<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>GMBL</b></div><div>My point is that it's not just as simple as saying Matthews and Makar are two players of the same tier, one has 2 years and other has 5, so Toronto needs to add a ton.

I agree, that it makes no sense for Colorado to trade Makar for Matthews who is a luxury (or makes MacKinnon a luxury) especially since they have a high chance of losing Matthews just based off their cap structure (or they would have to gut the team to keep him). On the other end, it would be ridiculous for Toronto to offer more than Matthews for Makar (at most they give a small consolation in case Matthews walks).

Let's look at the risk from each side in a couple of trade scenario's
A 1 for 1 trade:
Colorado: As previously mentioned, the trade would be a gamble to get a luxury (that they likely don't enjoy for long) while opening up a hole in the backend (as far as I know, Colorado doesn't have a RD to replace him).
Toronto: They fill a need with the RD that they need, but open a whole in 1C (perhaps they can replace him internally with Nylander). There's also the risk that Makar might not be the top D-man or even a Norris Caliber D-man beyond 6-8 years, even if he's still a top 10 d-man. The benefit though, is the low cap hit in those 3 years is going to be lower than Matthews, and perhaps Matthews walks in FA. So, maybe it would be a gamble worth the gamble on the Leafs side.

Matthews+Liljegren+1st for Makar:
Colorado: They get a potential top 4RHD and a pick as a bonus, the Matthews' issue still remains though, and will remain until the Leafs are giving Makar's value+Matthews for Makar. So, the closer the Leafs offer gets to that, the risk for Colorado starts to decrease until it's a no-brainer.
Toronto: Now they are giving up another roster player, so they will still need another RHD, and even if they got a 1RD now, they lost a 1C. The 2023 1st is just extra salt on the wound. Adding more is just ridiculous for the Leafs.

Conclusion:
A trade involving Matthews and Makar is most likely a losing trade for both sides in the long-term unless there's something to mitigate risk for one side, which probably means the other is getting absolutely fleeced.

If either guy were to get traded, the move would be to trade them for players of lower calibre+high end prospects and picks so that they have a good chance of ending up with at least 2 elite players for their 1. I could see a way for an "even" trade to occur if a bunch of roster players are thrown in but then there's going to be no motivation for one side to even pull off the trade.</div></div>

I gotchu. Yeah, sorry I misunderstood your point, lol
