Expectations for 2021-2022
<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>Joey</b></div><div>Completely agree with everything. Hyman will also probably get more than that. I won't say everything that I would do but you can look at my last few teams I made if you want to know.</div></div>
People seem really high on Ullmark, but there's no guarantee he's going to be a starter calibre elsewhere (SV% can be inflated behind bad teams that give up shots, or it can be deflated by HD Chances, we don't know what Ullmark will be behind a real team) and teams aren't frivolous with money right now thanks to the flat cap. I think 3.5M is the max a team would bet on him, which Toronto could go to as well.
Hyman could get 5M+, but if he's going to remain a Leaf, I think 4.5M is the most you can go. He chose to be a Leaf after college (he wasn't going to sign with Florida), so I think if any Leaf ever were to take slightly less to stay, it'd be him.
Malgin just had an unreal year in switzerland, very comparable to that of Pius Suter who was fantastic for Chicago. I think he plays opening night because the Leafs want to see if he can be a 40ish point middle-six option. Engvall is a top 12 starter, as evidenced in the playoffs. Hockey IQ isn't the highest on Engvall, but his size, speed, and shot, along with defensive acumen will keep him in the league for a long time in bottom 6 roles. Lastly, Brooks is a player. I've been on this boat for a while, but he's had A LOT of injuries the last few years. If he could stay healthy, I have no doubt he'll stick on the Leafs, and likely would have stuck on the Leafs a while ago if he had health. Keefe also trusts him and has always believed in Brooks, so to think he won't make it frankly seems unlikely.

<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>buffbry</b></div><div>Wings pass, we don't need or want kerfoot or his salary. You can pay us to take him, or keep the player and the contract. Other options are to trade him to a contending team where he has more value</div></div>
It had nothing to do with 3rd rounder. He has value in being a C/W, being able to play PK and PP, and assuming Detroit doesn't want to be embarrassing they'll get servicable players under contract while continuing to tank. Kerfoot is young enough that its fine, and honestly he could be shipped off for a 6th and considering the cap Leafs fans would be okay with it if we use the cap well in his absence. He's a fine player, just too much cap for the Leafs needs right now. I just figure Detroit would like a serviceable player who could go wherever in the lineup. He could go to any team frankly.

IMO a good comparison is Demko contract, 5 years 5mil AAV</div></div>
I don't think Ullmark is gonna get close to that. He's done well over small samples. He needs a year or two and this would be a 1A/1B situation not a starter backup. Hot goalie gets starts.

Who pens shouldve got for Kessel

Clicked enter early, but the whole post was supposed to say "As someone who's been on the Garland band wagon since he was passed over in his draft year, I'm very happy with his play. He should've gone that year, but undersized (He was listed at 5'8 although he is now 5'10) and not an elite skater, he got passed over. Next year he dominated the Q, and went 5th round despite his comparables for such a large growth being players like Mark Stone. Even at the time of the Kessel trade, rookie Garland had 13G 5A 18P in 43 GP, but did it in very limited minutes, and had shown his ability to get to the netfront despite his size in the NHL, and was above a point per game in the AHL as a U23 player (very good indicator). People always just sleep on the smaller players who lack elite separation speed until they prove it as dominant NHL players. One i'm hoping for to prove people like this now is Robertson, who should've gone around 20th in his draft and fell to 53rd because of size mixed with speed concerns."

Healthy Nick Robertson
<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>Brad21</b></div><div>Robertson on the top line? Sandin on the third pairing and not on the taxi squad? Those are horrible lines! And if you're going to put Robertson in the linup, put him with Spezza and Thornton! He can learn something from those guys.</div></div>
<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>PleaseBanMeForMyOwnGood</b></div><div>I think you placed Robertson on the wrong line, it would be hard for Tavares to coach Robertson after shifts when they are on different lines.</div></div>
Yeah, wrong click. Robertson should be on the Tavares line, Thornton should be with Matthews. The trick here is deployment. Matthews right now is still facing 1st/2nd lines, while Kerfoot's line is taking on those d-zone draws and secondary matchups. This means that Robertson will get generous zone deployment against lesser opponents (right now Tavares is starting over 70% of his shifts in the o-zone instead of around 50% like the prior two years), and it will be against 3rd lines and 2nd/3rd d-pairs. To get his confidence up, playing him with Tavares/Nylander against non-elite competition should help him adjust. Tavares and Co. can cover for his rookie mistakes against lesser opponents, and his shot and skill mixed with his work ethic should complement that line well on the forecheck.
For Sandin 3rd pair vs Taxi Squad, that's just a personal choice. I think Sandin is NHL ready, and frankly, I'd love to see Liljegren get more than 10 minutes of TOI this season in a few games, but definitely seems like Keefe is riding his top 4 as a top 4, and the remaining dmen are getting minimal 5on5 ice time. Also, with Lehtonen not in the line-up,I'd much rather Sandin be QB on PP2 with Tavares and Nylander over Brodie.

If you aren't scared of Sandin/Liljegren, you never watched them in the AHL. Even Brian Burke has compared the way Sandin plays to Kronwall for how he hits depsite his size. And Liljegren has developed a great defensive game. You don't need to be scared of them per se, but they are likely better than many other 3rd pairs, and if they get hit a couple times but help get us a goal and the other team doesn't, well then we're bruised but we win. Also, we still have Muzzin, Thornton, Anderson and Hyman for guys who can annoy the opposition, as well as Bogosian and Simmonds in the press box if keefe wants to give the team a more physical look for a game.

Sandin's NHL ready, and I've always been impressed with Liljegren's two way play. If they are both ready, then there you go. Frankly, I like this offense. Anderson on L3 is the only one who i think at this moment couldnt handle the responsibility.

<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>Barilko14</b></div><div>Yeah, I agree. There's no way he was guaranteed a spot, so missing camp would more or less count him out of making the team out of camp.
TSN reported the following lines today:
Thornton - AM34 - Marner
Vesey - JT - Nylander
Soup - Kerfoot - Hyman
So, imo Spezza and Simmonds have inside track on 2 of 3 spots, leaving a camp battle between Robertson and Barabanov, which should be best player wins.
Then Boyd is around to spell Spezza, Simmonds, etc.</div></div>
I think Robertson would be more likely to take the 3rd line role than 4th, and considering who's on the 3rd line vs who's in the top 6, if Vesey stumbles out of the gate, I fully expect Robertson to move into 3rd line and Hyman to move up to L3, or if that 3rd line clicks, robertson swaps straight for Vesey to Tavares line. Robertson-Tavares-Nylander looks damn fun to me.

Final Roster
<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>Barilko14</b></div><div>Well the protocols to play WJC are pretty well the same as the protocols to get ready to play in the NHL, right?? You can spin it any way you want really.
Again, if he's hell bent on making the Leafs and WJC hurts his chances, it makes sense that he wasn't completely on board with leaving.</div></div>
Robertson will more than likely get the 9 game audition, but I don't know if the Leafs will want to burn an ELC year when they actually have a lot of forward depth for once. If he doesnt properly earn the spot on the team, he doesnt get it. And with regards to WJC, if he went, he would come back the night of the 5th, and have to quarantine for a week. He would get out the 12, and effectively miss the entire camp. He said he wanted to make the Leafs, and the fact is going to the WJC, he had no real chance to show he deserved that spot over the others here. This was likely a mutual choice. If Barabanov, Vesey, & Simmonds all outplay him, then he's taxi squad.
Even then, I do not in anyway think the Leafs will magically not get injured in a condensed season facing only canadian teams. He'll get in at first injury or on back to backs to give the Vets a rest likely even if he's not in the initial 12.

I mean, he's been with the team since 2015, through two Head Coaches and two GMs now. I think Marincin will likely be on taxi squad actually so that Liljegren can be the 1D playing 30 min a night in the AHL, but until the AHL camps open, I wouldnt be stunned if they keep Liljegren on taxi squad so that he can practice with the NHL guys more and Marincin is waived for the time being.

It seems that I am mistaken. My understanding from original articles was taxi squad would not require waivers, but yes, as it appears they will. Either way, tampa ended up having to give up a 2nd round pick to get rid of Pacquette and Coburn's contract, while also taking back nearly 7.5M in LTIR (which was irrelevant to them this season anyways).
That’s my understanding after reading several articles. If you’ve got something that clarifies different please feel free to share. Cap friendly also has a tweet with a little explainer.

This wasn't expansion draft rules. It was any player that's not on an ELC, put into a position they are listed as per capfriendly, and max of 1 player per team.
However, if expansion draft eligibility were required, I would change Sorokin with Korpisalo. I would still be 100K under the cap in that scenario.

I expect he'll re-sign around 800K-900K. Just based on the roster I have here, I had him starting the season in the AHL, so didn't bother signing him just to show the NHL roster. I thought he'd battle for a 4th line spot, but after the Jumbo signing, I think it's more likely he starts in the AHL.

Clearly if you think that, you've never seen my Jack Johnson-esque ability to destroy a pairing, and that's in beer league. I think Holl would be a good 5D, he's big enough and competent enough to be at least a 5D. 4D is when the competition improves, he got lots of d-zone starts, and it was clear that with Muzzin he could handle it. When it was him and Dermott and he needed to carry more of the responsibility, they couldn't be a shutdown duo. 4/5D is i think accurate, but it would be nice if he wasn't making 2M a year.

He's a 4/5 guy, who should be on a bottom pair, but is a very solid as just a steady, complimentary piece with a better partner. His results next to Muzzin were solid all season, but with Muzzin hurt, the results expectedly dipped and he looked overmatched in a shutdown role without him. I think we've seen that they work together, and I don't see a need to change it unless somebody forces Keefe's hand, but I have no qualms with him in that role as long as healthy Muzzin is next to him.
