpriced. However, a team that needs help on the blueline can get him for almost free and that is worth it to a lot of teams. There is about 5 million in savings already.
Perhaps they do trade Kapanen, and I wouldn't be against it but that would likely be for a defensive upgrade.
With all that in mind, if Kapanen wants to stay in TO, where he is happy, getting a chance to succeed and also lives with his self proclaimed best friend (Nylander) he could be convinced to take a 1 year low end deal to earn a good long term deal the year after. Why wouldn't he be interested in that?
The answer to all of those questions, for the legions of people on here who hate the leafs, is "Because that is beneficial to the Leafs, and I don't want that to be the case."</div></div>
Kapanen at a 4 million cap hit and Marner at a (conservative) 9.5 million cap hit leaves around 2 million in cap space for 7 roster spots. Moving Brown and Zaitsev for purely futures brings that number up to around 8.5 million for 9 roster spots, which is impossible to fill unless you are using league minimum contracts. That's a significant downgrade, especially on the blue line as Gardiner is gone and if you don't consider Zaitsev to be that bad.
Even if Kapanen wanted to take a conservative contract with a cap hit between 2-3 million, it wouldn't make a significant difference. The Leafs might be able to add a Hainsey level defenseman instead of a league minimum level one.
Trades will have to be made, whether it's moving out the bloated contracts or the players who need to be paid.
It's not about hating the Leafs (because I don't), it's about what's likely going to happen in the summer.

Overhaul for Next Year WPG COL FLA TOR amp WPG
<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>LoganOllivier</b></div><div>And they'd match the offer sheet.
You'll have to go into the range where a 1st + is the compensation before the Leafs move on from Kap. They could also offer him a 1 year deal and let him cash in even more after Marleau retires. Granlund would be a 4th liner in TO, he isn't a replacement.</div></div>
This is not a certainty by any means. The RFA compensation will adjust this offseason...so somewhere a little north of $4.1m on an offer sheet will still only cost a 2nd rounder.
Can the leafs match $4.5m? Better yet...are they willing to trade away other players in order to fit Kapanen at $4.5m?
<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>Canucks33</b></div><div>The Canucks (or any other team) could just offersheet Kapanen for around 4 million a year and the Leafs would only get the 2nd. This way the Leafs get a cheap replacement and the Canucks get a more favourable contract.</div></div>
It's not right for any team to say 'well we'll just offer sheet him then"....because the world of hockey doesn't work that way. More than half the teams would take Kapanen at $4.5m for the cost of a 2nd round pick....and because of that...I would like to think there would be better offers on the table for toronto than a 2nd + Granlund if they aren't able to sign Kapanen themselves

Duchene FA signing
<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>athrin</b></div><div>rofl, no way Duchene is going to that tire fire team, he will leave oTT for the same reason.</div></div>
Got any other insight of players personal preferences of where to play? I’ve been looking for an insider for a while. Where’s Karlsson and Stone going to sign?
Your comment is really dumb. At the end of the day, you have ZERO knowledge of where players actually want to play or sign, so why comment on it?
Obviously Edmonton has been a dumpster fire as an organization, but with Chiarelli gone and a new GM that will take full control on his way, a lot can change. Duchene and McDavid have played great together at past world championships. There’s a lot that goes into a players decision, don’t act like you know.

Point trade in offseason - input value
This is tough to say. I think in some ways Point is definitely helped by being on Tampa (See Namestnikov). I think you could turn him into Pesce and maybe Necas or possibly another prospect and a pick (more likely), but I don't think you get the first as well in that current trade scenario. Tough to say. There are many cautionary tales about basing value on big outliers. Tampa's cap dance will be interesting this offseason for sure.

Hamilton for Huberdeau Dzingel in Ferland out
I feel like you could get more out of Pittsburgh, but it's a good move regardless. FLA might want an extra piece coming back since Huberdeau has more term left on his deal than Hamilton. And I think that Dzingel trade makes great sense for both teams. Solid ideas!

Gudbry to TOR Canucks get Fabbro Goldobin to NYR
I’d say the most intriguing part here is the Fabbro trade! He’s exactly what canucks need and I think that Nashville jumps at that trade offer unless they are 100% certain he signs with them at the end of his year...

Gudbry to TOR Canucks get Fabbro Goldobin to NYR
<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>SP17</b></div><div>I wouldn't particularly want Gudbranson either but he apparently still has interest around the league and somewhat fits what the leafs are looking for if they are a team that sees him as valuable.
I wouldn't take Zaitsev back as the Canucks due to contract length. Would rather just keep Gudbry.</div></div>
I feel that's the case for both Gudbry and Zaitsev....they provide enough value to their current teams that they aren't worth trading as a pure cap dump...but they aren't valued enough by anyone else around the league to want to take on the cap hit for such little production.
IMO...for either guy to get traded...it's likely as part of a larger trade....something like a Pietrangelo where those guys are cap ballast that St. Louis is willing to take on...but only because it might facilitate a trade that lands them the picks/prospects they covet most.

There is enough space to sign Gardiner, all you need is a depth forward, so you need to find like 500k. Marlies are in Toronto so you don't need to carry a full 23 man roster, 22 will do just fine (hell they can probably get away with less),</div></div>
I think those are conservative extensions for Marner, Kapanen, and Matthews. Not sure Gardiner accepts $4.5M either. There's a lot of worse defensemen making significantly more than $4.5M per season, including one on the right side of his pairing.
