Trades, high draft picks and another 10 years of contending
<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>DirtyDangles</b></div><div>No it’s not.
Why wouldn’t Melnyk put the money up and move Hoffman for assets instead and keep the 4th? Ryan is still a useful player, overpaid yes but useful. Plus they could likely get another mid round first and more for Hoffman. So they get Karlsson, their 4th, something between 15-20 and a sweetener instead of 27 and Hossa.</div></div>
Fine, trade Hoffman...... You're going to get lowball offers tho...... Everyone knows Melnyk's position an they will use that against him...
One thing is certain tho, you're not going to be able to trade Ryan without adding a significant asset...
My trade would basically be:
Ryan, Tkachuk for 27th overall & Hossa (6.5 million dollars)
Not much different really from Bryan Bickell & Teuvo Teravainen for a 2nd & 3rd round pick...

(CHI / WSH) - 3rd round pick for Kempný
Kempny didn't do anything special with the Hawks.......... Hey, some players click in different situations...
I'm not angry at all - the guy didn't work here...... I know some Hawks fans are mad, but why?? he didn't work in Q's system - he wasn't a fit here..
The real question is how much is Washington going to pay him this summer given his performance? 4x4 16 million dollar deal? lol

<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>DirtyDangles</b></div><div>Nobody is trading a top 5 pick to get rid of a contract.</div></div>
You're trading #4 for #27 in order to save 6.5 million dollars...
Melnyk would......
You still get a first round pick in a deep draft.....
But like I said - Karlsson is going to walk if Ryan is on the books because Melnyk will not pay Ryan 7.5 and Karlsson 10 and there is no team in the league that will take 7.5 in salary in exchange for 1 million dollars in salary without a first round pick coming back - that 4th overall pick...... Beseides, Ottawa doesn't even have a first round pick next season....
So hypothetically it's trade the 4th or lose Karlsson..

<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>DirtyDangles</b></div><div>How is this clearing space for them?
OTT costs:
Ryan $1.25
Hossa $1
Murphy $3.85
Total $6.1 compared to Ryan’s current $7.25.
So just over $1 mil is the make or break to keep Karlsson?</div></div>
I just threw those guys into the deal because I figured you would want on ice assets.....
I would do Hossa & 27 for Ryan & 4......
That deal would save you 6.50 at full price..
If Ottawa retains 1.5
Ottawa saves 5 million.

I don't see Ottawa being a cap floor team, they never were before, so I don't know if hossa is at all necessary. there probably isn't a team that needs to get the cap floor. with hossa on ltir really his cap hit is meaningless to the hawks or any team.</div></div>
Whatever then, Hossa & 27 for Ryan & 4.....
This is a financial deal....
The Sens wont keep Ryan and Karlsson (because Melnyk is on a budget)....... And no team is just going to "take" Ryan without sending salary back...... The Blackhawks can, but it would cost swapping pick 27 for pick 4..

Well, then you lose Karlsson.....
No team is going to take Ryan without sending salary back, and if you're stuck with Ryan then Karlsson walks because Melnyk is apparently on budget..
The Hawks can send you 1 million in salary for Ryans 7.5 million in salary....

<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>DirtyDangles</b></div><div>OTT could easily keep Karlsson. They don’t have a cap problem, they have a cheap as fk owner problem.</div></div>
Exactly, which is where Hossa comes in....... They lose the Ryan salary for 1 million bucks - they could put the money they're paying Ryan towards Karlsson... That is the whole point of Hossa being in the deal....
Ottawa loses 7.50 in Ryan
Ottawa takes on 1 million (cash salary) in Hossa
Which leaves 6.50 in extra cash to keep Karlsson around.
Right now he doesn't want to pay Karlsson what he's worth because he's stuck with paying Ryan....... Hawks can help with that if Ottawa is willing to swap pick #4 for pick #27..
It's actually a pretty good deal from a financial perspective.

Melnyk desperately wants to get rid of Ryan......
But like I said, the Hawks may have to add something, perhaps Duclair or Hinostroza??? or the Hawks just take Ryan at full price....
You do know Hossa is basically a "cap coupon" so he won't count against the Sens salary cap...... Melnyk gets 5.275 cap hit for a measly 1 million in salary...... I mean it would help Melnyk keep Karlsson and sign one of his other key free agents....
This trade would give Ottawa a lot of flexibility..

Mock Draft 1st and 2nd round
The only forwards the Hawks would take over any of the defenseman are Tkachuk or Wahlstrom.
I would love Dobson, Boqvist or Bouchard (in that order).....
This is going to be a difficult draft, because the top 10 players in this draft would be top 3 players in a "normal" draft....
The problem with Boqvist is that he even admits he's 2-3 years away from the NHL, while Dobson and Bouchard believe they're NHL ready, and many scouts agree that Dobson is NHL ready so.....
The same goes for Tkachuk and Wahlstrom...... I know Tkachuk wants to go the NCAA route but he said it depends on who drafts him and what role the team that drafts him plans to give him......
So when you consider that, and given the Hawks window - I really think they're going to take a defenseman if Tkachuk and Wahlstrom are off the board and the defenseman they will take will be a defenseman that is NHL ready or close to NHL ready - close like next season..
This is a crazy draft tho...

<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>dbudz12</b></div><div>Okay but why get rid of Anisimovs contract just to pick up a guy at the same price? I would rather have the money for flexibility</div></div>
Because Bozak is exactly the type of player the Hawks need, Anisimov and Bozak are totally different players - Bozak is excellent at the dot and a reliable 2-way player that can score... He would fit into Q's system really really well... He's basically a Marcus Kruger type player that can score 40-50 points a season..... He's the perfect #3 C for this team..
Anisimov is a big skilled player but Schmaltz is the Hawks 2nd line center of the future, besides Victor Ejdsell is basically an Anisimov clone...
Anisimov would be excellent trade bait to land a top 4 defenseman and the Hawks desperately need a top 4 defenseman......... Look AA & 27th overall for Faulk would really solve the Hawks needs on D and signing Bozak would really fill the Hawks needs at #3 center.....
The Hawks would be a much better team doing this.....

U know
None of that will happen because none of it makes any sense..
The Hawks will sign Hayden over Jurco.
Toews, Kane & Keith are not being traded (not now if ever) - at least not for that - nor would they move their NMC's... For those guys to be traded they would have to ASK for a trade or be pending UFA's but they won't be pending UFA's for 6 more years.
The Hawks are not signing James Neal to a 6.2 million 4 year contract.......... The Hawks aren't handing out any long-term contracts at this time..... The Hawks DO indeed need a 2nd line LW, but they need one that will sign a 1 year contract (because Bowman is going to resign Panarin next summer as a UFA) and the perfect candidate for that is Kovalchuk.... 1-year 6 per would be perfect for the Hawks, and I'm sure Kovalchuk would love to play with Kane so the Hawks and Kovalchuk would be a perfect fit...

<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>Jeep71589</b></div><div>Totally agree 100%. They definitely have the ability to get this team back into contenders with the cap space. I like the thought of adding Bozak, vet cheap defensive center, left handed mobile dmen, faulk via trade and maybe a JVR that would be an incredible off season. We will see, a lot goes into each and everyone of the deals they will make. I am looking forward to draft day! Bowman has to make things happen.</div></div>
I like JVR but I see Panarin coming back as a UFA next summer...... So I see Kovalchuk being a more realistic target on a 1-year deal just to hold the Hawks over for this upcoming season... So from that perspective Kovalchuk would make a lot of sense and I think he would do really well playing opposite of Kane...... I mean Kovalchuk is very similar to Panarin and Kovalchuk could be had on a 1-year deal at the same price of JVR, but JVR will want a 6-7 year deal and that would make re-signing Panarin out of the question..
So yea, I really think Kovalchuk (or a top 6 LW) that will sign a 1-year deal Bowman's target(s) come July 1st....
And yes, I don't like Kovalchuk's attitude, but the guy is really really good at hockey and at 35 he would take a 1-year deal....... The Hawks cant afford to commit long-term to anyone BUT Panarin and he will be a UFA next summer and I could see Bowman offering Panarin a 7-year 7.5 - 8 per contract..
That's what I see going on with the Hawks at 2nd line LW over the next couple of seasons...

There is no way the Hawks go after Tavares......... The only possible way I see that happening is if the Hawks trade Toews, and we all know that will NEVER happen..... Tavares would NEVER consider going to a team were he is anything BUT the face of the franchise and their 1st line center....
Tavares is going to Vegas..
Besides, the Hawks can't take on another 10 million dollar contract....... Nick Schmaltz is the Hawks 2nd line center of the future, and he needs to be resigned to boot next summer and he's going to want at least 3.5 on a bridge deal and perhaps 5 per on a long-term 8 year deal.... Then we have DeBrincat after that who will need to be resigned and he will probably want the same as Schmaltz and signing Tavares would put the Hawks back in cap hell....
Of course Bowman would love to have Tavares but Bowman knows signing him is 100% out of the question unless Tavares comes to the Hawks and pulls an "Andre Dawson" and offers to sign for whatever the Hawks can afford and that's not going to happen.....

I really like the idea of bringing in Faulk but Bowman cant overpay for him...
I think Anisimov, Forsberg & 3rd for Faulk & Darling (25% retained) would be a good deal for both clubs...
I would really try to avoid moving any picks in this draft unless it's to move up in the draft....... This draft is just way too deep...... I mean a guy you get at 27 in this draft would be a player you get at 12-15 in a "normal" draft so....... And the Hawks really need to get some top prospects into the system because the farm really lacks top-end talent - and this is a draft where the Hawks can get some serious top-end talent......
I would love to get the Islanders picks (#11 & 12).....

<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>Jeep71589</b></div><div>Would you rather have Riley Nash or Bozak? Nash is cheaper but Bozak is a much better face off man.</div></div>
I would take Bozak all day....... I would also sign Vermette and Dominic Moore as face off specialists that play more of a defensive role when needed or when injuries occur.... I mean they wouldn't play a whole lot a night, but it's always great to have a backup plan - and both can be had for cheap 800k each.. And they would do a good job working with the younger centers like Schmaltz, Hinostroza or Ejdsell etc.... SO there are other factors there for signing those guys..
You see, it's the experienced bottom 6 players that really hurt the Hawks this past season.....
So yea, I could see Bowman go after:
Bozak
Vermette/Dominic Moore
Tommy Wingels
John Moore
Kovalchuk/van Riemsdyk/James Neil/David Perron (maybe)....
Then use Anisimov as trade bait to bring in a top 4..
Hawks have 18-20 million in cap space on hand to make it happen...
We will see.

Yea, the Hawks need serious help at the dot....... Signing Bozak would be a great start, but also signing Vermette and Dominic Moore as FO specialists wouldn't be a bad move either - both would be super cheap (800k each)....
Winning faceoffs is crucial and the Hawks lack of ability to win draws this past season really hurt them because they were always chasing the puck........ This is a perfect example of how the loss of Kruger really hurt the Hawks....... Well, Bozak is a Kruger type player but Bozak can score...... Look you can never have too many centers - especially centers that win 55-60% of draws...

<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>JackBurton</b></div><div>Do you have some sort of insider info that points to this? Just curious as to why you are 90% certain about this... I do buy your theory on a 1 year Kovi setting that up, but you just seem very sure of that...
I agree with you that the following summer will be franchise altering. I think it is somewhat akin to what happened to Pittsburgh when they won their 2009 cup, and then had Crosby and Malkin on massive deals that didn't make any room for a supporting cast. They didn't make it too far until they won again in 2016. I am hoping we see a similar rebound for 19 & 88, and a large and talented enough supporting cast next year to see them back to the big dance... Though we all know Crosby is a whole different animal, and any comparisons to him may be a bit foolish... But raise a glass to hoping.</div></div>
Do I have insider info? maybe..lol
Ultimately it will all come down to Panarin and what he wants to do.....
Look at it this way - why would Bowman trade Panarin for Saad? well, because Saad is signed for 6 years and Panarin is signed for 2 (1 more year now) and is set to become an unrestricted free agent next summer and he will be 27 years old...... Look at the Hawks cap situation now, and look at it next summer..... Now they have 18-20 million in cap space, next summer they will have more if they sign guys to 1-year deals........ Bowman has set himself up to have a big offseason this summer and next - and that was the plan all along - he even said as much last summer when he traded Panarin and Hammer......
TBH, Bowman, Q and Wirtz all knew this past season was going to be a difficult one, but Bowman and company had to get out of "cap hell" and that's exactly what they did..... From a cap perspective they're in a very good position now...
Yes, I'm sure if Panarin doesn't sign an extension with Columbus this season he will be a Chicago Blackhawk for the 2019-20 season..........To be honest don't be shocked if Bowman re-acquired Panarin at the trade deadline if Columbus are sellers and the Hawks are playoff bound (which they will be).....
When this happens Bowman is going to look like a genius, because he basically got Saad & Forsberg for free...

The hassle? there is no hassle......... Hossa's contract does not affect the Hawks cap situation at all...... For all intents and purposes Hossa doesn't count against the cap..
There is no need to trade Hossa, and if a team wants him for the cap benefits then they will have to give up something of value....... What is a 4.275 "cap coupon" worth??? 2nd round pick?
I mean you understand what I'm saying right? that Hossa doesn't count against the salary cap this summer because Bowman can go 10% over the salary cap, just as long has he's cap compliant by the first day of the regular season....
So the Hawks have 18-20 million to spend this summer because Hossa's 5.275 cap hit technically doesn't count....
