Montreal Canadiens signed Sean Monahan (1 Year / $2,000,000 AAV)
Same 6 millions as last year prorated for the 25 games he played. The team can't afford to tie up cap on players who won't be able to show up. The only losing scenario for the team is that he'd play less than 20 games, which isn't excluded considering the severity of the injuries he suffered at the end of the season.

That whole "top 6" argument is crap. Do you think we has less competition for a top 6 spot in LA?!?! Pure non sense.</div></div>
In LA he belongs on the 4th line with the centers they have there. LA is probably going to try to make him look good at the beginning of the season but after a couple of losing streaks, they’ll be looking for more than defense from the 2nd line and he’ll be sent back down to the 3rd line (being the lowest position you can put a 5.5m player in without looking too bad as a GM).

<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>Caniac2000</b></div><div>Montreal lost Weber, Kotkaniemi and Danault. Carolina added Bear, Cole, Kotkaniemi, Andersen, Raanta, DeAngelo, Leivo, Stepan... there's a LOT of improvements on this Canes roster. Hamilton was let go because his deal is going to be an anchor almost as soon as the puck drops this season. Carolina have MAJORLY improved almost everywhere. Montreal still are weak down the middle.</div></div>
None of the players that carolina took on are difference makers. Hamilton's production accounts for almost all of these guys production added up. Andersen couldn't keep up a .900 average with a defense that is of similar quality as carolina's and raanta's 905 is also under Reimer's 906 so wouldn't call those upgrades. I would also question the judgement of someone that brings a guy like DeAngelo in a locker room full of kids. I would've passed on that, no matter how low the price tag was. Montreal's center line is going to be better than last year's, Danault is going to stop taking Evan's ice time (who is faster and more skilled). Weber is not lost, he's on the LTIR where is highest value is for the cap space he provides. Most discussions about him last year were about how slow he was and how he should be pushed to retire. What we have now is better than a retired weber, he's a cap boosting weber. In the end we'll only see what the result is once the season start but my feeling is that the right pieces are now in the right slots and the underachieving centers issue we had have been handled. As to the "who would want to sign in montreal" point you are trying to make, I'd just say Carolina doesn't have anything very bright to show in that sector either, nothing matching montreal's recent UFA signings anyways (toffoli, chiarot, savard, hoffman).

cap wise that wouldn't have worked out to have all 3 but even if it did, Danault really belongs on a 3rd or 4th line. He's been free loading off the 2nd line wingers production for his stats in the last few years. I'm happy he was able to get the contract he did but he stood at 148th position in goals for centers last year. That puts him on the 5th line on most teams. 235th in centers for takeaways by 60 minutes which you might expect was one of his strong points for a defensive center. Nothing normal about paying 5,5m for someone that belongs on the 3rd/4th line on an average team.

He said publicly he turned down a bigger cap hit because he didn't think it would be matched. Aho used to end his debate. Right now, Montreal will be in the fight for Shane Wright. Why would anyone want to sign there? Also, why didn't Kotkaniemi get locked up then? He was a 3rd overall pick and still has fantastic upside. But he continued on. Players don't like Canada tax you see. It's why Canadian RFA's are always among the last to sign (Marner, Nylander, Hughes, Tkachuk, Pettersen)</div></div>
The difference in net salary between Carolina and mtl for a 6m base contract is 500k, so I doubt that would have ampered any negociations efforts as Canadian gms expect to be asked for that additional 500k. Carolina let go a top talent at defense who had twice as many goals and points as kotkaniemi last season while moving that money to overpaid offense. In the meantime MTL added Hoffman, Dvorak and Savard while making the Stanley cup finals so I think a team that improved over the team that beat the golden knights and the leafs should be able to convince players the conditions are in place to push further or at least repeat, not sure what makes you say mtl is looking at last position

Weber is going on ltir for the next 5 years, Habs are going to have 8 millions more cap space than the canes for this fight. The only reason haha wouldn’t match is because the players isn’t worth half the price canes are paying. Letting Hamilton go when you have a weak defense to replace him with a center when you have no issues at center certainly isn’t progress. If you think Suzuki and caufield are going to make it to rfa status you are sadly mistaken, on the other hand, the canes are known for trying to low ball they rfas which is why the aho offer happened in the first place. So we know the canes prospects are going to hit rfa status regularly.

Overall skills wise, I would probably have Marner on top but at some point you need to score too and marner just doesn’t deliver when it counts. 0 goals in the playoffs is not enough for the cap space he takes. Caufield never disappoints on high quality chances.

Suzuki OS
Suzuki’s situation is very different from KK’s. He will not hit rfa status because when he asks for 7 millions, he will get it (seeing as he’s actually worth it). Also, KK will be rfa next year so you have to increase his current salary by 5% for the qualifying offer or release him and then compete with the whole league to sign him again. If you were KK, would you take a salary cut next year or check what the league has to offer and choose the city you want to live in?

How would you rate Kotkaniemi's skating? Not more than a 6/10 if you ask me. Maybe he can skate fast but doesn't want to but his backcheck is not convincing at all. I watched every AHL game in laval this year and Poehling has progressed substancially since he was last seen in the NHL. I don't see how they could cut him this year.

Kotkaniemi was given all the opportunities to play with every single player on the team. Suzuki delivered twice as much as Kotkaniemi in these same conditions, starting on the 4th line and working his way up. So does that make Suzuki an insanely good superstar or is Kotkaniemi just average? Suzuki is good but he's no Mc David so comparing apples with apples, Kotkaniemi is producing half as much as suzuki. Players that can dominate will always find a way to do it no matter what the conditions are. Another example, Corey Perry scored more points at 36 years old from the 4th line in less games than Kotkaniemi who was tried time and time again with the best we had. At 6 Millions I expect someone that can dominate. If you need to be handed wingers that already dominate on their own to produce, anyone can do your job. You want people to make sense, start by making some sense yourself, you blame the coach but we had 2 different coaches during KK's stay in MTL. How many coaches do you need to fire before the we start looking at the player for a reason for the poor production. Another example? Danault who's a defensive center also had more points than KK with 1 tenth of KK's powerplay time. Believe what you want but in the end, numbers speak for themselves, so replace the 10th scorer on your team (KK) with anyone else and no one is going to have any sorts of expectations for that replacement, so why not try Poehling who has the same point per game pace that KK had in the AHL but 5.35 millions cheaper. Anyways, you keep KK and you're screwed, 5% increase in salary next year (to a total of 6.4 millions), at that rate, what is Suzuki going to be expecting? 12 millions? We won't even have the cap space to even pay market value for Suzuki if we start paying 60 points money to a 30 points player. You have to know when to cut your losses.

Caufield and Suzuki are 20 and 22, they are showing how well they understand the game every game, vision isn't about age, you have it or you don't. Galchenyuk was a 3 overall pick as well, Galchenyuk and Kotkaniemi have skills which can often be misleading because it makes you forget about player's vision.

Even during the season he was given a ton of opportunities against crappy teams and didn't show much while everyone else was racking up points. Just to keep his rights next year, the canes will be forced to extend a 6.405 millions qualifying offer. So as paying a 30 points guy this amount of money is completely insane, they will most likely release him and let him check the market, so basically they are paying a first pick and a 3rd pick for a rental player.

<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>Hockyluv21</b></div><div>They're not "low-balling" anybody, especially their young core guys. In the end, Svech and the Canes were able to agree to the full eight. I'm sure they'll do the same with Necas and maybe Kotkaniemi next offseason. If you ever listen to the Canes FO and how they do business, they don't view things in terms of a low-vs.-high ball. They have a ballpark about what your value is. If you think that your value is higher, then they'll let you find it on the open market. Dougie, for example, was able to get a super-high offer from NJ, and the Canes decided not to match it. A player like Martinook, however, tested the market and found the Canes offer comparable to other teams. It just depends.</div></div>
I'm having trouble agreeing when I see extremely talented players like Teravainen who was coming off 64 and 76 points seasons only presented a 5.4M contract. In most team 2 straight years with that type of production is enough to claim the 100k / point market value.

Why pay market value for 30 points guys when you can 6+ millions offer sheet healthy scratches... Canes are going to have a hard time low balling Necas after that. Habs would have thought twice at 4.5 millions but at 6.1 for 1 year (6.4 next year), they are not touching that offer sheet.

Probably the canes management and their fans were too busy getting scared of losing Hamilton to watch the playoffs or they would have noticed he was a healthy scratch. 6 millions for a healthy scratch sure is good work lol. If only it was a multi year deal but a 1 year deal means they'll have to pay 6.5M to keep his rights next year. He'll never be worth that much so that means they just gave up a 1st and 3rd rounder for a rental player.

To be precise, the equivalent of 9m in montreal is 8.2m in boston tax wise. But I agree that Krug would probably forget the 700k difference to stay with a contender if boston were to offer him 7.5 . Boston is doing very well at getting RFAs to buy the team's concept of taking salary cuts to keep a strong and stable core.
